I have been to Masaya Volcano during the day and at night. Both experiences are nice but the night visit is better as you can see the lava glowing. Don’t over pay an expensive tour, you can just pay the entrance to the park and see the volcano for yourself (as long as you have a car). On the way down, stop at the visitor center and they will give you a history of the area.

Masaya Volcano National Park in Nicaraugua offers visitors a look at an active volcano. A daytime visit allows a 15 min look at the crater filled with smoke. Molten ava could not be seen on this daytime visit.You could feel heat from the smoke at the observation points. The volcano is surrounded by fields full of hardened lava from prior eruptions.

Even though you have to be a long way away for safety reasons and you can only see this tiny part it IS worth going. It's a very experiential place so photos and videos won't do the trick.
Maybe one day they will invent heat resistant drones that can carry peope allow them to get closer to the lava.

This place is simply stunning and being able to witness the bubbling lava below is a truly unique experience which you'll rarely find the opportunity to do again elsewhere in the world. I would recommend this tour to anyone as it is completely unique and you may kick yourself if you don't.

If you’re planning on travelling through Nicaragua, and have never seen a volcano up close, try to make it to Masaya... you can only observe the inside of the crater for ten minutes, but you may never be able to see something like this again

Breathtaking view of the boiling crater from a lookout site. Cannot convey the thrill of looking into a live volcano. The tour was amazing.

We had already been on the top of other volcanos, so when we decided to go to Masaya volcano, it was only for one purpose - to see lava during the night. The time was about 17:30 when we arrived in our private car in front of Masaya Volcano National Park. First we waited an hour, maybe an hour and half in the car queue, both before and after paying for the tickets, then we were permitted to drive to the parking place at the top of the volcano. And then ... we did not see anything else then a lot of steam in the crater! Not the slightest view of lava! After 10-15 min. we had to drive down with a big dissapointment and a feeling that we paid for nothing. Fortunately there were some local tourists who obviously were as disappointed as we were. They blocked the way out with their car and started an argument with the people who sold the tickets. They wanted their money back! Believe it or not - they succeeded. Then all the other tourists including us demanded their money back and the money was paid back to everybody who claimed it. We tried the next day again. But this time we were wiser. When we came to the point where they sell tickets we asked one of the employees how the view was this evening. He told us that the weather conditions were not good and that we would not see lava, so we turned back without paying for the tickets and drove home. Unfortunately we had no possibility to try again another evening. Later on we talked to a tour organiser and he confirmed that the possibility of seeing lava depends very much on the weather conditions like wind and rain.
At Masaya Volcano National Park there are employees both down where they sell tickets and at the top, where they can see how the view is on the specific day/evening. These guys communicate with each other, so all employees must be aware of if you can see lava or not.
In my opinion it is not totally fair to sell the tickets (evening tickets are much more expensive then day tickets) without warning people that weather conditions are bad and that this evening you will not see much of the lava.
MY BEST ADVICE IS: if you want to see lava, ask the guys who are selling the tickets if the weather permits to see it or not. If not, you can leave the car queue without paying.

do the night visit the US$ 10 they charge are really worth it.
