About
Travel south along the coast to the picturesque heritage town of Dalkey, 25 minutes from Dublin City. Some artefacts date inhabitation of Dalkey Island to 4,500 B.C. At historic Dalkey Castle (1390), Costumed Living History Actors bring the ancient history to colourful life with archery, barber surgery and a cook giving a masterclass on circular economy (nothing was wasted) in medieval times, as part of every guided tour. Tour also includes exploration of the atmospheric 10th Century St Begnet's church & graveyard connected with the site. The heritage centre is also included with interactive screens in different languages & scale models. A Writers’ Gallery features the work of 45 locally connected creative artists from James Joyce to Bono and Samuel Beckett to Maeve Binchy. Climb to the battlements for magnificent views of the surrounding stunning landscape view of the sea and mountains. If you are with a larger group, perhaps add on a guided walk. Dalkey Castle should be on your list of places to visit!
We had such a wonderful experience here. I was amazed by the quality and creativity of the tour at Dalkey Castle and Heritage Centre. They have an excellent tour showing the history of Dalkey and the castle. The actors really help bring to life the castle and history in a way you won’t see anywhere else. You’ll find you are learning a lot about the time period, castle and area through delightful and entertaining dialog. The actors were brilliant and hilarious, and they brought the history of Dalkey to life in a very entertaining way. The castle itself was beautiful and well-preserved, and the staff was very so helpful and accommodating. It was a great value for money and a memorable experience. Definitely recommend checking out Dalkey as well for a nice day trip from Dublin for its charming streets and shops.
We do try to pack as much as we can into the experience, so we are overjoyed to hear such a glowing review. Glad to hear that the history was brought to life in such an entertaining way. Thank you for visiting.

    Definitely worth a visit
We have lived in the area for a few years now but didn't have a strong reason to go to the Dalkey Castle until a friend recommended it for Christmas. When booked tickets we saw they had a Halloween Experience that looks fun. AND wow, we took our 6 yr old and a friend and were so impressed with what they did. It was a great mix of culture, history and fun for all of us. It's definitely worth a visit.
What a wonderful review, Kelsey, thank you. Especially pleased the children enjoyed the Halloween experience. Thank you to your friend for recommending us! Look forward to seeing you all at Christmas!!

I brought a group of students to visit the castle. I was very impressed by the friendly professional staff. They love what they do and took the time to explain the different areas of the castle and the activities to the students. Well worth the visit.
Thrilled to hear it. We are passionate about making sure group bookings get a great experience so it is nice to hear we are achieving this. Thank you!

Fantastic experience! Well worth it, easy train ride from Dublin. History and humor. Great tour guide at the castle, wonderful medieval actors in character describing life in the castle.
A wonderful review. Many thanks Steven! Glad you hopped on the DART to come and see us, and, that you felt it was well worth it.

    Take this marvelous tour!
This was the most delightful tour we have been on in years! What fun to get to interact with “real” people who lived in the castle 100s of years ago! We learned so much from their engaging, humorous presentations of how they survived such difficult times. They never broke character when answering our questions and often left us laughing. The tour guide (Sharon) was very knowledgeable and took her time with us. We highly recommend this tour!
How kind of you to say! So pleased that you all thoroughly enjoyed your visit. Your recommendation means a lot to us. Thank you for taking the time to review.

    An unique experience.
What a pleasant experience! A special mention to our guide Mr Fran and his amazing knowledge, patience and care with our group. The actors also made an unique experience. I've been visited many castles all over Europe and has never seen actors playing as the castle staff and sharing their daily duties. I highly recommend it. Thanks to all staff again. Debora Vendramini and family.
What a fantastic compliment Debora, thank you! Wonderful to hear we rate alongside the castles in mainland Europe. We aim to make it a unique, interesting & entertaining experience so we are pleased to hear we are succeeding. We will pass on your compliment to Fran. Thank you for taking the time to review, we really appreciate it.

    History on your doorstep!
Wonderful history lesson (on my doorstep!) from a really great tour guide. The group visited various parts of the castle, from storerooms to battlements (fantastic views) and were well informed and entertained by the castle’s barber, archer and cook! The interactive heritage centre warrants a visit - there’s just so much to read about!
It is our mission to bring Dalkey's long history & heritage to everyone but we are always particularly pleased when someone local discovers the history brought to life for them through the tour. Wonderful to hear you got a good chance to explore our interactive screens, enjoy the views, interact with the characters and discover the history. Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to review. We appreciate it.

    Well worth a visit
Excellent visit. The actors in the Living history tour were superb and very entertaining. The view from the battlements was fantastic and the overall experience was worth every penny. Even my son got to mint a coin that he could keep! The gift shop was also reasonably priced compared to other sites we have visited. Highly recommended and very informative.
Thank you so much for your kind and considered review. We really appreciate it and are thrilled you all enjoyed your experience.

Visited this beautiful place in May 2019, and had fab time there. Talented actors are making great show around while explaining life and culture of old Dalkey castle. Tour lasts for some 45 mins, and it's great for family visits, couples and for solo visits too. Near castle you'll find cheap parking and a plenty of nice restaurants and beer gardens. Wonderful!

Had a guided tour of Dalkey Castle and heritage centre yesterday. It was an excellent tour led by a lovely lady called JD. We got a very warm welcome on arrival by the two ladies on reception. The tour was enhanced by the addition of actors who gave you a flavour of what times were like in olden days in the castle. Well worth a visit. The castle is a two minute walk from the dart station. The tour takes an hour and can be booked online beforehand. This tour would be enjoyed by all the family.

I visited Dalkey castle with my sister on Thursday the 7th September and I have to say it was definitely one I can highly recommend !! The guided tour never let your mind wonder away as the actors & the tour guide kept giving you a great insight into the past. The past surely came alive!!! I will not tell you all the interesting info I learned as I don't want to spoil it for you, so if you have any chance to visit it you will come out smiling 😁.

We decided to take the Dart train out of Dublin to see the coastal area south of the city. Dalkey is a charming seaside town that offers the Heritage Museum, shops and restaurants. We took the tour of the museum, we were the only two so it was a private tour. The tour is set up where local people act our their roles as barber/docter, archer and cook in explaining life in the castle back in the 1700's. It was a lot of fun and the museum has a lot to offer. Would highly recommend taking the Dart train a short ride (30 minutes) down the coast to visit the town of Dalkey. One of the highlights of our visit to Dublin area.

We had a lovely trip to Dalkey Castle yesterday, with our three boys aged 9,6 and 3. I've often walked past but was never in before. It's definitely worth visiting!

Minota, our tour guide, was lovely - very knowledgeable about the castle and its history, and very engaging in her delivery. We especially enjoyed her coin minting demonstration!

The live actor tour was such fun, and horrible histories fans would love it! It really brought the castle to life.

We had good weather and the views from the top of the castle views from top were spectacular....and from there you could actually see how communication with the signalling tower on Killiney would work...

Unfortunately due to covid we couldnt view the models and information in the visitor centre.... But we will be back!! Thanks to all involved!

We visited on impulse as we were walking through Dalkey. The price of €15 for adults seemed a bit steep for such a small castle but it was well worth it. We initially were shown a DVD giving an overview of the history and structure of the castle. During the tour three entertaining and witty actors interacted with us giving information on medieval healthcare (barber/surgeon) castle defence (archer) and diet for master and servants (cook). The tour also included a guided visit to the charming graveyard. Afterwards we were free to look at the information in the heritage centre which was well presented and there were models of the layout of Dalkey through the ages. I am from Dublin and went with my American husband and his brother and we would all highly recommend it.

Wonderful. I went in, thinking it was just a small walk thru museum with a few diagrams you read. It ended up being a guided tour with re-enactors showing what life was like at the time Dalkey Castle was built. I reserved a less popular tour time, which led me to being the only person on the tour. They still did the full presentations like they would for a whole group.
I don't know how much tickets normally are, as I went in 2021 when a lot of prices for heritage sites in the country are free. I was allowed to take pictures the entire time, and some of the best images from my entire trip were from the top of the castle.
Even though I went alone, as an adult in my 20's, this would easily be a great family friendly even to take kids to while in town.

We appreciate you taking the time to review your experience at Dalkey Castle. It is good to know that you really enjoyed the visit as a solo traveller. The Cook, the Archer and the Barber Surgeon are happy to welcome one visitor or lots at a time and tell them the stories of their life in Dalkey Castle's past.

Our tour guides were brilliant and engaging. Their Dalkey story related local contexts with historical details in a hugely interesting narrative. The following day, I continued to muse over how archery was developed, why yew trees are in most graveyards and how your health can improve with a little bloodletting. The acting, and setting were first class. Terrific entertainment !

Myself and my friend had a brilliant time visiting dalkey castle. Our tour group was small, and we were first shown an informational video about the history of the castle. Then our tour guide brought us round the castle, where we heard from some actors in period costumes about their lives, some info from our guide, and some fun activities along the way! There were 2 kids in our tour group who also seemed to have a great time and the actors were brilliant with them.

Really great fun with a lot of medieval and local history, great for kids and adults. Would highly recommend!

This tour should not be missed! The Heritage Center at Dalkey Castle has been really well done and is informative and educational. The tour included a DVD presentation, a guide presentation, and then “daily life” presentations by three actors who did a wonderful job educating the group while doing it with lots of charm and humor. It’s amazing how much has been done at this castle to provide a wonderful story of its history and what life was like in the 1500s at the castle.
