It's not far from the train station. Hired a car to transport me on narrow lanes. Time was tight and this was suggested as the # 1 best thing to do. It was! Very interesting ruins, arches, views and peaceful countryside.

No matter when you go to visit the rock it will amaze you and take your breath away. This place is a photographers dream. The scenery, the stunning views, the colours you get on a cloudless days and quite stunning. It can give you that eerie feeling as watch the crown enmass fly around parts of the castle ruins. You... Situated midway between Portlaoise and Stradbally and just literally a few minutes from the M7Motorway. It's visible from the road and accessible by a winding steep road, which does give the feeling of going somewhere mysterious to the kids. The Rock has a beautiful old Country Church at its Base. Historic information is laid out on an information board at... More

Great views and was a lovely place visit . Even on a cold December day the view was great and walking up the hill keeps you warm.

this is how the rock of Cashel was many years ago, when you could explore and get a real feel of how this castle was 100s of years ago. the kids had a great time exploring, and there were fantastic views of the countryside. we had a great fun, don't miss it

Fascinating, well preserved hilltop fort with spectacular views of the surrounding plain. Mind you, we visited on a beautiful sunny day, and mild (despite 'end October'!). Seems inhabited by a flock of crows which adds to the atmosphere. Interesting parish church at its base. Well worth a short detour if one is staying Portlaoise town, just a few minutes' drive...
