About
The Castle is closed until March 2025. To reach the Castle and begin your adventure, walk along the causeway or take the amphibious Castle Ferry. Spend your day exploring this sprawling 15-acre fortress: climb the battlements dating back to the time Sir Walter Raleigh was Governor of Jersey; explore the grounds that gave refuge to King Charles II during the English Civil War; uncover the story of the Castle during the German Occupation in World War II; then discover the oldest part of this site, The Hermitage, where Saint Helier is thought to have lived around 550 A.D. Step back in time to 1781 and meet the Castle Gunner who will tell you his story of the Battle of Jersey or meet His Majesty, King Charles II for a very special tour of the Castle.

- smiler1956Birmingham, United Kingdom610 contributionsVisitStarted by booking our visit at the Castle Ferry ticket office. Due to strong winds we had to wait until the tide had gone out, as the Amphibious bus could only drive. We were sent away and not able to pre-book a ticket. Upon our return later in the day, we obtained our tickets, which included entrance to the castle. After a short ride we arrived at the castle to an intro from a staff member, and then set off for our tour. Really interesting castle with plenty to see and some lovely views. A great mixture of old and new constructions ranging across the years including the german additions during the occupation of the Islands in the second world war. An aptly dressed staff member provided a great presentation of the castles history and demonstrated how to fire a flintlock rifle, and then after some drill teaching, marched the hundred or so visitors to a canon, which again he demonstrated how to fire. A brilliant afternoon!Thank you for your review of your recent visit to Elizabeth Castle. Due to the offshore position of the castle we do have to adhere to strict safety rules regarding the use of our amphibious vehicles, but we are glad that you were able visit once the tide had gone out sufficiently and had a brilliant afternoon.Written 21 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 October 2023
- Valerie W2 contributionsa Great castle to Visitvisit to Elizabeth Castle is well worth the money , Not only a great place of History ,but you will be entertained as well ,with a firing of a cannon and informed all about the musket and how loud the battle fields were at that time and the hell the men went though . The two actors and make no mistake they are good actors ,have a vast knowledge of their subject and make the whole thing great fun and you learn a lot ,do advise to do as they say in regard to covering your ears ,when they fire the cannon and the muskets . The trip in the water bus is also worth it and funVisited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 7 October 2023
- WARREN F24 contributionsYou’ll have a blast at Elizabeth CastleWe had a fantastic time here. Little did we know that the midday cannon demonstration would see us becoming part of history and playing roles in actually firing the cannon. Sergeant gunner Gilly was exceptionally engaging, funny and knowledgable. I would recommend this to adults and children alike. We could have spent the whole day there.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 October 2023
- KazzyKentSevenoaks District, United Kingdom11 contributionsExcellent!Very interesting visit to Elizabeth Castle today; from the amphibious vehicle experience to the fascinating and entertaining one hour tour/talk which was most excellently delivery by 'King Charles II'! We loved it! A wonderful place steeped in history. Highly recommended.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- lkh0720 contributionsGreat interactive Midday Parade, poor bookingWe enjoyed the trip over in the amphibious vehicle, especially the safety video! Fabulous interactive demo of musket firing and cannon firing at the Midday Parade; made the visit much better than expected for our 8yo. Lots to explore, great view from the top. It was a shame we couldn’t book online and secure a particular timed crossing. We had to wait 40 mins because a group had “phoned ahead”; even though they hadn’t paid anything so had to barge to the front of the long queue 🤷♀️Thank you for your feedback with regards to your visit to Elizabeth Castle. We are very sorry that you had to wait this length of time to board our amphibious castle ferry. We are currently reviewing booking procedure's with regards to larger groups using the ferry's, in order to resolve this. We thank you for your patience and we are glad that you enjoyed your overall experience of the ferry ride and the castle.Written 8 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 October 2023
- Lorraine V10 contributionsA lovely day spent at Elizabeth Castle!A lovely day spent at Elizabeth Castle. We spent 4-5 hours exploring & taking in the incredible views. The history telling of muskets & canons through the fabulous (& funny) story telling skills of the Gunner Sergeant made the trip an extra memorable one!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 November 2023
- Kate B24 contributionsGreat fun at the castle.Despite the building work going on, we found lots to do. The walk with Charles II was informative and entertaining with audience participation. Likewise, the firing of the musket and cannon. There was no drill when we were there so we have an excuse to come again! We walked along the breakwater to the hermitage, so much history to learn. The cafe and shop were reasonable and staff friendly. The trip across on ‘Betty’ saved us having to swim. 🤣. We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 hours at the castle. 👍Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 March 2024
- Emma D5 contributionsFiring of the Canon made the visit!Having arrived on an early flight into Jersey and looking around the shops didn't take long I decided to venture out to Elizabeth Castle. I took the amphibious vehicle as I didn't want to walk the causeway! Unfortunately a lot of the buildings are currently under scaffolding as there was a lot of restoration work going on. It was very quiet I think tourists put off by the restoration work. I unfortunately missed the Charles the second interpretation but did manage to see the firing of the Canon and musket. He was absolutely fantastic and well got in to his role! Got his audience involved and was really funny! The views from the castle are fantastic, well worth a trip over there you can catch the amphibious vehicle near the grand Jersey Hotel or you can walk the causeway tide permitting. The prices in the cafe are a little bit eyewatering but when I went it was freezing so treated myself to a hot chocolate! Didn't quite understand the scone in the fridge thing?! Staff friendly and very helpful. Admission charge of 19.95 per adult seemed a little expensive for what was that but it did include transport to and from the island, if your visiting several of the historic sites on the island you can get a pass so only really pay for three out of the six. But I wasn't planning on doing this.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 March 2024
- andrayah7285 contributionsExcellent visitFascinating place with amazing history, so many things to mention - lovely green spaces with fabulous views. Amphibious vehicle to travel to and from the castle if the tide is in or you prefer not walk. DO NOT MISS the amazing interactive demonstration of muskets and cannon firing with the Sergeant, both entertaining and informative, he managed to gently insult and make us laugh while informing and educating us about the history of the castle and some of its armaments. Really good day - would be back often if we lived closer. Thank you.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 April 2024
- Julie RHorsham District, United Kingdom5 contributionsElizabeth castleElizabeth castle is a fantastic place to visit. Especially on a sunny day. Easy to find and easy to access via an amphibious bus (or you can walk, but check tides!) The fort itself is large and well maintained. There is a small cafe serving food and drink and a gift shop with the usual things for sale. (The guide book is especially good.)!There are also plenty of picnic areas and clean and functional toilets available. We spent an enjoyable 4hrs looking about and being entertained by the ‘gunner’ a brilliant actor, who, with warmth, humour and a little mischief really made the whole experience one to remember. St Helier, whom the main town is named after, hermits cave is also on the site and worth a look at…so long as you don’t mind steep steps. It is a wonderful place for younger visitors as well as interesting enough for older visitor's. And should definitely be on your radar as a good place to visit if you are on the island of Jersey.Thank you for leaving us this review following your recent visit to Elizabeth Castle. Your comments regarding the facilities, café, picnic areas and general appearance of this large site on which the castle is situated are very much appreciated. We are glad that you were able to visit the Hermitage and thus experience the history surrounding the naming of St Helier. Our Living History reenactors at the castle are an extremely important and enjoyable part of the visitor experience and therefore we are delighted that the 'gunner' made your whole experience one to remember!Written 24 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 April 2024

We got to the kiosk about 10.15 so that we could catch the first boat out to the castle.
What a great place.
Nice and clean and loads of information to be had.
One thing I could fault them on is that there could have been more artefacts from the time in certain rooms such as the WW2 bunkers.
Make sure you do the talk with King Charles the second. The chap who does it is very good there is good audience participation and the tour is very informative, he really made our morning.
The castle itself is huge and very much worth a visit.
The cost is just over £15 per adult, which is a bit on the high side but it is worth it.
It is cheaper if you walk the causeway rather than take the boat.

On arrival a guide met us and said if we hurried up we could catch a tour guide who had already started! We did catch up with a lady called Sue but could not hear what she said as too many people and she had no microphone. We therefore ambled over to the cannons where there was a film crew filming All Around Britain for ITV. We watched them for a while. Staff then told us filming took precedence on the day and the event planned on parade ground at 12 would take place at 2. Worth a visit for the incredible views and seeing Alex Beresford and Ria Hebdon but came away rather disappointed.

Such an great day. 2 adults, 13 year old and 7 year old
We all love it.
I have visited a lot of castles, but here, a real cannon firing and a real gun firing all such a brilliant thing to watch, you don’t get to see that at other castles.
The boat on wheels is novel too, go there on land and back on water is fun.
But for us the best part was meeting King Charles II & doing his tour. He was AMAZING so funny, he made history so much fun, my youngest loved following him as he interacted with him, in character all the time, the whole group loved him as people talked about him after to us saying he was so good.
When I asked my kids what was there favourite memory of Jersey they said the castle meeting King Charles.
So a Very big thank you for such a great set up

We always like visiting the castle so was a must do for this summer's staycation. Entry is included in our familys heritage pass which also gives us access to the puddle ducks to save our legs to get there and back. The heritage team are great and set aside time to clean the ducks in these covid times and also take a register so they can contact anyone visiting. The castle itself is always amazing, with so much to see and do. There are a few places with occupancy limits for now to stop too many people in small places but it is a never a long wait. Always a treat to get out to the castle and a must do for anyone visiting the island.

This place is brilliant. I love history and dragged my son along expecting him to be bored -he does have an interest in castles, but he’s 4 years old! The volunteer guide was so knowledgable and made the history relevant and interesting. But the best part was the battalion guard, dressed in uniform who gave us a history of the castle and jersey war and the role the Guardsman played in defending the castle with muskets and cannon. My son was fascinated and we even got to see him fire a musket and canon which was really exciting for the kids. We spent hours there and left feeling thoroughly entertained. The Tower of London should really take a note from this place to see how it’s done!
The little boat ride to the castle itself was also a novelty and very fun! It was a pleasure to visit this place and money well spent!

Visited the castle today and ended up being there all day as there was more to do than we expected. Both the Jersey heritage presenters were excellent being both informative and knowledgable whilst having a great sense of humour, The gunnery sergeant was great fun and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with his guidance as an army recruit. I also thoroughly enjoyed listening to King Charles II and he had all of us laughing throughout his presentation. Would recommend that anyone visiting the castle ensure they don't miss either of these historic talks.

A very entertaining visit to the castle. We had previously walked over the causeway 40 years ago, enjoying getting our toes wet but now in our later years we appreciated the ride over and back, nice little “boat” trip. The castle has certainly improved with two men bringing history alive, one was dressed as King Charles II, he showed us various parts of the castle with a very amusing manner, reminded us of our history too, a lot better entertainer then many on the tv! The second man was dressed as a Gunner in 1781, he was also very informative and made the crowd feel part of his drill, especially when my husband volunteered to be one of 6 men to help load and fire the cannon. Nice cafe, clean loos, a very good few hours spent.

Elizabeth Castle is worth a visit. We got the ‘duck’ boat across although the tide was out so we were not at sea. You can also walk across at low tide. It cost £50 for a family of 4 which was reasonable. The volunteer who was dressed up in military uniform and have demonstrations of a musket being fired was the highlight for the kids and was really knowledgeable. The history is set out really well and you can climb to the top of the castle for great views. We spent a couple of hours there but you could probably spend longer. The cafe is nice for refreshments.

The whole Elizabeth Castle experience was a great day out. Travelled over on the Puddleduck and had good look around the castle. Then at noon we met Charles II by the cross in the parade square. The next hour was pure joy. He took us on a short tour and fully explained the history of the castle and a bit about St Helier and Jersey. He was tremendous value! With a humorous cheeky delivery, he gently poked fun at some of the 20--30 of us who followed him around. I'm not sure if the king is there everyday but if he's there when you visit then you're in for a treat!

Really e joyed the visit of 2 hours and made sure it coincided with the free tour organised by the Jersey Heritage volunteers. Nicely paced walk and tour and well worth doing. The cafe at the castle is also quite good...jacket potatoes or jersey pasties with decent portion of salad there is extra seating above the cafe accessed via steps plus a cafe garden.

Hi we are visiting Jersey at the end of November, unfortunately when Elizabeth Castle, is no longer open. Does anyone know if we would still be able to walk across to the castle if tide is out?
Thanks
Written 28 October 2018
Yes, you can walk to the castle however you can’t actually go in the castle. I think it’s not necessarily worth the trip without the full visit.
You could try searching Gorey Castle, which is a castle on the east side of Jersey which is equally as important.

As far as I know. There is a good coffee shop there and certainly plenty of space. Worth contacting the attraction direct to be sure. Enjoy.

Walk to castle at low tide, how long does it take? Does it slippery and do we need wellies? I'm planning to just wear trainers if it's ok, but really want to experience the feeling of walk out at low tide. Thanks!

Trainers will be OK,it is slippery if seaweed is on the walkway but you can walk on the sand and depends on how fast you want to take it but no more than 15 minutes on a slow pace
