About
Immerse yourself in the Island’s shipbuilding past with songs and stories of the sea, Jersey privateers and pirates, and maritime legends. Learn hands-on about the tides and designing a ship. Then follow the story of Jersey’s seafood, beach and seaside entertainment. Just outside, in the harbour, look at the historic Jersey boats lovingly restored by Jersey Heritage boat shop volunteers – the unique story of each boat can be discovered in the museum. Also on-site is the Occupation Tapestry Gallery, 13 panels of the tapestry woven by Islanders, which depicts a life of hardship during the five years of Occupation by German armed forces during the Second World War.

We visited on a rainy day for something to do. Really interesting and educational. Good hands on activities. Staff friendly and helpful. The tapestry gallery was also interesting and we learnt a lot.

    A tapestry comes to life!
The Maritime Museum is very good, but the Occupation Tapestry is absolutely outstanding! This piece of Jersey-wide work is moving memorabilia which tells the story of Jersey's five years of occupation. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing the tapestry (and bought the book as a keep sake), so much that I returned for a second visit before my return flight home! I would more than recommend a visit here and it is possible, I am told, to purchase a ticket just for the Tapestry if not interested in the Maritime Museum also. There is a video explaining the story of the tapestry's construction in the gallery. I visited with my Jersey Heritage Pass 4for3 'deal' and the Tapestry counts as part of the visit to the Maritime Museum. Located just behind Liberation Square this is an excellent activity to do.

    Couldn’t be better!
Absolute gem of the museum. So any interactive things for the children, as well as beautiful arts and crafts. Plenty of information if you are looking for a real insight into the maritime history of Jersey. Just wonderful. Highly recommend! Make sure you also make time for the Occupation Tapestry, so beautiful.

    Interesting to visit. Never forget.
Something nice to do when it is raining. Staff excellent! Informative and nice. Third time in Jersey so I felt I might have kind of understood some of the hell Jersey folk went through during the occupation, but though our generation's childhood was moulded by the war, it was still very emotional to see the tapestry. Having visited the german hospital as a child, I could not visit that 'attraction' whilst in Jersey again, and mum nearly had a heart attack years back when we descended the bunker to see a waxwork nazi studying his desk in uniform, so imprinted was the threat in her head: she had to have a sit down with a fan, but on this occcasion, in this museum, this display was very well done and the staff were all very informative. Also, the real history of the sea in Jersey was amazing! I saw a photo of an aircraft landing on a beach on one wall. I first came to Jersey in probably an ex-war Bristol which took our 2 x Ford populars from Southend to Jersey during the late 60's. It boarded throught the front of the aircraft but no photos were in evidence. Interactive activities throughout the displays are designed to hold children's interest...when it's wet....
Thank you for such a great review and a wonderful example of the emotions seeing the Occupation Tapestry can evoke. We are so pleased you enjoyed your visit.

    Maritime Fun
This Museum is a little gem. Clean, tidy and packed with loads of automitons. Great for grown up children as well as little ones. Tells the story of the sea, from the basics of sailing to the principles boat building. The Museum also houses the Island Liberation Tapestry, which is worth the entry fee to see on its own. A nice little souviner shop, clean toilets and charming staff, there is nothing to dislike about this attraction.
Thank you for taking to the time to leave us your feedback about your recent visit to our Maritime Museum . We are thrilled that you enjoyed your whole experience at this heritage site, including the very unique Occupation Tapestry.

    Worth a visit
The Maritime Museum, is situated near the harbour. It cost £11.95 for a concession entry. There are toilets but no cafe. You are allowed out and back in again, which is what we did. There is quite a bit to keep children amused in the museum. What I found of great interest, was the tapestry room. There are 13 large tapestries, sewn by the people of Jersey, telling the story of occupation to liberation, from 1940-1945. So much information. Well worth a visit.

    Great visit
Spent a couple of hours here in the afternoon. Wasn't particularly busy so could get round it easily. Lots of interactive things to do for all ages. Particularly liked being in the ships cabin which "swayed on the sea". Even if you don't have an interest in maritime history it's a great place to visit. The photographs and art exhibition are lovely. As someone who gets a little bored in traditional museums, this had so much to do if definately recommend
Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review. As you mention, the Maritime Museum has many varied displays and exhibitions for all ages and interests throughout the galleries and we are delighted that you spent an interesting and entertaining few hours at our museum.

A definite must when in St Helier
Although we mainly went for the Occupation Tapestry we did take the time to go around the whole museum and are really pleased we did. There are lots of things to see (and do) and for the younger ones there are switches and wheels and loads of other things they can interact with. One exhibit that we really enjoyed was the screen showing recipes from some local people and we made sure we picked up the printout’s from reception. The only comment we left was that a couple of place to sit near the screen would be a great addition.

    Great quirky museum!
I didn’t know what to expect when going in here especially because it’s maritime and tapestry- how would that work but it is great and works so well the tapestry is slightly off from the maritime section and also you can just do that on its own if you want! The museum is great and interactive both for children and adults! The ship was a surprise! We liked the stories told via the globe!! We saw lots but there’s so many photos and stories we probably missed some so would definitely visit again!!

This museum is packed from floor to rafter with pieces of interest, moving items and appropriate sounds, so plenty to interest young and old. The centre display is absolutely fascinating. having looked around the galleries, we finished at the tapestries, which told the story of Jersey during the war. These were beautifully executed and cleverly composed showing the story of Jersey under the Nazis from their arrival until the liberation. If you don't have time for all the many museums and attractions on Jersey make time to visit.

The main purpose of our visit to the museum was to see the Occupation Tapestries.

12 panels showing life during the Nazi Occupation (with a 13th added later). They are very well displayed, with interactive panels explaining fully what's on view.

Beautifully made and very moving.

A very helpful staff member answered all our questions.

(Lower change of £4.95 if you only want to see the tapestries rather than the whole museum)

Had a good trip to this museum. Lots to see and lots of interactive items. Ideal for kids and big kids who like making noise. So much naval history and exhibits. We bought the Jersey Heritage 4 for 3 deal that allowed us to see four attractions including the two castles. It also houses the occupation tapestry's that were very interesting to see especially with the interactive and video information.

Pretty made museum with lots of input.
However, it completely left me behind and I lost track and thread at some point. At every corner there are tons of possibilities where you can try or open something or where there is detailed information.

Too much good for me. To just "stroll through like this" the entrance is too expensive.

Poor value for money. It cost us £11 per adult for about an hour’s entertainment. The Occupation Tapestry was worth seeing, but the Maritime Museum is overdue a complete overhaul. The interactive exhibits were like something from the 1980’s. It is far inferior to the Jersey Museum & Art Gallery, which costs the same amount.

We dropped in completely unplanned to escape the pouring rain. What a brilliant surprise. A really quirky interactive museum, great for families as everything is hands on. We built a boat, tested sails, smelled awful smells from the sea, traced the journey of 18th century traders and had loads of fun. Yes some of the exhibits are getting dated and in need of a refresh but the kid didn’t notice.

Also the Occupation Tapestries were incredibly moving. The interpretation for kids, explaining the story from the perspective of one family was perfect for our 8 year old and opened the door for some moving conversations.

We ended up getting the 4 for 3 pass, highly worth it if you’re here for a week. The lady working reception at the museum was so welcoming and took time to explain everything to us. Great customer service.

Fantastic little museum, so well put together for families. Lots of things to read and learn for adults but also an abundance of interactive activities for young children. So many things to touch build, buttons, levers, doors to open, sounds. My 9 year old loved it.

When we visited this museum which is situated alongside the attractive marina in St Helier, my husband spent most of his time upstairs in the main museum whilst for me it was the lure on the ground floor and the tapestry depicting Jersey's experiences during the Second World War. Hubby found the museum to be interesting and well laid out, without being too detailed or extensive. For me, the tapestry was fantastic and fascinating. The work involved is unbelievable and each scene is so carefully portrayed and beautifully sewn. Under each scene is a clear explanation of the various sections, along with information about the 12 parishes and the sewers who contributed - so enjoyable to learn about those responsible for such exquisite work. To our minds, this museum is a 'must' for anyone interested in Jersey's history.

Maritime museum— not often not terribly excited about a museum, but…

It has some cool stuff…like what’d ya find in grandpas shed.
It has some cool science stuff…like what’d ya find in a first year university science club.

I liked the occupation tapestry much better. It’s in a totally separate room.
