About
The Golden Hind in Brixham Harbour, is one of only two full sized replicas in the world of 16th century explorer and privateer Sir Francis Drake's famous ship. The Ship has been a feature of picturesque Brixham harbour for over fifty years, entertaining and educating thousands of visitors during this time - as well as being featured on many tv programmes and films. The Ship is open come rain or shine and is an all weather attraction with many indoor displays as well as wide open decks and on-board activities.

- LlamaKBedfordshire, United Kingdom162 contributionsGreat visitWe had a great time exploring the Golden Hind, really informative, great free downloadable audio tour to your smartphone. Took roughly an hour 45 for 2 adults to explore, including reading all the information boards. ‘Walking the plank’ was a fun little addition.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 September 2023
- WenPontypridd, United Kingdom13 contributionsInformative and interestingWe thought the ship was a little like a tardis-a lot more to see inside than you think from the outside. Was imformative and interesting. A little tatty in places and needs some maintenance but still worth a visit.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 July 2024
- Ming YBridgwater, United Kingdom67 contributionsGreat Fun with History for Kids both Young and Old!Having been to Brixham many times for day trips and short breaks, we had never actually been on the Golden Hind Museum Ship there. Yesterday my Hubby & I went on board to have an explore! It was such fun, even though navigating the steep steps was a bit hairy as I have slight mobility issues but managed it okay. I came down backwards and felt fine. The ship itself is quite small, but full to the brim of so many interesting items plus various displays enough to entertain even the smallest of children (big children too, I loved the Dad Jokes all around the ship especially and I'm 65!) plenty to keep all busy and amused. If you are over 65 you can have a concession price, it was cheap enough to go on full price anyway! It was a great way to pass the time in lovely Brixham. I found it quite a unique and enjoyable experience.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 July 2024
- Helen GLiverpool, United Kingdom14 contributionsThe most amazing overnight stay!We stayed on board The Golden Hind for one night. My two little ones aged 2 and 3 had THE BEST experience. There are two cabins, one with bunk beds and pirate themed bedding and a gorgeous adult room with king sized bed and huge tv. We slept wonderfully. A treasure hunt was provided which was so much fun for little ones (and adults) we got a takeaway and ate at the outside table admiring the view. It is such a fantastic experience and I would 100% recommend an overnight stay on board.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 July 2024
- Ali0818London, United Kingdom353 contributionsInteresting visitVery informative visit with lots to read and see. The tour is self guided so you could rush around and miss things. This is especially true with children who are given a find the stamp trail and rush to get to each station. I would have liked a pepper guided tour to really bring everything to life. However it was a good place to visit and not overly expensive. Daughter was extremely pleased with her prizes for finishing the trail. Excellent experience for both adults and children! The setting of the ship is great, right in the middle
of the harbour, the children’s trail on the ship is fun and the audio guide about the ship is very informative. There’s also a short film running in the museum part of the ship. Highly recommended!

I took my two children (7 + 8). It was £20. The whole tour took a little over 30 minutes which is quite expensive. There is little interaction, although the activity card kept them focused. The stairs are a challenge and downstairs is quite tight - noting it is a historical ship, not built for 21st century adults. Kids loved it though. Certainly gave an insight into how difficult it would have been to live on board.

As two adults, the depth of history on display here was somewhat lacking. It's a well-built attraction with friendly staff, but really aimed at children. If you're coming as a group of adults, you will probably be finished quite quickly.

Really enjoyed our visit. There was plenty to keep the children interested. I would say it's suitable for school aged, rather little ones.
It's quite tight to get around with steep steps for those with mobility difficulties.
The staff were friendly and informative. They were managing social distancing well. Lots to look at and read about. It really gives you a sense of what it must have been like on board.
Reasonably priced for a unique experience.

What a fun overnight experience! Sean and his team were really friendly and happy to play along with the surprise for our son. Not much sleep was had due to the excitement level and unfamiliar ship noises but the cabins were comfy and clean. We had a takeaway delivered to the ship which was novel, and sat in the grand salon listening to the local brass band and generally played at pirates all night. Really this experience needs more marketing, it’s so unique and fun for big and little kids alike. Downsides? Hard to find any but having to use the public loos for ‘number 2s’ is a little inconvenient but totally understandable and manageable, wouldn’t complain about that. Nice touches - mini fridge for some milk, kettle for hot drinks and of course the massive tv in the main cabin with pirate dvds on loop!
Loved our stay, would highly recommend

Our 6 year old daughter has repeatedly told us this was the highlight of her holiday to Devon. A really fun experience and lots of interesting facts with an activity sheet for the children with clues to get their stamps. I have to admit I didn't expect it to be so good!

It's not big, it's not luxurious but it is a fascinating insight into life on board an Elizabethan ship. Tough does not begin to describe conditions on board. Well worth an hour of your time and young children will love it......

And a three year old grandson!!! - who really enjoyed it , would have loved to spend much more time reading the facts and filling in the questions to our quiz properly , but a three year old who loves pirates , the boats wheel and lots of cannons made this far too exciting!! Good value and a lovely `pirate ` thing to do in Brixham....I even managed to drill in the name `Francis Drake` so a little history lesson aswell...great effects and loving our history!!

is it open in beggining of september?on a week day
Written 17 February 2019
I think it is. I was on Easter time but I think the beginning of September is the peak time for tourists so it shoul be open. Also it is on the bay, between lots of other small ships, so it is not going away :)

Hi is the ship accessable with a pushchair?
Written 27 July 2018
Some of the ship is but there are steps down to the lower and upper desks which you wouldn't not be able to get the pushchair up and down so you might struggle to see much.
Hope this helps
Written 27 July 2018
How accessible is it for disabled people? Is there somewhere to secure a powered wheelchair for a child?
Written 31 August 2017
I don't know for certain but I would guess no. the ship has steep ladders, I think it would be extremely difficult. However the staff were very helpful so perhaps see if you can contact them via the website to ask the question. sorry I can't be more helpful.
