    Frustration after Frustration
Campsite is fine, facilities are fine, parks are great for the kids. The one thing that spoiled our weekend was not being able to buy anything with cash money. Everything is card only. You lost at least £40 from the shop at the lake as you didn’t take cash, much to the disgust of the children as they wanted an ice creams, we needed some swim shoes too which one of the kids had to go without. Same in the shop, which if I remember last year took cash, but again go to get an ice cream and some camping bits, oh look card only again & 4 very upset children, you lost another £25 and just got a shrug of the shoulders from the young lad behind the till. We were only camping for 2 nights so didn’t bring many supplies with us as we knew the shop stocked a decent supply. But no, got a pocket full of cash but can’t spend it. It’s ok we thought we’re go to the old sawmill for dinner as we couldn’t get anything from the shop, nope, card only again. 4 adults & 4 kids having dinner, drinks, ice creams. Say £120 minimum. That’s £185 from just 2 families in JUST 2 days!. Can you afford to be losing this much from every visitor you have over the summer? Not a very sustainable business model from somewhere that has such a diverse range of people and ages visiting and staying with you. We couldn’t even order anything to take away. The older generation (not all) are not going to sit out in a tent and scan a QR code to look at a menu and be expected to order and pay on a phone. They just won’t do it and your lose out. I cannot find anything on your website to say it’s a cashless site and it has made our stay very frustrating and to be totally honest, I doubt we will come back because of it. 3 years running we have brought our young kids here and they have grown up loving this place and the parks. You have not made it easy and that’s a shame when camping with young demanding children. What does make me chuckle though is you guys are happy for cash to be used in the games room and the kids to pester there parents to go and spend a small fortune to win tat toys from the arcade machines.
Good afternoon, Thank you very much for your review. We're sorry to hear that our cash-free payment options around the site were frustrating for you during your visit. We started the cash-free payment system during the pandemic and have had lots of positive feedback from visitors since it was introduced, especially with the recent additions of both Apple and Google Pay. Giving visitors additional ways of paying using their smart devices. The Games Room is operated by an external company and we will work with them to try and bring this in line with our own policy. We appreciate that a cash-free site isn't for everyone and would like to thank you for your feedback and comments. We hope to welcome you again in the future. Best wishes, Gareth

Heaven for kids but could be better
Really lovely site, loads to do for the kids they loved it for the adults a bit hit and miss. The pitches are a bit odd, all different sizes, mostly sloping and some sandwiched together so doesn't have a very restful feel. Shower blocks had nice hot showers but leaning towards the basic. Food is really expensive but ok, nice to have the option instead of cooking. The staff were all great, really friendly and helpful, especially the activity staff. We were a bit disappointed with the cycle options especially as the site seems to promote what is on offer. They were tired, overgrown and a bit confusing. Fun for two minutes then not sign posted. There's a difference between having some elements of risk riding in nature and being poorly maintained and a bit borderline with safety. If we come back would be good to see the tracks spruced up with more beginners options. It was definitely an expensive weekend, I think really hard to do the trip on a budget but it's a unique sort of place and we all enjoyed it overall.
Good afternoon, Thank you very much for your review, it is great to hear that you enjoyed your time with us! Great to also hear that the staff were friendly and helpful during your stay. We take great pride in our customer service and they will be very happy! Your comments regarding the Bike Trail have been noted and this will be passed to the team. Thank you once again and we look forward to seeing you again soon! Best wishes, Gareth

Feeling rather short changed, showers need a deep clean.
I paid £677 for one week in my caravan with wife and 3 children. So at nearly £100 per night our expectations were high. The positives first there is a lot of playgrounds etc and the scenery and setting is beautiful. However when you pay nearly £100 a night I expected more. The glamorous activities are all extra (zip wire £11 per person, high ropes £22 per person plus booking fee). We did the high ropes and zip wire but you do wonder what we are paying nearly £100 per night for? There was no evening entertainment and the playgrounds were nothing special considering the money paid. It’s card only and no cash so be warned you need to load up your bank account. The lack of human interaction is also very impersonal, all done online they email you your pitch number and car pass (to print at your own cost). You don’t even check in at reception and just drive straight to your pitch. The is a theme of a lack of staff around and those who you do see with the odd exception are very young, the boy in the shop told me he was 17 and so could not sell me alcohol. Most staff look about 18 to 21. Worst of all was the lack of cleanliness of the toilets and showers. My nearest block (called Woodlands) was very poor, it varied from just about passable on one day, the other days it was dire. Full of mud, leaves and stagnant water. The fly traps were caked with dead flies, the whole block looked as if it needed a thorough deep clean and refurb. See pictures. I have been caravaning for 10 years and been to sites all over the U.K. and Europe and these shower facilities were the dirtiest I have seen. Overall one left here feeling thoroughly short changed.
Good afternoon, Thank you for taking the time to share your review with us. We're sorry to hear that you felt unsatisfied during your recent visit. Both our camping and B&B tariffs include free entry to our award-winning visitor attraction, with lots of activities included within this, for the duration of your stay. However, our Dare Devil activities and Dartmoor Bike Park are available at an additional cost. Full details can be found on our website. We take great pride in our customer service and we're sorry to hear that you felt this was impersonal in this instance. We also try our best to ensure there is always a friendly member of staff nearby to help and assist visitors with any questions they may have. We introduced online booking systems and cash-free payment options to improve customer wait times and efficiency with the aim of enhancing the overall customer journey. We are currently experiencing a very typical British summertime with lots of wet and windy weather. In turn, unfortunately, leaves and mud often get walked into the facilities during busy periods. The amenity blocks are being monitored continuously throughout the day, and with cleanliness being our top priority, we have now also increased the cleaning schedules of them to suit. Thank you once again for your comments and we hope to welcome you back again in the near future. Best wishes, Gareth

    A great campsite for families
We have been meaning to revisit River Dart as last time we came our daughters (7) were toddlers. We came with friends this time and really enjoyed the impressive adventure playgrounds and lake. The site is very easy, the showers are reliably hot, didn’t have to queue. They seemed to be cleaned regularly. We would like to come again and try the bike trails which look great and some of the paid activities like the climbing wall which are for over 8s. Things which could be improved would be the service. It did feel a bit impersonal really. It seemed like the site was run by teams of rather young workers perhaps on break from school, often seemed a bit bored and not very engaged. A proper welcome at the barrier with some directions to your pitch would have been good. The sawmill pub offers pizza or mainly pub food with chips. The food although not particularly cheap was average and rather bland, some more choice and higher quality ingredients would have been good. The ordering system was annoying, no option to just order at the bar. Had to use QR codes at the tables with our phones not working well. On the third night we drove to ashburton and brought back a takeaway which was a welcome change. The shop doesn’t stock much food, perhaps to encourage more trade at the Sawmill, it’s mainly toys and sweets. My friend and I felt that some of the workers drove their vehicles much too quickly round the site. Didn’t seem any need to be in such a hurry and it seemed dangerous in an area with lots of children and dogs.
Good morning, Thank you for sharing your great review with us. It certainly sounds as though you all had a fantastic visit! We take great pride in our level of customer service and your feedback is very much appreciated. We introduced the QR code and touchscreen ordering systems to improve the overall customer experience at the Old Sawmill. Since introducing them, we have seen both reduced wait times and efficiency during busy periods. Thank you once again for your comments and we hope to welcome you all back again soon! Best wishes, Gareth

Lives up to the memory as a kid visiting this site
Used to come to this site as a kid and wanted to return with my family. Still lives up to the memory as a kid and me and the family with 2 young girls loved camping here. Will 100% be back again! Pros: Site itself is great and relatively nice flat pitches Amazing setting with woodlands all around Loads to do on site and kids were well and truly exhausted from all the activities. Only used the restaurant for breakfast on one day, but was good and the food i did see being served for lunch and dinner looked good. Cons: It was bank holiday so maybe to be expected, but there were some very loud groups partying until late. Didnt appear to be any action from River Dart to ask them to be quiet come 11pm. My advice from the site would be to maybe group larger group bookings in one place to avoid families with young children being kept awake. Toilet bloc to be fair is cleaned on a regular basis and they do their best to curtail the mud being dragged in from the woodlands and fields. But they could do with being updated. Showers okay, but if all in use can run to nothing but a dribble of water. Shop is okay, too many naff toys on offer, would be nice if there was more produce and stuff for a bbq. But its open i think until 9.30pm which is a positive as a lot of site shops shut early.
Good morning, Many thanks for sharing your recent experience with us, we really appreciate it! It is great to hear that you had wonderful memories of the site and enjoyed it with your family this time. As a family-friendly site, we ask visitors to keep noise to a level that will not disturb other visitors at all times, with no noise after 11pm. We also have wardens patrolling the site from 9pm onwards. They can be contacted if visitors have any issues at all. Great day out
Went for the day with my three year old son. He had the time of his life and loved every minute of it. The facilities are incredible - so many adventure playground activities. He loved the wooden fort and the spiders web. Whole site is cashless with QR codes to scan to order food in restaurant - I loved that. So easy, I was on my own with my son so it was great to be able to sit at our table, order and pay quickly and easily when we wanted. We had long sleeves and sturdy boots on, glad we did because although August the shade of the trees mean it is cool and he would have been cold in a t shirt. Boots essential for waking over tree roots safely. Only negative is that all the staff are about 14 years old and totally clueless about the park and just life in general really. It’s quite funny - like it’s a reality TV show about what would happen if you let a load of teenagers run a holiday park. They do an alright job, considering.
Good morning, Many thanks for your feedback. We are very pleased to hear that you had a great day out! We're also pleased to hear that you enjoyed using our QR code ordering system. Great to hear that you experienced how easy and efficient it is! Many thanks for your comments and we hope to see you again soon! Best wishes, Gareth

River Dart Country Park was amazing! There are lots of wonderful adventures you can have there. The best part personally for me were the high ropes. At first they seemed very scary, but after a while it began to feel incredible! As well as the high ropes there are loads of awesome adventure playgrounds which all kids will love! Only thing was that sadly the gift shop wasn’t open… but other than that the trip was spectacular!

Just come back from a last minute weekend away in our trailer tent here and we were blown away by how amazing it was. So much for the kids to do, the river was gorgeous, the play parks are endless and brilliant and the site is lovely and well maintained. We had a big pitch with electric and check in was super easy. I also want to add (especially seeing some other negative views to the contrary) that we were incredibly impressed by the smiles/helpfulness and attitude of the very young people (mostly lads) working here. Nothing was too much trouble and they were kind and patient with our children. We'll definitely be coming back.

Visited with 2 adults and 3 pre teens today, first time for us since we were kids. We just paid the admission to get in and didn't pay for any extras as we didn't really want to pay any extra money for anything today. Just really wanted to enjoy the lake and cool off in the heatwave!
We spent a good couple of hours in and around the lake, which even though was fairly busy felt really peaceful surrounded by all the trees, the kids also went off to explore the assault course and zip wire area which was great, and was lovely and cool in the shade!
We stayed around 4 and 1/2 hours but could easily have stayed for longer, especially if we had booked one of the other activities to do. The kids all want to go back to have a go at the canoeing and maybe the high ropes course so will definitely be back a couple of times next year! Can't believe we haven't visited with our kids before seeing as we only live 20 mins down the road! I think it was the cost that put us off but actually considering what we pay for an hour in our local swimming pool it's really good value, especially on a sunny day!
We took a picnic so can't say what the food is like there, but we did get ice creams from the oasis snack hut, which i would like the management to know we were served by a really friendly young man called Ryan. He was incredibly polite and courteous to everyone he served, which made it a very pleasant experience.
Anyway thankyou River Dart Country Park we will return!!!

Me and my girlfriend are new to mountain biking and wanted to check out the bike park. We saw online videos of the bike park and thought it would be perfect for us to practice some basic skills. We are local to Plymouth so distance would mean that visiting the bike park would be a regular occurrence.

That's until we realised the ridiculous pricing for this park. Initially £4.00 each for a day sounds real good. Don't mind paying for parking on top of that but then you realise that you get charged a crazy amount just to enter the grounds. £40 to visit the bike park is insane, this place really needs to look at their pricing. There are plenty of other places that you can visit in the same area that offer the same activities for a fraction of the price.

If you are going to charge an entry fee, at least include some fun activities in the price but there just isn't any. The website states when you purchase a day ticket that "many activities included in the price" but if you actually look there's only the tennis courts included which you need to bring your own rackets and balls for. Not looking at the hiring of equipment which should be an extra cost. Bike park, high ropes, zip wire, climbing experience, caving, and bouldering room, are all not included in the price.

I would love to visit this bike park but I cannot justify paying the ridiculous price.

Had a great few days in our caravan despite the wet British weather. Thanks to Joe the warden who helped us move our caravan, all staff were so helpful. The pitches are a great size and the showers are always hot. Our kids go off on their bikes and the park feels safe to allow them to do this which I love.
The food and staff at the restaurant were really good. So impressed with the take away tubs, was a great option when place was very busy because of wet weather. The buffet breakfast was also really good, highly recommend that.
