The Abbey is well worth a visit. I would recommend taking the time to view the video of the History. The grounds are beautifully kept.

The abbey is relatively newly restored after Henry VIII's ravages and the story of the few monks who rebuilt it is fascinating. The setting is peaceful and beautiful. We visited on Boxing Day and there were very few visitors there so it felt even more peaceful. The gardens will be lovely in the summer but were still good to wander... More

Worth locating the audio-visual display (through the shop) first for information on the Abbey and monks. The Abbey itself is very ornate (to the point of distraction from its religious significance) but nonetheless a remarkable monument to the vision of the monks of the early 20th century. We will return to see the gardens in flower but not too eat... More

I'm not religious but enjoy English history and architecture. In Buckfast, the Church is newly built and relatively unremarkable as English religious buildings go (sorry!). The gardens/grounds are quite small. There's also some interesting points such as a piece of Thomas More's hair coat and a beautiful stain glass windowed chapel. There's little information around as to its history. Overall,... More

It was amazing to wander around this Abbey - to think it was build so recently - great job. Loved the quiet reflection space it gave on our trip and the gardens looked lovely, but we could not walk around due to the weather.

The Abbey is lovely inside and they have a very interesting relic, the hair shirt of Thomas More. From a room accessed via the shop you can view a very interesting video. The shop stocks produce made in monasteries all over Europe, it has some very interesting gifts, including some great wines & beers. Free to get in, this is... More

The Abbey restaurant is clean very reasonably priced. There is no entrance charge here plenty to see and read including a short screening all about abbeys and monasteries. If... More

Not sure i would base a whole day around this, but if you are staying nearby it is definitely worth a visit. There is a truly breathtaking stained glass chapel in the abbey, and a gift shop offering the finest goods monks and nuns from around Europe can produce.
