Tranquil and a real feeling of the Lords presence
What a stunning place this is. So interesting and a place of tranquility. The church building is beautiful and the stained glass windows at the end of the building are amazing, with the large one of Jesus mesmerising. We learnt such a lot about the Abbey and the life of a monk at Buckfast. Lovely lite lunch in the cafe, with such helpful staff. We will definitely return to Buckfast Abbey and very much look forward to it.
Thank you so much for the kind and descriptive review of your visit. We are absolutely delighted that you felt and learnt so much during your time here. We are really pleased that you will return to Buckfast Abbey and look forward to welcoming you back.

    Beautiful place.
We called in here on our way to Cornwall for lunch and a relaxing walk around the grounds. Everywere is well maintained, both gardens, abbey itself , loos and restaurant. Lunch in the restaurant offered a good choice of main meals and desserts if you had room! The museum itself was fascinating, only £2 to enter, guidebook only £1.50, excellent value for money as was the lunch. Museum embraces modern technology bringing the history of the abbey up to the present day, not a drawn out film just s sensible length for both children and adults. Plenty of parking.
Thank you very much for your kind and informative review. We are really delighted that you enjoyed your visit, including our delicious desserts! We do hope we can welcome you back on another occasion, our gardens are delightful all year round.

    Give Praise To The Brothers
Astonishing religious edifice of staggering awesomeness given how it is not that visible from the road network. Beautiful gardens to stroll about with every breath a scent sensation. Inside the Abbey is breathtaking, especially taking into account how relatively recent was it's rebuild by monks few in number. Afterwards retired to the superb eaterie with a good choice of menu. The shop and bookshop were for once dignified and not tacky. With such a temptation of mead treats to empty the purse. So easy to reach from the A30 as well so no excuse for not visiting.
It is so good to hear your review, we are very aware of how awesome the Abbey Church and gardens are but it’s good to hear you and others enjoy them too. Yes isn’t it astonishing that as few as largely 6 monks built the majority of the church as we see it today, completing it in 1937. We are really easy to find just off the A38 and with ample free parking and free entry, you’re absolutely right, there’s no reason to not visit:) Once again many thanks and hope to welcome you back again soon.

    Beautiful Abbey
A beautiful, historic, interesting Abbey. Do visit if you are in the area. Lovely cafe, reasonably priced. There is a shop near the entrance. Methodist Chapel on site is interesting, too. You should visit the interactive museum and gardens too. There is no entrance charge for the Abbey and gardens. There is a small charge for the museum.
Thank you for your detailed review. Your positive feedback inspires us to keep enhancing our facilities to ensure visitors experience Buckfast Abbey at its best. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed the interactive exhibition and gardens too. We can't wait to welcome you back for another delightful experience.

An enjoyable visit we would thoroughly recommend
The abbey was superb and the glass mosaic window of Jesus was stunning. Lovely grounds but it was wet when we went. Nice art exhibition and garden shop to visit. The food in the cafe was outstanding and very reasonable. All in all we had a really good couple of hours here. There’s a nice gift shop too. Oh yes, and we couldn’t believe it’s free to look around the abbey.
Thank you for your kind review and for taking time to share it with others. We are delighted you enjoyed your experience of Buckfast Abbey and it sounds like you managed to do everything, almost. Did you find time to explore the Monastic Way Exhibition? Many of our visitors find that fascinating. Perhaps you could visit again soon. Thanks again.

    A beautiful abbey
This is a tranquil and peaceful place to spend half a day (or more if the weather is fine and you sit in the gardens!) and we enjoyed the morning here. The gardens were immaculate and included a lavender garden, medieval and medicinal area and a memorial one also, as well as the general grounds surrounding the abbey. The stunning abbey was open all the time and was pristine and impressive whilst not being too imposing. Although an active place of worship the monks still living locally and following their calling this abbey was welcoming and so long as respectful of the services visitors were able to access at all times. Beautiful features in the abbey including stained glass windows are well worth the visit. It is also worth paying £2 each to visit the museum as this gave more insight into the abbey, the monks’ lifestyle and how things progressed over time. It would have been nice to have found out more about the making of the famous Buckgast wine and honey during this museum too, A delightful cream tea at the cafe completed our visit, and although this was all we had there seemed to be a range of reasonable priced hot and cold food available. The shop had plenty of souvenirs and we would return here again.
We wanted to say thank you for your kind review following your recent visit to Buckfast Abbey. It was truly heartwarming to hear that you enjoyed your experience visiting us including how much you enjoyed exploring the history and stories behind the community of monks in the Monastic Way Exhibition. We will share your detailed and thoughtful review with the team, they will be delighted to hear how much you enjoyed it.

    Just beautiful
We arrived just as it opened and we pretty much had the church to ourselves to have a look round and spend a small amount of time sat in quiet reflection before people started to arrive. The church has been beautifully restored and is very calming. The grounds have been carefully maintained and worth spending time lingering in. We spent an hour and a half there but wished we had taken longer to see everything and spent time mooching round the exhibition and gift shop.
Thank you so much for your kind review, it is heartwarming that you've taken the trouble to write this review for others to share. Perhaps you're able to visit us again soon and then perhaps find time to enjoy the exhibition, most people find it fascinating. Once again many thanks and we look forward to welcoming you again.

    Amazing Abbey
Buckfast Abbey has free parking and is free to enter. Plenty of toilets onsite. Shop and cafe onsite. Some great stone work and architecture and the inside of the tower roof is well decorated. I would recommend an early visit to miss the coach loads.
We are delighted to hear your kind review. Yes many people don't know it is free to enter and to park. Thanks again for taking the trouble to write this lovely review. We really do appreciate it. Hope you are able to visit us again soon.

Beautiful place. I’m not religious myself but I live local to the abbey and have visited on many occasions, it’s particularly lovely in the Christmas and summer time. Amazing grounds to walk around, well looked after. Nice place for a relaxing, quiet picnic or just a place to sit.

Another lovely lunch at The Grange restaurant, my husband had the steak and kidney pie whilst I enjoyed the Homity pie, Any chance of a Buckfast recipe book being published? We also like the new Green hub with an excellent array of very reasonably
priced plants , one of the best arrays of herbs I've seen. My husband bought a bottle of Buckfast wine which we later enjoyed .

What a beautiful place this is. The Abbey is simply stunning and, no matter what your beliefs, is definitely well worth a visit. The small gardens are relaxing and quite thought provoking. We were lucky to visit on a frosty but gloriously sunny January day and as we stood quietly we imagined how beautiful they must be during the spring, summer and autumn months. We also had a quick stop in the cafe for a mocha and cake, both of which were delicious. Definitely recommended.

This Abbey is wonderful, suitable for disabled, gift shop has plenty to buy, large carpark and clean toilets, nice cafe for a bite to eat, plenty of choice, went on Christmas eve with a coach party, we had to wait a hour to see inside the Abbey as there was a Xmas service on, but it was worth the wait.

What an incredible story for the Abbey. Benedictine Monks completely rebuilt the Abbey by hand over a 30 year period from around 1906. Whilst the interior is not as spectacular as some Churches or Cathedrals, there is an overwhelming sense of peace once inside. The carved stonework tells many stories. The modern and traditional stained glass windows are spectacular.
Surprisingly, entrance to the grounds and the Abbey is free (there is a donation box which you can donate towards upkeep; and parking is free. (Something we still can't get used to in UK having to pay for parking everywhere, unlike at home in Australia).
The gardens are meticulously maintained and a pleasure to walk around, again a peaceful feeling.
The café sells a range of snacks and meals and we enjoyed our early lunch, we went back in for takeaways for dinner.

Wonderful welcoming place that I come to almost every day as a local to walk my dog. I am so grateful for the free parking and peaceful grounds. It is the only place I can walk my dog locally without fear of other dogs attacking him and it’s an absolute godsend (pun intended) for me as I feel no anxiety walking here with him. I would be absolutely heartbroken to not have this place to walk. The gardens are so beautifully maintained and interesting in all seasons and weather. The only thing that I would love more than anything is for the woods to be open to the public (with strictly dogs on lead) as this would bring me even more joy and peace to visit daily.

Everyone is so lovely who works here. It has the best carvery around, we have to try very hard to restrain ourselves not to come for a meal every Sunday it’s so good and great value. The carvery team are really lovely and put a lot of effort into creating a beautiful offering - the veg selection is my favourite bit - the veg is always varied and delicious!

Thank you for your detailed review, we’re pleased that you are able to visit us so frequently, and with your dog too. Although a lot of the Abbey grounds are open to the public, it is not possible to allow access to the river and woodland as this is part of the monks’ own private grounds. You feedback of our carvery is much appreciated, we will make sure to share your appreciation with our staff in the Grange Restaurant.

I wish it let you have another family option, as I’m in my thirties and took my nan.

Anyway - 5*s all the way.

After a 2 hour drive, we had lunch at the Abbey’s restaurant and - between leaving the table and getting to the gents, the top button on my chinos had vanished!

I popped to the gift shop and the lovely staff there managed to find me some rope to hold up my trousers (what a souvenir!) I left a donation and they seemed so grateful - but I was more grateful for saving me from the embarrassment of my trousers falling down!

I took Nanny into the Abbey, and the staff there were again lovely. I’m a photographer and had my cameras with me and the gentleman in the Abbey politely explained about flash. I had a chat about not having flash anyway, and since Nan’s an avid church goer I always ask permission. Whilst it was a firm “don’t use flash”, the gentleman was very approachable and lovely (I did take a coupe of photos inside)

I, obviously, purchased the world famous tonic wine. I’m yet to try some, but knowing it was handmade at the Abbey by the monks is amazing!

I would 100% recommend going here to anyone
