About
The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the region. The former GWR branch line runs along the stunning valley of the Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a 14 mile round trip. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages. The railway also has a fascinating museum, gardens, riverside walk, locomotive restoration workshops, a gift and model railway shop, refreshment rooms and more. Free car parking at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth; Totnes is a 500 yard walk from the main line station.

- Frontera2Sandwich, United Kingdom460 contributionsLovely day outHad a great day out on the South Devon Railway with my elderly mum. All the staff we encountered were really friendly. Train was comfortable and to be met by the owl from the nearby sanctuary at Totnes was a real treat. Only slight niggle was the lack of disabled parking spaces at Buckfastleigh ( only 3 spaces available. ) All in all a nice day out, would recommend.Thank you for your review. I'm really pleased you enjoyed your day with us. We do have limited disabled parking at the moment and this is something that will be addressed in our car park and site development scheme soon. We hope to welcome you again in the future where you can enjoy our new and extensive facilities.Written 16 May 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2023
- Alex HBristol, United Kingdom27 contributionsPolar express good experience but not value for money…Took our family of 5 to the polar express experience in early December. The set up is good, parking attendants are organised and once out the car you go into the polar express village area I suppose you would call it, this was okay, not a lot to do for the kids whilst waiting but they do am have a well stocked if slightly overpriced gift shop. The experience starts in a large gazebo with actresses starting to tell the story (the actors/actresses are superb, except Santa more later). Then you walk to the platform and the conductor (actor) continues the story and you get onto the polar express as it pulls into the station with some fake snow. On the train more actresses bring the story alive and probably the best actor was hobo Joe, he was totally in character and I thought he did a superb job. Then you have hot chocolate and cookies, the conductor punches the tickets with a smiley face and the story continues where you reach the North Pole which is a station set up to look like a North Pole I think. You dont leave the train and then it reverses up the line but this time with Santa. We were at one end of the coach opposite to where Santa started, so by the time he came to us he was either pressed for time or lost interest. His elf handed out bells to us. Now if your familiar with the Polar Express story (I’ve personally watched 100’s of times, it’s a year round film for my kids😩) then you’ll know that those who don’t believe in Santa (adults) can’t hear the bell, my kids were asking me can you hear the bell and I was pretending not to hear it, santa then gave me another one and I said no I cant hear it, santa looked puzzled and I said it’s in the story that those who don’t believe can’t hear it. His response was i don’t know🤣 this didn’t ruin the experience but nor did it enhance it, but you would of thought anyone involved would know the story! Overall it was a nice experience but didn’t live up to the hype, for £160 I think it’s probably £60 overpriced.Hi Alex H, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. Due to the Polar Express being operated on our railway by a separate company, PNP Events, I'm not fully able to address the issues you have raised. I am however aware that the intention of the journey is to transform all the adult and children 'non-believers' of Santa to 'believers'. It sounds that the story conflicted with that you were hoping to present to your children, for which I understand is disappointing. Please be assured that your review has been shared with PNP Events and it will be used to enhance future shows.Written 16 May 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 2 April 2023
- martins0uthBridgwater, United Kingdom15 contributionsDisappointing visitA little disappointed. Visited on Easter day, on way back from a day trip in Cornwall. Advised no entry as we did not have 'wristbands'. Staff made no suggestions as to how or where to purchase wristbands. Went to shop where we made a purchase, spent nearly £30 on food in cafe. Went to look at a diesel loco along by cafe, chased down the path by staff asking if we had wristbands!, told no access without one. Asked same abrupt staff member about how to purchase tickets for miniature train, was told they are run by an independent organisation. Asked another two members of staff, one who eventually told us that today this was included in the price of the wristband. Volunteers are great but need managing and informing. Website is not very informative, just says with your train ticket you can also enjoy the rare breeds farm and otters and butterflies. We won't rush back.Hi martins0uth, Firstly, please accept my apologies for the experiences you encountered on your visit. Easter weekend was our 'Family Fun Weekend' where all additional attractions are included within the train fare. Entry to the attractions is granted by a wristband which is obtained at our Booking Office or Car Park entrance on the day. The miniature railway is indeed one of the attractions that is included with a wristband. During these events, entry to the site and its attractions is restricted to those only with a wristband. Our staff should have elaborated more on the ticketing arrangements at first contact and we will be enhancing pre-event briefings to reflect this.Written 16 May 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 April 2023
- marilyn smith5 contributionsDining experience. We included the dining experience with our trip. I must say we found the experience very rushed. Leaving at 12 10 and arriving back at 1 30 was just not long enough. The staff were brilliant but were obviously on a time scale. The meal was fine but needed to request things to accompany the meal. Items on menus were not available, but was replaced by alternative choices. I did expect a little more for the cost of £118 for 2. I say again the time scale meant that being so rushed you had no time to sit back and enjoy the train journey. Thanks for your review. Feedback like yours is really important and drives changes to our products and implements improvements. Our dining services utilise our timetabled passenger trains and as such, are restricted to a 12.10 departure and a 13.30 arrival. Although the journey time is around 1 hour 20 minutes, the entire time on board is around 2 hours as guests are invited to stay on board until 14.00 to finish their meal. Guests are also invited to use their tickets to enjoy further train journeys during the day if they wish. We have fed back the issues you had experienced with your meal to our external caterer so they are able to prevent these issues occurring again. Once again, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and provide us with the feedback of your experience.Written 10 July 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 June 2023
- hayley eExeter, United Kingdom25 contributionsAwful afternoon tea but excellent train journeyWe had afternoon tea on the train, when shown to our table the first thing I noticed was the stained table cloth and stained, dirty cups one of which had a sticky substance on the inside of the cup. We asked for a fresh cup, they washed out the cup and brought it back. On mentioning the stained table cloth the waitress shrugged and said that was from the previous diners. No attempt to rectify this. The afternoon tea itself was no better, the sandwiches hardly had any filling and the bread was starting to curl and go hard. The train window was smeary and needed a clean. There should have been someone checking the tables were in order prior to customers boarding and they need to find another supplier for the afternoon tea. If it hadn't been a birthday treat for my husband I would have left as soon as I saw the disgusting table. The positive was the train journey, we had access to ride the train all day and did the journey to Totnes and sat in Edwardian carriage which was excellent . The staff were all lovely. I would do the train journey again but go somewhere else for afternoon tea!Thank you for your feedback. It is obvious that something went wrong on the day of your visit and we unreservedly apologise for any shortfalls in the afternoon tea you experienced. We use external caterers for our dining services and they pride themselves on creating fresh dishes for their menus. With the weather being as hot as it was they made the sandwiches just prior to departure, but it is apparent that this did not ensure the quality expected. There is no excusing the condition of the table cloth and crockery and we will be taking this up with them. We will feed back your experiences to the caterer to understand how issues can be improved for future services. We're really pleased you enjoyed the train journey and we hope we can welcome you back to experience what else the South Devon Railway has to offer.Written 23 July 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 July 2023
- G_O_C479Swansea, United Kingdom840 contributionsGreat dog friendly day outLovely railway we haven’t visited for over 10 years and as we were staying in Staverton for the weekend it gave us an ideal activity. Excellent locomotives and carriages and Staverton station itself has to be a contender for the most picturesque preserved railway station in the UK. Only one negative - the cafe at Buckfastleigh. It’s very inefficiently run with half a dozen teenage girls moving at snails pace and pulling silly faces at eachother rather than working and they only seem to be able to deal with one order at a time very very slowly, literally paint dries faster than they make a cup of coffee. I advise anyone alighting the train at Buckfastleigh who wants refreshments to go there immediately or you really are at risk of missing the train back to totnes an hour later - I got served faster than I would but still interminably slowly because people in front of me in the que gave up and left and surely this is lost revenue so it does need looking at.Thanks for leaving us a review! Staverton is a really pretty station and is a highlight of any visit to us. We're glad you were able to spend some time there and soak up the atmosphere. The cafe at Buckfastleigh station has been leased out since 2021. We're really sorry that your experience didn't meet expectations; we will certainly feed that information back to the operators so they can make improvements.Written 20 August 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 August 2023

The entertaiment was second to none everyone was fully invested in the characters and very interactive with the children. However Santa the star of the show was a little rushed and walked away whilst the children were still talking to him. Probably less than a minute to talk to four children. Didn't really seem interested in what they had to say just wanted to dish out the bells and go. Total contrast to last years Santa who was amazing.

Awesome! The children were totally mesmerised by the whole thing, the staff/actors were brilliant and played their parts so well. Totally worth the money. Gift shop was expensive but they always are at these sort of things.

After going on line and buying the wrong way around after speaking to the company this was sorted promptly and efficiently.
My grandson who’s deaf, loved the train, he’s train mad, the conductor on the train made his day by giving him a ticket and punched it for him this made his day,
The ombience of the whole experience was magical
This will not be the last time I take my family on this train,
Well done everyone it was just wonderful.
The staff are wonderful and you can see it’s their passion

The staff in the Totnes booking office and those on the train made our day trip one to remember. It was my wife's birthday and Prosecco was available and the buffet attendant on realising our special day suggested a candle and a cake - the perfect touch! The Guard then noting the celebration added a special train announcement which was really sweet. Great trip, lovely views and engaging volunteers.
We walked to Buckfast Abbey for an interesting visit and good lunch.

Lovely experience on old-fashioned steam train. One couple complained about the food (£50 a head) but missed the point that it's a charitable association, mostly staffed by volunteers, and not comparable to a pub. Food was OK (hence 4 stars rather than 5) but it's mostly about the experience. And it was wonderful. And the staff were really good. Polite, attentive, couldn't do enough for you. Very impressed. An enjoyable way to spend an afternoon for a couple of hours. 100% recommend.

One of the friendliest heritage railways with lots to do and see at each station, with museum, model railway, bookshop and plenty of heritage material to see. Buffet car on board and seems to have a year round service which can be unusual - but please check I’m right before you set off - with the low season being all steam pulled. Nice run by the River Dart with Totnes Riverside adjacent to the main line station. In a quirk of history Dr Beeching closed the line (beyond Buckfastleigh to Ashburton) and then reopened the heritage railway

Overall was a great day!

My husband and I are going on holiday, we've have been to Devon quite a few times now
We base ourselves in Torquay, we are OAP's but we go all over, our age does not keep us in once place.
We have made our way to Paignton to get on the stream train and we're heading of to Dartmouth to go and visit the River dart, we love this place. When you get off the train at Dartmouth, you have to get the little boat that crosses you over the river dart to get off. Nice shops to see, lovely park and there's pubs as well
We don't drive, so its nice to get on either train or there local buses.
Another place we went to is Totnes, Babbacombe, the other bay we went to was Oddicombe . Agatha Christie summer house as well is very interesting and this looks out over the River dart in the kingswear area
There's also Brixham - similar to Whitby. Another nice place to go and look at the thatched cottages, cafe and odd shop, horses. The place is called Cockington Village (chocolate box village) it's beautiful.
Torquay has a lovely harbour and plenty of pubs, fish and chips, ice cream. Every different bays on Devon are beautiful, there's also walking routes you can do
JUST ENJOY

It's a short step up to the carriages from the platform and there's a small gap from the platform edge to the train so no real problem. I think they have a ramp for people who are not so good on their feet

Could anyone tell me how far away the attractions are from the train line please?
I am limited in the distance I can walk so I'm looking for something that keeps long walks to a minimum.
Thank you

As above really. I too cannot walk distance at the moment but other than the footbridge at Buckfastleigh which you can avoid by walking just a short distance along their road everything is level and short walking distance. At Totnes end if you get off the train on arrival at the rear then its only a few hundred yards to the crossing, Cafe and rare breeds farm.
