About
Proper Job is one of the UK’s first community reuse centres nestled on the northeast edge of Dartmoor in Devon. We are a Charity that aims to keep reusable items away from landfills, by putting them on sale in an Aladdin’s cave of pre-loved treasures. Everything from baths, crockery and clothes to garden furniture and building materials can be bought by you at a fraction of their original cost, meaning you not only save money but also go some way to leading a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. We are fiercely committed to principles of sustainability and educating to conserve resources. Our mission is to develop more UK initiatives around conservation, waste management and recycling of the earth’s resources. You are invited to join training sessions and skill sharing workshops. We offer those to promote the benefits of reusing, recycling and reducing in this modern age.

After reading the reviews I decided I’d like to take a look here, after travelling a fairly long way and going down country lanes I was thinking maybe I’d made a mistake as it’s very rural. It has a nice big car park, upon walking into the centre there was a lot of iron garden implements nicely rusted, a large selection of tiles for the floor and wall, none of which was priced, most of the shops are set in metal containers with numerous doors none of which were signed as to the entrance, and with no one around to ask. Some looked like a office area. The clothing sales area was vey damp and coldit was the same with the books area. If you want to purchase a bathroom vanity set they had a lot.
On the whole the whole place felt unloved, nothing like the photos shown on here, with local recycling centres now doing this,I feel it needs to up its game due to the location.

Dear Alyson, I am sorry you were not impressed with your experience at Proper Job. The abillty to navigate the country lanes is often a good judge of character. We are a small community led charity and are proud of our dedicated staff and volunteers. You compare the work we do in your review to council run facilities that are heavily funded by local councils, we are not. Each year we have over 50 volunteers, we run events and workshops for over 1000 educational beneficaries and facilitate the reuse of over 50,000 item. The project is truly loved by our rural community even if it is a little but rough around the edges. Kind Regards Alison Sallis - General Manager

We had a drive down to Proper Job as we were in the area and what a great place to have a mooch! Both myself and my partner enjoyed walking round the different rooms, we walked away with an amazing ice cube lamp and some lovely clothing bits!

A superb place to visit. I particularly love books, music and films and it has an excellent book shop and a marvellous selection of music CDs and DVDs and other media. An astounding selection. There were super clothes sections all beautifully laid out and displayed as well as a fascinating tool shed, furniture shop and pets section as well as household. I was actually willing it to rain so I could so spend hours in the place. The prices were excellent. The staff were lovely. A first rate place which I highly recommend.

Whenever we visit Chagford we look forward to browsing at Proper Job. It's the best cluster ever of charity shops bursting at the seams with finds. There is a huge amount of stock, sorted into different departments and buildings. We invariably buy stuff, but are also reminded of things we grew up with that we haven't seen for years.

I Can easily spend hours at proper job digging for treasure. It has been excellently organised into sections, ranging from books, music, kitchen wear to fabulous outfits and much more. The friendly staff are on hand to help and it’s a great place to pick up a bargain. I found proper job extremely useful when I was making afternoon tea for a wedding and needed cake display items and vintage style table wear all at a really great price! Also pop to uptown, proper jobs shop in Chagford for a more refined selection of items including fabulous pieces from local designers and artists.

This is a very good privately run recycling centre. There is a huge selection and variety of stock. The missing star relates to customer service, although most staff were very friendly, one member of staff (female) displayed a very noticable lack of interest in repeat custom. We had spent around £40 over 2 days on items, yet when the opportunity came to offer us an item cheaply that had been donated that they were not allowed to sell anyway, that oppotune moment was missed. These moments really matter and should not be brushed off, they can either make a customer feel really valued and wanting to return or indifferent, the member of staff was more interested in researching the shop price online and getting top dollar for something that in fact is illegal for them to sell, than she was in us being returning customers and going away really happy by for example just giving us the item/s and asking for a donation in the pot etc. Why quibble over a few pounds when the fact is that if we had felt valued in that moment and made smile, feel like we had been gifted with a little something that they cannot legally sell anyway, we would have felt like being very loyal to the CIO. Attitude, that is what gets your customers returning in the wet, cold days of winter, think about it young lady, make an effort to raise a smile and give that customer a boost. On the other hand the men working there were very helpful, one in particular (the thicker set gentleman with a northern accent) is a credit to the business and a joy to be served by. The previous day he took great pleasure in my daughter being delighted with the toys she had found, that's the approach that sticks in your mind, this attitude needs to be taught to all members of staff because (as the young lady stated) businesses like theirs struggle at certain times of the year and have been at risk of closing. One would think if that were the case that they would be eager to please. The variety of stock is fabulous however, it's a little yard business that has so much variety that you could almost not leave the town for things like lighting, plumbing parts, clothes, crockery. That aspect - it's a fun and enjoyable place to visit with the children to all be able to find something to go away with! We will visit again, as we are local.

I am sorry you must have caught me on a bad day. It is sometimes hard to get happy balance between making money for the charity and keeping our valued customers happy. We have to think on the spot when items are donated and someone wants to buy them straight away. I wasn't really happy to sell cigarettes and wanted to make sure that I discussed the donation with the rest of the board of Trustees before we did anything with them. Sorry you got caught up in the dialogue between staff whilst we were deciding what to do. We should not have done that in front of you. Thank you for your lovely review I will make sure I pass your comments on to Andy, and we hope to see you again soon. Best Wishes Alison Sallis

Proper Job is such a fascinating treasure trove of everything pre-loved. With such a wide range- from clothing and books, paint and tools, furniture and bric-a-brac to name a few! The stock is varied and ever changing, so regular visits are a must for me! The drop off facility is a fantastic resource for the community, and I get great pleasure knowing that someone else is breathing new life into my belongings.
The Uptown shop in Chagford Square is displayed beautifully and a real destination for anyone who loves vintage and second-hand. With lots of well known and quality fashion labels, there is many a bargain to be had!

I'm lucky that I live in Chagford and can visit regularly - I can never resist checking out the amazing selection of books and have found some real gems there. The clothes are so well displayed too and you get some real bargains - so much to see and its the first place to visit if I need anything for the house - I always check out Proper Job first and have so often found exactly what I need!

Proper Job - and it's uptown posher sister, "Uptown" - is part of the fabric of my life - I will always find things here that could take months to source around Exeter or London or online, be it books, clothing, textiles, homewares, furniture........it is a treasure trove -and so well-organised - Alison and the wonderful team contribute so much to the community in other ways too, with useful workshops and events...and when I have "stuff" I wish to pass on, I know that Proper Job will find a good home for it.
It is a "MUST" when we have visitors.
