About
Proper Job is one of the UK’s first community reuse centres nestled on the northeast edge of Dartmoor in Devon. We are a Charity that aims to keep reusable items away from landfills, by putting them on sale in an Aladdin’s cave of pre-loved treasures. Everything from baths, crockery and clothes to garden furniture and building materials can be bought by you at a fraction of their original cost, meaning you not only save money but also go some way to leading a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. We are fiercely committed to principles of sustainability and educating to conserve resources. Our mission is to develop more UK initiatives around conservation, waste management and recycling of the earth’s resources. You are invited to join training sessions and skill sharing workshops. We offer those to promote the benefits of reusing, recycling and reducing in this modern age.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A superb place to visit. I particularly love books, music and films and it has an excellent book shop and a marvellous selection of music CDs and DVDs and other media. An astounding selection. There were super clothes sections all beautifully laid out and displayed as well as a fascinating tool shed, furniture shop and pets section as well as household. I was actually willing it to rain so I could so spend hours in the place. The prices were excellent. The staff were lovely. A first rate place which I highly recommend.

Proper Job is a fantastic resource for Chagford. The vintage and second-hand clothes have given us the raw material for many a fancy dress party. The books and music depts are a real treasure trove. It's a great place to drop off surplus belongings as you know it will be put to good use by someone. It reminds me of the Emmaus you get in French towns. If you like to browse vintage and second-hand shops this is a must.

Whenever we visit Chagford we look forward to browsing at Proper Job. It's the best cluster ever of charity shops bursting at the seams with finds. There is a huge amount of stock, sorted into different departments and buildings. We invariably buy stuff, but are also reminded of things we grew up with that we haven't seen for years.

After reading the reviews I decided I’d like to take a look here, after travelling a fairly long way and going down country lanes I was thinking maybe I’d made a mistake as it’s very rural. It has a nice big car park, upon walking into the centre there was a lot of iron garden implements nicely rusted, a large selection of tiles for the floor and wall, none of which was priced, most of the shops are set in metal containers with numerous doors none of which were signed as to the entrance, and with no one around to ask. Some looked like a office area. The clothing sales area was vey damp and coldit was the same with the books area. If you want to purchase a bathroom vanity set they had a lot.
On the whole the whole place felt unloved, nothing like the photos shown on here, with local recycling centres now doing this,I feel it needs to up its game due to the location.

Dear Alyson,
I am sorry you were not impressed with your experience at Proper Job. The abillty to navigate the country lanes is often a good judge of character. We are a small community led charity and are proud of our dedicated staff and volunteers. You compare the work we do in your review to council run facilities that are heavily funded by local councils, we are not. Each year we have over 50 volunteers, we run events and workshops for over 1000 educational beneficaries and facilitate the reuse of over 50,000 item. The project is truly loved by our rural community even if it is a little but rough around the edges.
Kind Regards

Proper Job is such a fascinating treasure trove of everything pre-loved. With such a wide range- from clothing and books, paint and tools, furniture and bric-a-brac to name a few! The stock is varied and ever changing, so regular visits are a must for me! The drop off facility is a fantastic resource for the community, and I get great pleasure knowing that someone else is breathing new life into my belongings.
The Uptown shop in Chagford Square is displayed beautifully and a real destination for anyone who loves vintage and second-hand. With lots of well known and quality fashion labels, there is many a bargain to be had!

I'm lucky that I live in Chagford and can visit regularly - I can never resist checking out the amazing selection of books and have found some real gems there. The clothes are so well displayed too and you get some real bargains - so much to see and its the first place to visit if I need anything for the house - I always check out Proper Job first and have so often found exactly what I need!

Proper Job - and it's uptown posher sister, "Uptown" - is part of the fabric of my life - I will always find things here that could take months to source around Exeter or London or online, be it books, clothing, textiles, homewares, furniture........it is a treasure trove -and so well-organised - Alison and the wonderful team contribute so much to the community in other ways too, with useful workshops and events...and when I have "stuff" I wish to pass on, I know that Proper Job will find a good home for it.
It is a "MUST" when we have visitors.

Fantastic hidden gem on the outskirts of Chagford. Nick was so helpful, explaining the ethos of Proper Job and what a incredible resource it has become for the surrounding community. Anything can be found from books and furniture to clothes and antiques. Plenty parking and easy to find. Its becoming weekly trip for us.

Tucked away on Dartmoore this place is truly an enjoyable treasure hunt and a great place to bring your unwanted things.
The staff are always helpful and all the money they make go back into the community. A great way to make the most of waste in a chuck out society.
Nice work guys 😊

We had a drive down to Proper Job as we were in the area and what a great place to have a mooch! Both myself and my partner enjoyed walking round the different rooms, we walked away with an amazing ice cube lamp and some lovely clothing bits!
