About
The remains of the largest castle in Devon, in a stunning setting on a wooded spur above the rushing River Okement. Begun soon after the Norman Conquest as a motte and bailey castle with a stone keep, it was converted into a sumptuous residence in the 14th century by Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon, much of whose work survives. After the last Courtenay owner fell foul of Henry VIII in 1538, it declined into an allegedly haunted ruin.

- cuddlymom25 contributionsA good visitshame we couldn't get into the site as it was closed for the winter. It was interesting looking at it from outside the gates. couldn't fathom why they would build the castle in the bottom of the valley by the water and not on the hill top! There was parking but beware of the numerous large potholes. Road access is tight as it is down a very narrow lane.Visited January 2023Written 24 January 2023

An interesting layout and easy to explore. there are audio guides but I would recommend buying the book guide as well -only £3.50.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 June 2023
- GrizzlytwigPoole, United Kingdom26 contributionsLoved this castle and areaThe castle is on a hill just on the edge of Okehampton. It's English Heritage & there's just 1 volunteer on site. He was very knowledgeable about the history & had some interesting stories to tell. There is a small shop that does drinks & a few snacks (run by the same person). You can walk all over the ruins & it's a pretty setting with wild flowers on the banks. There are lots of magpies living in ruined houses that are part of the site.Visited October 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 September 2023

Stunning and fascinating. The guides were full of knowledge and everything was well preserved with informative signs and displays dotted around. Very very interesting and well worth the couple of hours.

The remains of Okehampton castle sit on an impressive man made Motte, this castle is the largest castle ruins in Devon. There are some really nice walking trails around the castle in the woods.

I can only give this a 3 star review, it wasn't helped by the awful weather on the day of my visit. Stopped by, on my way to what turned out to be one of the worst holidays, (in Cornwall), I've ever had!
Basically, the castle is a ruin as are most castles in the UK, (thanks Oliver). That said, it has a good situation and stands atop a hill. Perfect for photography, but to be honest there isn't that much for the average visitor to see. That coupled with, what I thought was a bit of an excessive admission price, (luckily I'm a EH member), I don;t think it's good value. Perhaps on a nicer day, I may have been swayed a bit more to the positive.
Staff - couldn't have been better. Very helpful and welcoming.
Car park - forget it. Although signed as for castle visitors, it's filled up by selfish locals, (see photos), so we had to pay to park in town and walk up to the castle.

Lovely morning spent here yesterday. Tom in the booth was ever so helpful and friendly. I would recommend using the free audio guides as they really helped to visualise the castle’s past. It also gave some focus when wandering around.
After the castle, we went on a beautiful walk around the woodlands. I should imagine it could get slippery on wet days, so make sure you have appropriate footwear on if you do decide to go on the walk.
I notice some people in previous posts mention the steps. Yes they are steep in places but this site is hundreds of years old. They can’t just be replaced!
All in all a very pleasant morning.

Really lovely time spent here today. The guy at the desk was so friendly, told us about a lovely woodland walk which was beautiful as a hot day it was a pleasant relief to get out the sun with our doggy. Loved the castle and the views were breathtaking.
