Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Beautiful spot, lots of visitors.
A previous review mentioned 'Leeches' as a reason not to swim..!
I saw absolutely no sign of any leeches(!), however the grass around the quarry had plenty of normal black slugs (finger length) going about their own business, as it was a wet day - I can only imagine that the previous reviewer has mis-identified these as leeches! None in the water.
It was lovely to swim in, not overly cold as doesn't get that deep (only a few feet out of your depth), but be cautious of bashing your legs against under water rocks, of which there are plenty!

A relatively easy walk from Princetown of about 4.5 miles round trip. The path itself is along the old railway track so a reasonable surface, although there were some rough bits near the start (especially if you are travelling by wheelchair or mobility scooter).
The quarry itself is quite magnificent, although when I visited there was rather a lot of water around (not helped by the heavy downpour on the outbound journey!). The "man made cliffs" look as if they are just waiting for the workers to come back from lunch. Although the ruins of the buildings offer a far more bleak view.

One of the largest abandoned quarries on the moor.
Foggintor quarry is where the granite for Nelsons column was cut.
The quarry itself can be reached by either following the old rail bed from the Dartmoor brewery and taking the uphill right fork where the track splits or the track from Rundlestone. To enter the quarry I would advise using the higher entrance avoiding the boggy outflow lower cut except in very dry weather. Please note that there are hazardous 100ft drops and rough terrain, Tell someone where you are going and be aware that many mobile phones will not be operable due to the location.
Absolutely spectacular for walkers and photographers, the huge symetrical hill beside the quarry is actually the spoil heap and is an industrial wonder in its own right.

The ruined walls of the old quarry masters house can be seen with the remains of the sunken kitchen garden. The rock filled reinforced arch beneath the house was originally used as the dynamite store for blasting explosives.

Literally magical to swim in freezing water inside a tor. Stunningly beautiful in whatever light and weather.
Can be slightly tricky to climb down into the quarry at the first bit as you arrive as there is a slight overhang - recommend taking off your bag otherwise the risk is that you fall over backwards. The walk there is easy though.
Also if swimming there are a lot of boulders in the water, it is deepest towards the cliff edge.

Wonderful walk to here whether from Princetown or along the tavistock rd.
The views along the way are great. Lots to explore once there too. You can imagine how busy the quarry was and the people that lived there

A friend took me here without telling me & it was breathtaking. You walk down a very unassuming dirt track. It’s all just shrubs. No colour & just a few small bushes. About a 30-40 min walk & turn a corner & there is this beautiful oasis. It’s just stunning & well worth the walk. Lots of ruins to explore. Well worth a visit.

I recently went here with 9 family members, from 6 to 60 years old. We all thought it was a beautiful spot & stopped for lunch by the water. You need to be careful as it’s very rocky, & a bit of clambering over rocks is required but we all managed it. No photo will do this place justice, but it was well worth the walk there (we walked from Princetown tourist information centre car park). Stunning!

The Quarry is found at the end of a long reasonably level ex.railway track with parking for a few cars at the roadside layby. Entry isn't easy and does require care. This extensive quarry is very large with a single, fairly convoluted path leading around a central pool of fairly shallow water. Very beautiful. The walls of the quarry are unfenced shear granite cliffs, sometimes used by the Military and others for abseiling training, but caution is needed when viewing from the top.

It was a blustery day with sunny periods and passing showers but when it rained it was almost horizontal. Setting off from Princetown you pass a row of houses along the old rail track. This is where the station originally stood. Its good easy walking on the old track bed as it sweeps out onto the moor with sweeping views. Unlike some I didn't deviate from the old railway track and followed it round. At one point the line seems to be doubled or perhaps an old siding. There is the outline of a building. The site of the old King Tor Halt, one of a few halts that once existed on the line. Here you can branch off into the quarry. On reaching the quarry there are the remains of some old buildings. And the quarry its self is filled with water, quite clear. You almost expect a hand to raise up out of the water with a sword in its hand. Worth a visit as its atmospheric and a break from walking but beware if you decide to climb as there are some steep drops. We were lucky with the weather when got to the quarry, bright blue sky reflected in the water. We then cut across country towards a farm and joined a farm track. Making our way up to the television mast at North Hessary Tor, we then followed a wall down to the old churchyard in Princetown. The whole walk took about two and a half hours, including a short stop for a flask of soup. There are numerous places to eat and drink in Princetown and I have a review of Fox Tor Cafe on here.
