Start point lighthouse….well worth a visit.
5/5 excellent. This Wednesday while holidaying in Devon my wife and I decided to visit the Start Point lighthouse. After parking at the car park, which is very reasonably priced, I might add, we had a very pleasant walk down to the lighthouse. Luckily for us a tour was about to start. We hadn’t booked, which apparently you don’t need to, and so decided to partake of the tour. We were so glad we did. It lasted for about an hour and one of the two tour guides took us both around the outside and then right up to the top of the lighthouse. The views were stunning as it was a sunny and clear day. On the numerous different levels our guide gave us a tremendous amount of information. She elicited her knowledge in a clear and amusing way. She was obviously very keen on the lighthouse and wanted to tell us all about it. She was able to retell us many other stories regarding the history of the South Hams, smugglers, pirates and other facts of local interest. £8.50 was a very reasonable price to pay for such an enjoyable and highly recommended time. Keep up the good work, girls, much appreciated.

Fabulous 2 hours on a sunny day
Superb coastal views of distant seaside villages, beaches and a visit from massive tuna fish playing in the calm waters. The lady leading the guided tour filled 45 minutes with most interesting historical and local news leaving us wanting to learn more, gave us plenty of time to answer all questions and to recover breath when going up the many steps to the top ofthe lighthouse. Thoroughly recommend the tour even when weather is less idyllic (with suitable waterproofs)

    Family visit
We were so impressed with our visit to Start Point. We were a family returning with our elderly father for a nostalgic trip, having visited 20 years previously. Our tour guide , Mary, was outstanding: patient , friendly and informative. We couldn't recommend this visit more highly. The views are breath taking and the history of the light house fascinating. Thank you. It is a very special and unique place.

A great walk along the top of the cliffs to see the lighthouse. A proper lighthouse all white and big and round!! Prepare for the walk back if you are a little older (Like me) it is a very long uphill walk but then you will have realised that after the very long downhill walk to the lighthouse!! Great views the whole route,

Excellent day out for a picnic. The most friendly staff running the car park. It was exceptional value to park with a clean, well maintained portaloo and a little coffee facility.

The most excellent views of Start Bay as you walk to the lighthouse.. on arrival you are greeted by friendly and well informed staff. Whilst there, looking out to sea you might spot a Seal, Cormorants ,we spotted a Kestral and currently Tuna are jumping up out of the water. Wow!! I highly recommend a visit!

We are a family of four, who visited during half term. The tour was ok, but what was absolutely shocking and immensely disappointing was the racist comment about Irish people being made during the tour by the tour leader. She joked saying she isn’t supposed to say it, but oops I’ve said it now. My daughters aged 6 and 8 were baffled as they have never experienced this in London and my husband and I were deeply saddened to hear such derogatory comments being spoken so openly. As a family with Irish heritage we were obviously offended, but would have been equally upset hearing any form of racism. How has this lady been recently given this job? Please could someone inform this employee that being racist in 2023 is ‘backward’ - the Irish, on the other hand, are certainly not!!! A very disappointing experience and therefore visit indeed!

After a rather exciting trip to find the lighthouse, down some roads that weren't for the faint hearted, thanks to a Sat Nav confusion, arrived in the car park for the Start Point Lighthouse.

The Car Park charges were fair for the time spent at the Lighthouse, there are plenty of walks with spectacular views to be had, as well as seeing the Lighthouse.

The lighthouse is approximately a mile from the car park, down a wide, well maintained roadway, there are lots of spectacular views toward Slapton Sands

I was lucky enough to visit on a day when the lighthouse was open for tours, the 2 lovely ladies very kindly helped me out with the loan of some plimsolls, after the sole came off my shoes climbing up on the rocks above the lighthouse

The tour was very informative and covers both the history of Trinity House as well as the Start Point Lighthouse itself.

Well worth a visit.
