Great Day Out For Younger Children
Myself and my 5 year old have been here on multiple occasions and it's always been an excellent day out for him (and me!) Initially the site will look small, however its biggest selling points are the ride on trains. Unlike other sites the rides on these are unlimited and run every 20-30 minutes through the day. On the larger train the driver will offer a rider the chance to wave the flag to start the train which is a nice touch. There is a stop at a picnic area with a small park for children under 6, bigger kids will probably enjoy launching sticks/stones into the nearby river. The smaller train takes you through a funny gnome village again stopping at the picnic area. There's a number of small play areas of various degrees of challenge around the place as well as a reasonably sized soft play area and a free to play mini golf area. The carriages in the middle are a secret weapon for bad weather or parents wanting kids to burn energy off, there are a number of exhibits where buttons can be pressed to interact, and the other side houses two large layouts of wooden cars/trains, a well stocked sandpit and a ball pit. You can also find a small museum and a couple of video game units to play. Outside there is another interactive model village and some pay to ride on cars, bumper dodgem cars and a Toby train. Stock up on 50p and £1 coins as you Child will want to do it a few times! The cafe is a little steep price wise but given the number of free to use things it's not an unreasonable amount. Lastly the staff are wonderfully polite, knowledgeable and incredibly caring for those children with additional needs. A recent visit was helped by one of the staff allowing my autistic son to enter in a quieter area without making a fuss. I would highly recommend this place if you have children under the age of 10 or if they have an interest in trains!
Thank you for your detailed 5 star review. We are all delighted and it's really rewarding to read your comments which recognise the hard work we put in to our attraction. We look forward to welcoming you and your son again soon!

    Always a wonderful visit
Had a brilliant day here with family today. Weather decidedly iffy so the perfect place to be as you're never far from shelter. Lots and lots of smaller individual things to do. Very good value given that we paid £38 to be entertained constantly for about 6 hours. Nice mixture of genuine rail heritage and activities for children. Staff very friendly. Through my own stupidity, I managed to lose my car keys whilst here and staff were infinitely patient and helpful in retrieving them. We always love coming here and will be back 👍
Thank you for your lovely review and we are delighted to welcome you back again. Thanks also for your kind comments about our staff and I am pleased they were able to help you in finding your keys!

    Fun filled visit
We visited the attraction with our two grandsons, ages 3 and 6 and stayed for five fun filled hours, having to prise them away. We thoroughly enjoyed the two sorts of train rides and seeing the gnomes. Our grandsons loved the soft play centre, outdoor play areas, model train set and the wooden toy train track area. The crazy golf and model village were great too. Welcoming staff, lovely inexpensive cafe, very clean throughout. We will return, definitely a success!

    Very entertaining family afternoon out
Absolutely splendid experience for the whole family. We spent 3 hours there and were thoroughly entertained the whole time. Children's ages ranged from 2 - 8 and they had a great time. Adults enjoyed it too. Very good value for money and had both outside and inside facilities to keep the children occupied. They experienced 3 separate train rides, the bigger train, the smaller train and the little tram that they could drive themselves. So much to see and do - thoroughly recommend. Staff were friendly and helpful and even the station cat allowed himself to be stroked by eager little hands!

    Wonderful Halloween visit
This is an amazing place. Visited yesterday with my family, including my 2 grandsons aged 3 & 5. They absolutely loved it and so did we. There is a Halloween event going on at the moment and after spotting all the pumpkins dotted around the site the children are given a lovely goodie bag. We arrived at opening time and left when it closed. There's so much to see and do. It's great value, staff are so lovely, everything works as there are lots of buttons to push and the food is delicious and very reasonably priced (so many gorgeous cakes to choose from), although you can bring your own picnic. The toilets were immaculate and there's lots of really nice clean seating around. I really can't fault it. Memories are made here, we played crazy golf with our grandsons, rode trains, played in the play carriages and talked and laughed whilst walking around the amazing model villages. There's even a soft play area. The owners have obviously put a great deal of thought and love into this place and it shines through. Thank you, we'll definitely be back next year.

We had been to the railway centre many times before and always had a great time; as the weather was looking ok we decided on a visit. We picked up a discount card at our local supermarket that offered £1 off per person in our party, but even so i think the entry fee is very reasonable - we arrived at 10.30am and didn't leave until 4.30pm. There is a car park next to the site but also down a small lane under the bridge. Staff were friendly. In the morning there seemed to be a steady stream of people coming in but the site didn't feel crowded at all. We rode both trains a couple of times and also had some food in the picnic area; look out for the ducks there. My children have always loved the play carriages, we spent hours in them. My suggestion for here though would be some more comfortable seating for adults, perhaps a few chairs in the area where the party
room use to be. We had a great time and will no doubt visit again in the near future.

The Devon Railway Centre is a really nice little place to take young kids. A converted old railway yard and station makes for a perfect miniature railway and train ride site. There was indoor soft play, crazy golf, play areas and beautiful old trains and carriages to see. We spent about 2 hours there and it was excellent fun.

We paid £40 for a family ticket which we thought to be a little bit expensive given that there was only a few hours worth of things to do. But when that price includes unlimited train rides and free crazy golf it isn’t too bad.

The carriages could do with a new coat of paint and that rail yard was a bit full of rusty rails but other than that very clean and tidy.

Thank you for your review and 4 stars. Great to read you had fun with us. Our carriages are receiving their annual paint at the moment and I appreciate they are in the midst of being improved but this will be completed when time allows.

We visited here a couple of years ago and were hoping to return this summer.
Booking tickets online was easy, payment taken on arrival. Plenty of car parking.

We took a packed lunch and caught the small train to the station by the park and bridge; it was lovely to have lunch in such a peaceful area. Look out for lots of wildlife in this part, including ducks and rabbits. We purchased ice creams from the cafe, good value considering its an attraction. There are plenty of picnic tables around the site.

The site was very tidy and clean; toilets also very clean. The crazy golf was included in the admission fee, great condition course with some difficult holes! There were some bits that cost extra; the orbiters and children cars were 50p a ride, the drive a train was £1.

We were there for about 6 hours, we thought the admission price was very reasonable. Our children loved the soft play area, the model railways and the sand and play trains in the carriages. I was also interested in the history of the site, I liked reading the various information boards in and around the museum carriage. Some information about the carriages would be good though; would they had gone through the station when they were in use?

When we were eating lunch by the bridge we were saying if one day one of the miniature train lines could go over the bridge; not sure if that would ever be possible in the future?

We had such a great time that we decided to buy an annual ticket! I highly recommend a visit.

Wow! Thank you for your 5 star review. We ae so pleased you had another great time with us. Thank you for your ideas about the standard gauge coaches. They were not from this line and have come from other parts of the UK. I agree it would be good to have some information on them and we will definitely look into this. Unfortunately it would not be possible to extend our miniature train ride over the bridge as the land the other side is privately owned. Thanks for the thought though. It would be lovely to see you again in the future.

Its not a bad place to visit but definitely not worth the admission price. The model trains were great with buttons along the way but very run down and old smelling carriages. The smell of the tea room gave us a headache and certainly put us off of eating here, everyone seem to be leaving to eat down the road. The golf was great but could do with a bit of love. If gnomes are your thing, this is the place for you but not so much a three year old. He loved the train rides but they were very slow and not scenic. Again, unless you love a gnome its not that thrilling. Great parks and soft play was awesome. We were not impressed by the extra 20p, 50p and £1 here and there for the extra cars/dodgems/train after paying £31 to get in for a family of 3. My only advice would be to lower the admission because it is not a ‘day out’ and more of a couple of hours at max. For about £6 an adult it would have been value for money but not £31. We went in at 10:45 and left by 1pm.

Thank you for your review but I am a little puzzled by your comments. I am surprised you consider us "not worth the admission price" yet you said it was lovely! We consider our admission prices to be very good value for money and many of our Trip Advisor reviews support this. I am not sure what you mean about the smells both in the model railway carriages and tea rooms since none of our visitors have mentioned this before. There is much more to our attraction than the Gnomes which are simply a bit of fun on one of our train rides. I am not sure what you expected to see on your scenic train ride but there is a lovely view of the River Exe alongside us on your train rides and the hundreds of trees around us make for a pretty view from either train. You do not have to spend on any of the extras when you are visiting and many visitors say there is no need to do so as there are plenty of things to keep little ones busy. You don't mention our model village so I can only assume you didn't visit this which is a shame as this is interactive and something I'm sure you and your little one would enjoy. I appreciate we cant please everyone but I can assure you this attraction is loved by us and a great deal of time and care goes into maintaining it for all our visitors to enjoy.

With a train mad 3 year old, we've visited a fair few train themed attractions over the past year, and this took the best elements of all of them to make for an enjoyable few hours.

Our son loved riding on the 7inch and narrow guage trains, pressing the buttons on the model railways, and looking at the model villages and gnomes. Both the villages and gnomes have lots of detail to admire as an adult.
He also enjoyed taking his one year old sister for a short ride on the self operated train for one pound extra, and the 50p a go self drive cars.

The attraction also had a soft play, which was small compared to some of the megastructures at play centres, but still a good size for younger kids and not at all bad given the space that the attraction had to fit this in to.
There was also a small outdoor play frame near the entrance, and another small frame if you got off the train at the short distance to the far end of the grounds; and a few holes of mini golf.
The play carriages had three brio style wooden sets to play with, as well as a sand pit.

The cafe served pretty simple but perfectly good food at prices which seemed reasonable, and better value than some other attractions we visited during the week.

This was a fun way to spend a couple of hours with my two young children, and I recommend it.
I can see it being easily enjoyable for those up to 5 at least; after this age it would depend on their interest in trains, as it isn't a huge attraction.

Unlike Pecorama it has opened! Loads of covid changes made in response to the situation which are understandable but also feel a bit over the top. We had fun overall with young children and used our full time slot, riding and seeing everything. Would recommend as a half day out — however:

We went in the afternoon for our 3 hour slot which reduced to 2hours 20 once we had queued you pay and get in, and we felt you need a full 3+ hours inside. The trains rides are running with social distancing very limited capacity meaning much waiting for trips to run and then get a chance to ride. Requiring the wearing of masks on the train could resolve this when busy especially as there is no cleaning of “toby” between users.

The model railway carriages are very hot can you open some windows, the layouts are quite old and tired looking the scenery could do with refreshing plus the track cleaned as they are running a bit stop start. Also they are positioned rather high off the ground for children, yes steps are available but a bit more thought when they were installed about visitors would be good also completely inaccessible to those with disabilities.

The history carriage is rather empty and would be better with more details!

The model village and funfair is really well done and thought through, lots of nice touches and things to see there. The tram had derailed but hopefully that’s been rectified now.

The gnome woodland was also lots of fun with many, many cameos to see kids loved this bit.

Sadly when we visited all the narrow gauge steam engines were hidden away, it’s fine not to be using them but would be nice to be able to at least see them in a siding like Sir Tom for example.

Gripes aside (and does read like a long list!) we had a good fun day out and enjoyed the experience hence the 4 stars and a few tweaks to the covid response could get it up to 5.

Thank you for your review and I am pleased you enjoyed your time with us. I would, however like to respond to some of the points you have raised. I appreciate the model railway coaches can be warm in hot weather, but we do open windows and have air coolers in operation. The model layouts are designed so everyone can view them easily. If they had been built at child's eye level, then adults wouldn't be able to see the details easily. We provide stools for our younger visitors. Many of our layouts have won modelling awards and are far from neglected as you suggest. We operate our train rides with social distancing taking priority over wearing face masks. We do have comprehensive safety measures in place which we feel is of paramount importance at this time. Our drivers are very conscious of queue times and are working as hard as possible to keep this to a minimum. All our staff are trying their best in these challenging times and I appreciate their efforts. I hope they helped to make your day enjoyable too.

We stumbled across this place having picked up a an attraction brochure. We werent sure if both our children would enjoy this, my son being a train mad 7 year old , and daughter 11, not so much. However, we were wrong.
We loved both train rides, and was pleased that you can ride them as often as you like at no extra cost. The model railways built inside old carriages are simply stunning and so nice that the children can press the buttons to start the trains off!
Lovely model village with working interactive models, crazy golf, nice cafe, and even a climbing frame. What's not to like??
Hats off to the staff as they were so friendly and helpful. We will be back next time we go to devon
Top tip. If you take a picnic, get in the small train, and it can drop you off next to the river where there are picnic tables. It can then collect you later on when you have finished!

Wow wow wow wow wow. What a lovely day out for what we thought was a small sum of money. Most places would charge you for entry and use of activities. A must do if in the area, kids loved it and the thought and design that has gone into the models is outstanding. Such a lovely place and well worth the visit. Would absolutely recommend. Thank you DRC for a lovely day.

What a fun day out! Went as a big family, kids ages 4-8. Everyone had so much fun! The carriages with the Hornby train set ups were great (so much so that our 4 year old walked the carriages about 5 times). The play train is a great addition and something we’ve never seen before. The soft play was bigger than it looked at first and very well kept. And the added bonus of the train rides kept everyone entertained. We spent a good few hours here but could easily have spent more

Went to visit the centre today with my daughter after booking a slot couple weeks ago to be told when we arrived we couldn’t go in due to our tickets being expired. They had ran out last week not realising. I did mention when booking on the phone when booking that they ran out in April and clarified the 4 month covid extension. After asking if they could honour it she said no. I’m currently recovering after not being to well after having a baby the week before so wanted to do something nice with my daughter for the afternoon. Telling a 4 year old that they can’t go in was awful. She had been looking forward to it all week and was the first thing we had done since lockdown! We were members who used the centre lots with friends in the past. The lady called us back and said she would ask management still to be told no we couldn’t. We were told we could pay to go in but it was nearly 3pm the centre shuts at 5pm. I decided it wasn’t worth going in as not a great deal open for her to play on when paying full price. Slightly annoying when I’ve just missed out on the last few months of my membership. Really disappointed won’t be returning anytime soon. Clearly interested in profit over customer service!

I was very disappointed to read your review this morning and would like to respond to the points you have raised. Our business, like many others was closed for 3 and a half months due to the Covid 19 pandemic. When we made the decision to reopen on July 15th, we offered all existing season tickets a 4 month extension to the expiry date as explained to you on the phone, at the shop when you arrived and on our website. Your season ticket expired on 11th April (which would have given you 2 weeks left to run on it had we opened on our original date of March 28th). As a result of our new opening date, your ticket was valid for nearly 4 weeks which I consider a generous gesture and not a business only interested in profit as you suggest. You are correct in noting our indoor play areas are closed and due to this we have reduced all admissions by 20% to compensate. We still feel that the reduced price offers excellent value with two different train rides (unlimited rides), model railways, model village, museum, crazy golf and 2 outdoor play areas included. Although I am saddened with your review, I am very proud of all my staff who are working extremely hard in these very challenging times.
