About
A 6 mile rewarding South West Coast Path walk through 5000 years of history, including travelling above the coastline along the South Dorset Ridgeway, a Stone Age route peppered with archaeological remains. Below, St Peter's Abbey was a fifth century holy site. Subtropical gardens, a swannery and a fourteenth century chapel add to the many charms of the picturesque village of Abbotsbury.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A wonderful little village away from the tourist areas. The Coast Path goes right by it, be sure and walk into the village. The little village shop is very nice. Wonderful yellow stone thatched roof buildings. Nice Pub. Wonderful old church and the abbey is up on the hill with great views.

Views are stunning all along our jurassic coastal path, from Poole to Minehead. Walk anywhere within the coast and you won't be disappointed

We choose to walk the ridgeway over the coastal route on the South west coastal path. After the climb up from West Bexington it was mainly a flat walk with good going and great views . 17 miles to Osmington Mills but only took us old people 6 1/2 hours.

For a few miles east of Abbotsbury the path is way inland from the coast. For a mile around Abbotsbury itself the path provides great views both east and west. However, from there on to as far as Burton Bradstock the path is close to the shoreline with some frustrating walking over shingle. Far better at this point to head inland from Abbotsbury to pick up the West Dorset Ridgeway, which gives superb views as far as Start Point in Devon (on a clear day). Sadly the Ridgeway path ends at West Bexington on from there to Burton Bradstock you are down on the beach, or close to it.

This walk has fantastic views over Chessel beach and Abbotsbury as well as portland in the distance. You can park on the hill in one of lay-bys.You can walk along the ridge to Hardys monument (the seaman) or turn down to Abbotsbury down the old train path. There are plenty of walks that take you miles even as far as corfe castle but we decided to walk down to the pretty little village of Abbotsbury. The main road is very busy with traffic and if you are doing the circular walk back to the car ,not only does the footpath disappear it gets a very steep climb back. There are toilets at back street and a few shops as well as tea rooms but some are closed today. You can walk the path to the beach or to St,Catherines on the hill .

Incomparable views along this stretch of the southwest coastal path. We've walked this in all weathers with companions of varying ages and levels of fitness. It has its challenging aspects - steep climb up to St Catherine's chapel and the foot-slogging effort of shingle on Chesil beach. Combine with a trip to the sub-tropical gardens or children's barn or swannery if you want to maximise the experience for young/old. Otherwise, spend a long, happy day out walking and watching the sea come and go for free.

Walked along this beautiful coast for 5 hours in lovely sunshine from Abbotsbury to West Bexington at sea level and back to Abbotsbury along the top of the escarpment.
Better than being abroad!

As far as our eyes could see, beautiful English countryside. Lush greens surrounded us. Perfect for taking a long walk with our energetic working cocker spaniel.
