Mapperton is a glorious sandstone manor house and romantic valley garden...

Mapperton is a glorious sandstone manor house and romantic valley garden deep in a lost Dorset combe among tumbling hills and unspoiled countryside. Fifteen acres of gardens descend from the croquet lawn, through the formal topiary down to the wild garden. Mapperton is the home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, and welcomes visitors to the Gardens from 1 March to 31 October, to the House from 27 March to 31 October, and to the Sawmill Cafe from 24 March to 31 October.

You won't pass this house by on a casual drive but need to make a detour to find it as it's hidden away in the Dorset countryside and off the beaten track. On a sunny day the stone of the house looked golden as we arrived and every bit as you would imagine a typical, old country house in Dorset... More

Visited on a Sunday afternoon on a whim. Beautiful Tudor Manor House. We paid for house and garden entry; reasonable price at £12. Timed entry to the house with guided tour. Not normally my thing, but our guide was well informed and provided lots of information. The gardens are lovely; not over ornamental, but the structure is wonderful. We took... More

This is a wonderful example of a garden from another world. There is a little bit of everything here and it is well worth a visit. Things to note are the variety of planting and different landscapes. If you don't look for it, you could easily miss it, but don't. Especially in Spring time.

We only visited the gardens and not the house. The main reason to visit is to see the formal and highly structured late Edwardian gardens, typical of English gardens of this age. It is not immaculately maintained, there being areas that are a little run down around the edges, but it is very charming none the less. We particularly loved... More

When we arrived we had about three quarters of an hour before the house tour so spent time exploring the lovely gardens . Then into the house we were in a group and the guide took us from room to room ,not only telling us about important portraits and furniture but gave us a fascinating history of the family .

We visited last week. The signage was a bit misleading but after a coffee in the cafe found our way in. We swallowed hard at paying £9.00 to visit a garden (£12.00 if viewing house as well). After walking around the croquet lawn you go into the formal gardens according to the brochure. Sadly the gardens are far from formal.... More

Dear BrandyHampshire, I'm so sorry that the visit was not up to your expectations. You are right that there isn't a lot of colour at this time of year. We are however in the process of reviewing our planting and will take your comments into consideration. I hope you come back in the spring when there is more colour, and... More

Very little colour in these gardens - which is a shame at this time in the summer. The gardens are so very small - no wonder you're not given a map to guide you around!! In and out in 1/2 an hour. We were expecting so much more and left very disappointed. Save your money and go to Abbotsbury gardens... More

Dear Silkymacc, Thank you very much for your comments. You are quite right; we don't have lots of colourful annual borders. We have shrubs and trees - did you by the way see the tulip tree in flower? We have so many different roses and so many greens of trees, topiary and shrubs, and light and shade, and water and... More

The gardens are lovely; set in a valley with a couple of water features and plenty of places to sit and enjoy the vistas and the statues The house has an interesting history, connected with the Sandwich family explained with some anecdotes by the friendly house guides. Well worth a visit and advise that you book your tour as soon... More

Been here several times over the years, most recently in June. Had the guided tour around the house which appeared to be smaller than I thought it would be but worth doing. Gardens are lovely and always a pleasure. The restaurant is delightful and food very good. Highly recommend the vegetable terrine.

Both families arrived from around the country and overseas to celebrate the civil marriage of my cousin and his now wife. Despite the weather which cannot be controlled, the ceremony was held on the croquet lawn in a quality marquee, laid out to enable easy access and family orientation. The ceremony passed beautifully and the party moved on to dine.... More
