Overlooking Portland Harbour in Dorset stands one of Henry VIII's finest coastal forts, built in the early 1540s to protect against French and Spanish invasion. Today it provides a great day out for visitors and its audio tour, included in the admission price, tells of the castle's 450 year history and the part it played in the First and Second World Wars. Portland Castle offers lots to do for families and couples alike, and only four miles from Weymouth, this historic adventure can easily be combined with some more contemporary seaside fun.

Whilst on holiday in Portland we visited Portland Castle. It was so interesting and such an important building in the past to protect the area. Do visit when you’re in the area.

One of many of Henry VIII many castles around the Dorset coast. Well preserved and interesting, tranquil gardens and good sea views of the harbor. Nice little tea room and gift shop.

The castle and its grounds are a lovely, dog friendly, place to visit. Full of history with informative displays and a good audio tour. Also worth the visit at the end of exploring the castle is the small cafe. Delicious cream teas are served.

Enjoyed the visit. Staff were helpful and pointed out we were better to leave pushchaire in safe space. Interesting displays for young people too. Won’t take long but cafe and facilities were pleasant. It was early in the day so very quiet.

OK if you like historic remains but not a lot to see. Probably better if you go with children as they can run around and climb etc. Good for a quick visit if you are a member but expensive otherwise. Now surrounded by new build...More

Hi Yes the paths are flat enough, the only issue may be that there are areas you can only get to via stairs.
