    Disappointing
Waiting a very long time for order to be taken - had to go up and ask. Food arrived before tea and coffee. Fry was very greasy served on cold plate. Staff did apologise. Grounds were lovely for a walk.

Beautiful garden, just waking up with anemoes and crocus. Several trails to choose to walk, Beautiful woodland walk which will provide a wonderful shaded area in summer, at present the trees are sleeping. The history trail was very intersting and well laid out. The tea shop was very pleasnt and comfy, and prices were reasonable.

Avoid if you're in a manual wheelchair 👨‍🦽
Arrived with high hopes that at least the Lake Walk would be fully accessible. To our frustration, only a small part of the walk is on tarmac from the entrance towards the house going clockwise. Too much off-road, which doesn't work if you are an independent manual wheelchair user. Only works if you get pushed over the gravel/uneven path and even then it's tough going. Expressed our disappointment to the ticket office and our issues were not addressed. We were told it works OK if you push a heavy electric wheelchair. So its still not fully independently wheelchair accessible. BEWARE ...... entry fee a bit pricey just to get a view of the lake and house !!!!!!
We were sorry to read the below review, along with those posted on Facebook. It is disappointing, and unfair to suggest to people that Montalto Estate is unsuitable for those in manual wheelchairs. That simply isn’t the case. The Lake Walk is promoted on our website as fully accessible, and with an easy gradient. Indeed, not all the walk is on tarmac, as would be the norm for a country estate. The sections of walk you refer to are purpose built pathways, finished with blinding (not gravel paths), something that is common place for path creation. We have had 100s of 1000s of visitors through our Trails & Gardens, and with that many manual wheelchair users that have been able to navigate much of the grounds without complaint. May I asak how your issues could’ve been addressed at the time? Our prices are also in line or cheaper than many other visitor attractions throughout NI, and we’re content that the price is good value for the experience we provide visitors with. Won't be "rushing" back
Myself and 2 friends recently went to Montalto to visit the Christmas Shop, which is lovely and we picked up a few items for the festive season. It was only about 3.20pm so we then decided to go the Cafe for tea and cake. We were shown to our seat and someone took our order for tea and cake quite quickly, however we then waited over 10 mins before the refreshments were served. Only approx 20 mins later, we were still finishing our tea and having a nice catch up when the supervisor told us they were "closing in a couple of minutes" (not 20 or 30 minutes, but a couple!). I think she noticed the confusion on our faces and immediately offered to put our tea into takeaway cups. After paying the bill, I did speak with the supervisor and expressed our disappointment at being rushed out. I am not someone who likes to give a negative review but having looked at other reviews, and seeing Montalto's response to most negative reviews, I felt compelled to give my view. It would appear that the customer is on most occasions is at fault ie for not checking the website or opening times before visiting. Surely it is only manners to tell customers when they arrive that the cafe is closing shortly, giving them the choice to stay or not. It is not a case of the customer is always right, but not rushing your customers and common courtesy is surely not beyond Montalto.

Disappointing!!
We attended at the Halloween event last week having been gifted tickets. We love visiting the estate when we are home but the Halloween event was much too overcrowded and badly organised although the staff were trying their best in testing circumstances. A real shame given the beautiful surroundings. Having visited the Streamvale and Hydro events in recent years I don't think I could recommend this one to others.

I attended the Halloween event on Tuesday and we had an absolutely amazing experience. My oldest has Austim as well as a few other issues and the staff honestly couldn't have been more understanding and patient towards me and the boys.

The numbers were smaller I believe for the ASD time and I thought it was the prefect number as my Children felt very comfortable, Happy and safe and felt at ease to chat away to staff who were very understanding of my oldest speech delay and gave him time to speak as well as listening to the little one who is 3 chat away about the exciting displays he had seen outside.

We arrived at 9.30 and there was no queues at all and as it bucketed down which we knew would be the case after looking at the weather forecast i made sure my children were wearing wellies and they had the time of the lives running around playing. Of course the pumpkin patch was a bit mucky it was raining and it was a field so was to be expected but kids absolutely loved it and it didnt take away from the experience at all. The displays were really well made and the boys loved getting their photos taken with them.

After a very hard decision for the boys in which they decided which pumpkins were the best we took our pumpkins back up to the house there was a staff who was a great help. He had saw us struggling to carry the pumpkins as my son had to have the biggest one he could find and took it off us and carried it down for it to get carved. The other girls that greated us at the door were lovely and like I said everyone was so friendly and welcoming it really was a great experience they even offered to take our photos with the displays which was great cause it meant you could get really lovely family photos.

When we made it down stairs were he gave our pumpkins to another staff member who was more than helpful and cut the tops of and asked if we needed a hand to scoop the inside out which was brilliant as due to the oldest wee mans issues he couldnt have done it so it was great that we were able to get help to do it and the youngest really enjoyed watching the whole thing and was making sure it was done right lol.

At the end of the hall there was a station of a number of staff who were carvers and drawing the faces. Both boys got to pick their faces and the staff were again really lovely and took the time to chat to both boys and the boys were delighted that they got to pick the designs and then we got told to come back later on to collect them.

We then headed back up the stairs and really enjoyed the activies up stairs. We done colouring in, got our photos taken on the red throne and then decorated hedgehog pictures. The lady doing the hedgehog picture was so patient and great with the boys and we have our master pieces now hanging up. The boys absolutely loved doing it. There was an act to who was juggling and had objects that light up and honestly boy both really enjoyed it and sat and watched it and really did love it and were absolutely glued to the whole act.

We then made our way into the party room I'll call it where there was dip marshmallows treats which were absolutely delicious and the kids loved it. I loved that the chocolate fountains weren't huge as it meant little hands didn't get burnt and messy and the boys didn't need much help. Again the girl doing it was brilliant and helped the boys put sprinkles on at the end. At the side was face painting which of course the boys joined in and we had a very happy Captain America and Spiderman then. We then went on and had a chat with a puppet and a dance on the dance floor before joining the madness of the bouncing castle. Have to say this was really well managed. The girl on it was very observant and made sure everyone was OK and right amount was on and asked the younger wee ones to go to the toddler one and the boys again loved it. It is worth saying that my 3 and 5 year old were both on the larger castle with older ones and i really had no issue as the staff managed it well and I had no safety concerns.

After a walk along the grounds then we had a very tired couple of boys so we got lunch from the coffee cart and went inside and enjoyed out lunch by the fire and got warmed up. We then went back down and were directed to our pumpkins and we had 2 very happy boys with there final creations.

Me and the boys really enjoyed our day overall. The staff were so friendly and helpful and made the boys feel so at ease and comfortable and they really did put the effort in to stop and listen to my oldest who has a speech delay and really engage with both of the kids and it was a really great day and we will definitely be back to explore the grounds more. It really is hard to find things that both boys would like but honestly both boys really loved it and I would highly recommend. They both asked to go again the next day which I think speaks volumes. We will be back again!

I imagine that it wouldn't matter which season of the year you chose to visit Montalto Estate, the effect would still be the same. Total tranquility and at one with nature in those stunning grounds. It's as if you've been transported to a different world.
Back to the real world and the coffee, scones (and ice-cream especially) are the extra treat before you leave.

Grounds and walks are lovely but very disappointed in the cafe. Spray can cream is not what I would expect for fresh cream. Chocolate cake very dry and scone underdone. Coffee also weak.

We’re very sorry to read of your café experience. The cream we serve is whipped cream, served via a gas-charged gun. This would be normal for a lot of establishments, but I can appreciate it if that isn’t to your taste. With regards to the sweet items and coffee, did you happen to ask to speak with a supervisor or the manager? We would have been happy to offer alternatives, and address your dissatisfaction where possible. We hope to be able to welcome you back again soon. Regards, Keith Reilly Operations Director

I was very disappointed today (Monday) when I arrived at lunchtime only to find a small part of cafe open. It states at the entrance to estate that cafe is now open 7 days a week (but doesnt say very limited selection on a Monday). There was a very small selection of hot food so we ordered tea & scones & got them in a paper box and paper cup. I couldn't find any milk so asked the girl and she handed me a 2 litre milk carton!!!! I asked why wasn't the full cafe open and young fella said it was hard to get staff in the hospitality sector. I was so disappointed as always liked Montalto and brought my friend who had travelled a ling way and had never been before. We were both very disappointed.

I’m very sorry to read of your disappointment. Unfortunately you are incorrect. It states at the entrance to estate, ‘MONTALTO ESTATE OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK through July & August Opening times at www.montaltoestate.com’ The sign does not provide details of the various aspects of the estate, nor times. A banner such as the one we have out by the road is more to catch the eye of passing traffic, and inform people of the additional opening. Much more copy on this, and it wouldn’t be able to be taken in all at once The Café is not open on a Monday or Tuesday and a quick check of our website, even just the homepage, would have provided you with that information. Our ice-cream parlour is open though, and is only intended to serve a small selection of food options, and yes, in a take-out style. The milk sits with other consumables as part of our drinks station in the main seating area of the parlour, and you would have walked past this to reach the main counter and till area Perhaps if travelling any distance going forward, and to avoid disappointment, it would be prudent to check information available on opening times and similar. All the necessary opening days and times for the various aspects of the estate are available for any visitors/potential visitors to read. Unfortunately we cannot make people review this information before they visit Sincerely Keith Reilly Operations Director

Lovely place to go! The cafe is lovely, plenty of space, nice food and the staff are helpful. The gardens and trails are brilliant - very clean and picturesque. They have a really good adventure playground for families, and nice coffee. The dog friendly section in the tearoom is a brilliant bonus. We shall be back!

I can't fault the gardens, a wonderful afternoon out. Top tip- There are only a few picnic tables (but that keeps the ground looking pretty) so I'd suggests PICNIC BLANKET if a picnic is your intention, just incase. The gardens are so pretty with winding paths and open areas, plenty of colour and interesting detail. There is a longer forest walk and a kids natural PLAYPARK, although as a couple we didn't see it. The facilities were excellent and clean. The cafe seems a bit expensive and busy, we took a picnic on this, out second visit. DOG FRIENDLY, on leads, there wasn't an excessive amount of dogs there. Dogs are allowed in an area if you buy the cafe food. There is a very small dog off lead, fully enclosed grass area to let the dogs free after their car journey, but not an exercise area as such. I do agree with others that a few extra signs would be helpful for people with no sense of direction like myself. IT'S DEFINITELY worth a visit if you haven't been and I believe they have lots of events on but it is was to be busy I'd suggest a picnic. I found the staff pleasant and helpful. There is a gift shop on site. Just to note to those with nervous dogs (or impatient kids)that that the admission area is a bit of a bottleneck, badly designed near the cafe seating so is noisy, busy and slow.
