Discover 300 years of Scottish history through this magnificent and carefully conserved neo-Palladian villa. Newhailes is famed for having some of the finest rococo interiors in Scotland. There are sumptuous decorative details at every turn, from the gilded eagles over the drawing room windows to the exquisite Chinese wallpaper and imposing Italian marble fireplaces. A major part of the house's charm is its mellow feel. Newhailes has been allowed to grow old gracefully through a pioneering conservation policy which does 'as much as is necessary, but as little as possible' to keep the house in good order without disturbing its 'untouched' atmosphere.

Great place to explore

One of my favourite places and about to get even better with lots of development going on. The house is amazing and every visit reveals something new.

We love Newhailles not just for the house but the walks are good and they are very dog friendly. There is a small cafe and shop but we go often to walk the dogs because it is safe and they love it

Went to the park to discover its delights. Paid £4 parking for 2 cars. After a short while needed a toilet stop for two three year olds. Disappointingly, no toilets could be found so had to leave the park. Felt like a rip-off!

Dear crissdolan, We are sorry you felt our car-park charges were a rip-off. As we are a charity and private landowners not funded by the council, our car park charges are essential in helping to fund the costly upkeep and tidying of our grounds. Our estate is visited by upwards of 90,000 people (and their dogs) each year, so you... More

I booked on the house tour through the number given on the National Trust of Scotland's website. It is advisable to do this. There was an option of a family or a full house tour. The lift enables wheelchair and pram access. Overall there are some really interesting facts and some stunning architecture. It is lovely to see that the... More

Being NT & NTS members made the visit exceptional value for money! We joined the first tour and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Rooms presented that the owners had just popped out for lunch or to spend an hour or two in the library. The guide was well informed and shared the history of the family as well as some nice... Dear AtlanticOrca, Thank you for visiting us and for the lovely review. You are correct, many NT - and indeed NTS sites - now allow photography. The use of flash is not the issue, as the claim of deterioration of textiles and artwork from flash photography has now been discredited, but we have decided to continue to not allow the... More

The dog and I visited on an October Sunday and there were lots of other dogs being walked around the very extensive grounds. It helped that the weather was sunny and mild. I then left the dog in the car and walked the short distance to the stable block where the cafe and toilets are located. I was the first... More

As a national trust member I'm always on the lookout for places to use my membership when on holiday. Newhailes came up as one neither I nor my parents had been to so I thought me and my partner could pop in to see what it was like while we were in the area. Unfortunately the place seemed largely closed.... More

Dear KungPaoCow, Thank you for visiting Newhailes. We're sorry the visit didn't quite live up to your expectations. As you say, we are normally closed on Tuesdays/Wednesdays during the colder months in order to keep operating costs down during the time of the year when visitor numbers are low. We always recommend people check our website or give us a... More

I visited Newhailes yesterday and took a guided tour with NTS guide Wendy who was friendly, enthusiastic and very well informed. The house has not been prettified and has been kept much as it would have been when it was occupied, containing everything from antique furniture and Allan Ramsay paintings to simple family items. The Library is impressive but don't... More
