Overview
More
Discover 300 years of Scottish history through this magnificent and carefully conserved neo-Palladian villa. Newhailes is famed for having some of the finest rococo interiors in Scotland. There are sumptuous decorative details at every turn, from the gilded eagles over the drawing room windows to the exquisite Chinese wallpaper and imposing Italian marble fireplaces. A major part of the house's charm is its mellow feel. Newhailes has been allowed to grow old gracefully through a pioneering conservation policy which does 'as much as is necessary, but as little as possible' to keep the house in good order without disturbing its 'untouched' atmosphere.

We enjoyed a nice walk along the paths. There is plenty to see, from the dilapidated stone out buildings to the grand house. There was lots of construction work going on around the stables in January 2018, so there may be new facilities for next...More

The mansion very much needs a coat of paint and its a shame that the Shell Grotto and Tea House are ruins. A great deal of work going on in the walled gardens. Hopefully the cafe will open throughout the winter in future. The 'Lady's...More

Never been inside - but the extensive grounds offer a welcome break, and so close to edinburgh or Musselburgh.

The gardens are a nice area to walk with the dogs even though the people who run the place appear to hate all dog owners which is odd considering the owner who donated the estate was apparently a dog lover. Could do with some bins...More

What a fantastic place, with original furniture, decor and antiquities. Such an atmospheric place that you could imagine yourself living there back in the 17c. But I have to say that everybody in our group jumped when, as we were walking around the bedrooms, there...More

Newhailes is not the polished and buffed house often found amongst National trust properties; instead the Trust has intervened minimally, and has left the house much as it was handed to them. You see what the last owner saw, including such poignant details as the...More
