Discover 300 years of Scottish history through this magnificent and carefully conserved neo-Palladian villa. Newhailes is famed for having some of the finest rococo interiors in Scotland. There are sumptuous decorative details at every turn, from the gilded eagles over the drawing room windows to the exquisite Chinese wallpaper and imposing Italian marble fireplaces. A major part of the house's charm is its mellow feel. Newhailes has been allowed to grow old gracefully through a pioneering conservation policy which does 'as much as is necessary, but as little as possible' to keep the house in good order without disturbing its 'untouched' atmosphere.

You can go round this house only as part of a guided group. Our guide, Wendy, was knowledgeable and helpful. We could spend as much time as we wanted in each room. There are no gardens to visit here. We had a snack from the café afterwards but the small warm pies were disappointing.

Dear Couple-Tadworth, Thank you for your nice comments about your tour guide, Wendy. You are correct, we do not have formal gardens, however we are in the process of restoring the formal historic garden and we do have 80 acres of land, a lot of which was purposely made as a 'designed landscape' in the 18th century, including elements like... Was near where we were staying so popped in past - you have to book on a tour as not able to walk round the house on your own. Just by timing we arrived when the family tour was due. Tour guide was very informative and took time to include our daughter - asking her questions to find hidden things... More

We learned from the introductory video that Newhailes has been conserved, not restored. This made the house seem more real and a part of history. Our guide, Sheila, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. There was plenty of time in each room to hear about the history, paintings and objects. It felt special to be in a small group with a guide,... Visited Newhailes on the 17th of July, I had been eagerly anticipating my visit as I love architecture and interior design, and as a member of the national trust. However, my hopes of a light hearted, informative and fun tour were dashed, we were met by our tour guide Derek who left much to be imagined! He babbled on outside... More

Dear Fraser W, We are so sorry that you had a disappointing experience of one of our guided tours. We know from our own informal and formal feedback processes, including the reviews on this site, that the guided tour of Newhailes is usually a highlight of people’s experience of our property. Naturally, none of this takes away from your own... More

I decided on the spur of the moment to visit Newhailes & am so glad I did as it was so interesting! The inside of the house is wonderful & I am inclined to disagree with those who feels it needs touching up as I think it adds to a feeling of stepping back in time! I also loved all... More

I've wanted to visit this place for a few years after reading about it. We were staying in the area for a couple of days so made a point of going. Introductory video in the stable block was good. Visits are by guided tour only so we had a coffee while waiting - the young ladies in the cafe are... More

This a very interesting house to visit. You have to have a tour guide but that enhances the visit. Our guide, Alison, was extremely knowledgeable and talked us through each room. It is no longer a house that anyone lives in and National Trust for Scotland have more or less kept the house in its original form. I would recommend... More

We were looking forward to see this house as the outside façade is gorgeous with a lovely driveway and curious secret underground tunnel (for servants), but the inside needs a lot of work and has quite a depressive dark green colour throughout. I've been in many buildings that have been upgraded but still kept their old traditional look and I... More

Hi mollyham4, Thank you for your review, we're glad you thought your tour guide was helpful and informative. We visited new hails as part of an arranged cadburys Easter egg hunt organised through the national trust, it was very easy to find and we'll sign posted.
