About
Located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres lies Benromach Distillery. From a small and almost lost distillery emerged a single malt withdistinctive qualities reflecting its hand made credentials as well as encapsulating the self-reliance, sophistication and modern values of Scotland today.Established in 1898, the distillery experienced many closures and changes in ownership prior to 1993, when malt whisky specialists, Gordon & MacPhail rescued it. Following an extensive reinstallation project, embracing the distillery's original character, Benromach was officially re-opened by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1998.Just three experienced distillers create Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They personally ensure that only the highest quality spirit is filled into sturdy oak casks before being left to mature at Benromach Distillery for many years.

    Gintastic!
First distillery tour with my family during their visit here. Really great Gin tour with the lovely and knowledgeable Emma. She really knows her stuff and answered all of our questions with confidence and patience. We really enjoyed getting our noses involved as we went through all the botanicals used in the Red Door Gin, really good fun. At the end we went onto they stylish bar and tried their three Red Door gins and then was offered a G&T of our choice which was really delicious. A really great, informative (and slightly tipsy) tour. I would highly recommend for any Gin lover of even if you're not! Would do it again. Thanks Emma!

    Bring on the Whisky
Was shown round on our first ever Whisky tour by Robert. I’m so glad we picked this distillery. We learnt all about the processes in the making of Whisky & then after the tour Robert gave us further hints on tasting. Many thanks to Alannah for helping sort out a visit too

Great whiskey and gin tours. Great value for money.
Excellent tours of both the Whiskey and the Gin distilleries. The whiskey tour takes you through all the process of production and at the end you get to sample a 10y and a 15y. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and enjoyed talking us through the history of the business. The gin tour was surprisingly much small scale than we thought it would be but had a fun element of squish and sniff of the botanicals that are added to get the various flavours. At the end you get to sample all three varieties and then choose which you’d like as a full G&T. Emma was a great tour guide and we had a lovely chat whilst enjoying our drinks in the mini bar. Excellent way to spend a couple of hours learning about their spirits.

    Smaller is better
We wanted to visit a small, independent distillery and Banromach provided just that. Rob and Matthew showed us around as part of a tour and they were excellent hosts. A distillery that does everything by hand is a true rarity these days. We enjoyed a dram or two in their great visitors' centre and I'm would really recommend the 15 year old single malt. A great way to spend a few hours in Speyside. Thank you.

Amazing tour with the new boy Matt. I loved it. In it's current format it's not that old but they are doing lovely quality stuff. Had a great tasting after the tour. Any visit to Speyside is not complete without coming here

    Heritage Tour
We had the Heritage Tour with Marley and it was really nice. We learned much about the Destillery and the Process how Benromach makes it's unique spirit. To smell and see the all steps and later the Dunnage-Warehouses was great. When we get our drams, Marley guided us through all whiskys with tasting notes after we tried and said what we smell and taste. Thank you for this nice tour

    Solid your, urban location
Did the tour and tasted the 10 and 25 year. Tour was interesting and thorough. Distillery is in an urban area tucked into an industrial estate… so not really as charming a location as many of the other Speyside spots. The whisky was solid- a hint of smoke and they are clearly a smaller distillery looking to do something unique and authentic.

Unique experience for Gin inmidst Malt Whisky Country
The Red Door GIN experience with Emma, a one of a kind most enjoyable, most exclusive and most interesting tour of this kind we ever have enjoyed. This is a must and not just for Gin Lover, for everyone interested to step into a new adventure and feel the warmth of Scotland and its people. You will gather plenty information with a smile and a wee joke. You will experiment with your senses, play with the ingredients of the real botanic gin and get an idea about your own sensitivity. The tasting had a great touch of luxury and has shown Emma's passion and knowledge. There was no time pressure whatsoever and you will be treated like the VIP finally found its way to this hidden gem, The RED DOOR. Highly, highly recommended!

As a whisky fan I was looking forward to the “Heritage Tour” experience and parted with £75 to join it.

Grace, our tour guide and host gave a good (scripted) history before we commenced a walking tour of the working distillery which was informative and interesting, however picture opportunities were very limited, which was disappointing.

Following the tour, about 40mins, we were expecting a special tasting as the heritage tour was advertised as below:

“THE HERITAGE TOUR

Learn firsthand about the rich heritage of our distillery before enjoying a tutored tasting of Benromach’s liquid history - a range of unique and rare whiskies, personally selected by our Distillery Manager. Sit back and relax with your drams, while your host regales you with tales of Benromach past and present.

The Heritage Tour lasts 2 hours and costs £75 per person.”

Unfortunately the range of “unique and rare whiskies” consisted of 3 core range offerings, a distillery exclusive and an historic 1975, so not as described, perhaps 40% accurate!

The tasting also seemed rather rushed in a small sterile office space which wasn’t relaxing and the “tutored tasting” was limited to a very brief description of each dram.

For a tour costing £75 it’s not unreasonable to expect some branded glassware and perhaps a small takeaway bottle or discount in the shop, however none of these featured in the heritage tour and despite the whisky being ok and some parts of the tour informative we left very disappointed with the overall experience and cannot visiting recommend this distillery or if you do, do not go for the massively overpriced heritage tour.

We visited this distillery, that I was unaware of. However, the girl that served us behind the counter wasn't interested in us at all, or interested in letting us try any products, so we weren't able to find out if we liked Benromach Distillery or not. The other odd thing about this distillery was that when I requested to try some of the products there on sale, she proceeded to start telling me all about licencing laws, and that this was the reason why the whisky couldn’t be tried. However, I have spent some time working in the area in the past, and I was able to inform her that there is nothing under the current licensing laws within Scotland, to prevent them offering anyone a sample of any of their whisky (as long as they are not driving); in response she said she didn’t really know what the law was, but that she had just been told to tell anyone who visits this nonsense by her manager. Really, very disappointing service, defo give this one a miss.

Brilliant gin experience with an engaging and friendly guide. With the practical demonstration, which we could all take part in, we evolved our sense of botanicals within the Red Door gin and beyond to give us a deeper appreciation for the experience. We were also served a gin from their seasonal collection and a cocktail which were both made as we all enjoyed in the genuine and warm atmosphere created by our tour guide. They even wrote down the recipe for the cocktail for our twist with the gin we took home. Would love to visit again.

Very good value one hour tour of ‘Red Door’ gins at Benromach Distillery, Forres. Kelly was excellent tour guide. Clear and well explained and fun. All staff welcoming. Superb whisky in the shop afterwards. Five star value at only £10 a head for a one hour tour for a birthday experience.
