While walking along the sea front at Largs we stopped at the 'Pencil' which is just to the Southern end of the town in a little grassy area that would be suitable for a picnic on a nice summers day. The monument is not particularly...More

Driving in from the south, the “pencil” is one of the first things you see, so I guess it fulfils the first rules of monuments by being visible, and distinctive. Granted, there is nothing overly elaborate about the design, but I have no problem with...More

This monument, which looks like a gigantic pencil, commemorates the defeat of a Viking fleet "Battle of Largs" at this spot in 1263. It is a lovely place to come for a walk or a picnic. We normally park in the largs marina carpark and...More

I love going out for a beautiful coastal walk and this place has one of the beautiful scenery I visited. It just so happened that it’s raining but it’s still beautiful place to relax.

We walked out to the Pencil Monument but despite the lovely views and seeing the dolphins and other assorted wildlife, found it to be rather uninspiring. It is certainly worth taking the walk though as the whole ambiance is very relaxing.

It's a nice stroll along the shore to get to the pencil, which commemorates the battle of Largs in 1263.
