Even if you hadn't planned a visit, you almost fall over The Pier Arts Centre as you turn left and walk down the street from the ferry terminal. And what a gem ! The Arts Centre provides a fascinating experience on all levels starting with the building itself, inside and out. It marries the old and new beautifully, and is... More

I had looked forward to this visit as I really like the St Ives artists. These I did enjoy but the contemporary exhibition did not appeal to me. There was a film showing as part of this exhibition that was overwhelming the whole building, the noise from it spoiled the visit. I do not know how the staff on the... More

Unbelievable! The mantras were so close I thought they would hit us (but they didn't). An experience I will never forget.

What a beautiful little gallery to find in Stromness - marvellous collection esp of Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicolson. Lovely converted historic building too with modern sympathetic extension, in great pierside location.

We were really surprised to find such a wonderful gallery in a small town in the Orkney Islands - it certainly punches above it's weight. The building is beautiful, a lovely piece of architecture. The collection includes works by Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson and also had some works by Anish Kapoor. This is a really wonderful little gallery and... More

Quite rightly this is an award winning building sitting nicely on the harbour side. The permanent collection includes many pieces by renowned artists including Barbara Hepworth.

We love this art gallery and visit it every time we visit Stromness - about once a year. It never fails to delight and amaze. We love the permanent collection featuring some of our favourite artists from St. Ives - Ben Nicholson, Alfred Wallis, Terry Frost and Roger Hilton. There is also a Sean Scully as well as featuring local... More

The building is somewhat at odds with the rest of Stromness, but if the current collection on show is anything to go by it is a classic case of style over substance.

Something of a tardis of a building, well worth a visit and best of all it's free. It's got a couple of Hepworths but one was on tour. I enjoyed the local artists work (Wishart) who painted the view from her window,
