Great tour

Worth the walk to go inside the lighthouse but check opening times as only open 3 days a week. Go before end of September to see the lamps and lenses in situ before they are replaced by led lights over the winter. Very informative guide brings the building to life. Lots of artefacts on display. Wear trainers or good shoes as there are lots of steps.

a small trip back in time to a lighthouse and surrounding area to see what life was like for staff.

be warned -- the tides need to be monitored and the local bird population are very accurate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pleasant walk along the dunes to reach this distinctive vertically striped lighthouse. Great views across the water where the Atlantic meets the North Sea. Very lonely and beautiful.

Do not miss this off your trip. It's a stunning place and the views are just amazing. Sanday itself is a lovely island; very much recommended.

So worth the trek to get there
Sep 2017 • Friends
We had a personalised guided tour to the lighthouse with the ranger Emma and her partner Russ. They have an absolute wealth of knowledge about the area and in particular the wildlife and oceanography. Its obvious that they have a real love for Sanday, and the entire trip was a once in a lifetime experience. The views from the top are breathtaking.

Great visit
Aug 2017 • Family
The tide was in so we did not go over to the lighthouse, but it did not matter as we got a good view of it. The star attraction of this walk was the wildlife. Lots of birds and best of all the seals that were checking us out from the sea. Well worth the walk in the wind.

Great place to visit
Jul 2017 • Couples
As said before you have to be careful when crossing. If you are unsure of the tide there is a handy phone app called my tide times which has proved accurate. This little island is a gem with wonderful fragrances from the various plants, seals, bird life and great scenery. If your stay on Sanday is timed right the tour of the lighthouse by Emma the ranger is well worth doing. On a clear day you can see Fair isle in the distance

A Lighthouse Nut's Delight
Jul 2017 • Friends
A group of lighthouse enthusiasts visited the lighthouse in the company of the wonderful Sanday ranger, Emma, and her equally charming husband, Russ.
She took us on a tour of the island whilst we were waiting for the tide to be right for us to cross the causeway. Her commentary on our tour of the island was entertaining, educational and informative. She will patiently answer questions. When she was stumped for a name by a flower I found, she phoned Russ, to get him to bring some books on flora so we could identify it.
Her knowledge of the lighthouse was good, but she was delighted to learn more from the well-informed members of our group.
The causeway has to be negotiated with great care but she got us all there and back in one piece.
I must also mention the driver, Evan and Heather, whose friendly attitude and gentle but firm way in gathering the party up to get them to the next stop was much appreciated.
It was an excellent day due to the hard graft of these four people

Bit of a trek
Jun 2017 • Family
Unfortunately the track, to this unusual lighthouse with vertical stripes not horizontal and in black and white, is badly degraded and not suitable for use by a car. You can walk about 2 miles to it. Its now operated remotely but you can see where the lighthouse keeper and family used to live in this remote place. a leaflet about it is available at the heritage centre.

A rare treat, as it is different!
Sep 2016 • Couples
This light house is some distance form where you can now park as some of the approach road has been undercut by the sea. On the day we visited, we got our timing wrong and the tide was not suitable for us to get close to the light house, but it is unique amongst Orkney light houses due to the vertical stripes. Well worth the effort.
