Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A highlight of recent trip to Orkney Islands. Hosts Karen and Andy are so warm and welcoming, possessing great mix of local understanding, knowledge and love of where they live. Both great at communicating all of this things with participants on tour. Tour covers pre- history, history and life today on Westray. Highlight for me was the bumpy track up to Noup Head lighthouse and cliffs, and guessing flight times between Westray and Papa Westray! Light relief against the terrible weather - bad weather didn’t stop our hosts from getting us to all the sights and in many ways the elements added to the atmosphere. A day I will not forget.

Hi Gill Thanks for your lovely review, much appreciated. We really enjoyed our day with you and your group, it was certainly memorable - we haven't had a very good summer this year but I think your group was the wettest we have had (so far!). The road up to Noup is certainly memorable too, we hope one day it will be refurbished a bit but apart from the wear and tear on the bus it is definitely a key part of our tour. Karen is annoyed as she has lost her winning streak in the 'guess the flight times' this week. We were both caught out by an unexpected loop! Best wishes to you, hope to see you back here some day. Andy and Karen

Despite ghastly weather, this trip was a real pleasure thanks to Karen and Andy. You get a genuine local's eye view of all sorts of things as well as an honest (they'll cheerfully admit what they don't know) account of local history and ruins. You'll get great stories, close up puffins, Viking drains, hair raising clifftops (you don't have to stand too close) and genuine home cooking - rock cakes, soup, family salad and in honour of our cold and wet day a sticky toffee pudding. The little bits of family and local history they drop give you a real picture of a society where people help each other out, share stuff and manage their own environment. Completely charming and a real lesson for urbanites. Very, very highly recommended - oh, and they also looked after me with my poor mobility, making sure I could do the walks etc.

Hello L Thanks for your review, as we always say, we really appreciate every time someone takes the time to write one for us. It was a pleasure to show you around Westray last week, it's a pity the weather wasn't great, we kind of have to put up with a lot of 'ghastly' weather but it does make us appreciate the sunny days even more! We hope you made it back for your election all nighter, I stayed up for hours on Thursday night/Friday morning and am still tired! Best wishes Andy and Karen

Karen and Andy provided a great day for their visitors, wildlife history and archaeology, plus wonderful rock buns, biscuits and an amazing lunch of local produce. Westray is a lovely island and with such friendly informative ambassadors, it deserves to be better known. Definitely a highlight of our holiday.

Hello! Thanks for your review, we really appreciate every one that takes the time to do one. It was a pleasure to show you around Westray last week, and well done for picking a sunny day! We agree that Westray should be better known, but I guess its getting the balance right as we don't want to be over run. I suppose the ferry capacity and accommodation availability acts as a natural cap. Best wishes Andy and Karen

As part of our NC500 tour we spent 6 days on the Orkney Islands - we booked a tour to Westray to hopefully see Puffins and experience the history of a smaller island. We were not disappointed!! Andy and Karen met us off the ferry and were fantastic hosts both in their knowledge of the wildlife and the history of their island. Nothing was too much trouble - morning coffee and lunch at their home were excellent - and they packed far more into one day than we would ever have been able to do .An absolutely brilliant day with a lovely couple intent on making our experience as good as it could be. Thank you very much!!

Hello Derek Thanks for your very kind review, we really appreciate it when our guests take the time to write one. We really enjoyed showing you both around Westray last month and are delighted you had a good day over here. A lot of the birds continue to give us concerns, we have hardly seen any chicks except for gannets and a few kittiwakes and there are still far too many predators around near where the puffins live. Hope the rest of your Scottish tour went well Best wishes Andy and Karen

The day trip on Westray with Karen and Andy was a highlight of our week on the Orkneys. They both have an obvious love of the island which makes the tour special…. You are invited into their home literally (for lunch…) and more broadly as you travel the island and hear the stories and history. It’s a great day.

Hi Fiona Thanks for the review, much appreciated, and thanks for your company last week. We really enjoyed showing you around and taking you both down to the puffins in the evening, you certainly picked a good day to be here, we haven't seen the sun much since then! Best wishes to you both Andy and Karen

Andy and Karen provided an unforgettable day on this beautiful island. They were professional and a lovely couple . Their enthusiasm for Westray was abundantly apparent from the off and we would highly recommend using them.

Hi Andy Thanks for taking the time to write a review, much appreciated. Thanks for joining us in Westray, it seems like a long time ago already although its just a few weeks. The weather hasn't improved much since you were here, still colder than we would like. There are a few more puffins around thankfully, but we are not convinced many of the birds are breeding this year which is a big concern. Best wishes to you both Andy & Karen

What a fabulous day with Karen and Andy on Westray. This is an absolute gem of an island and we will definitely return. Karen was brought up on Westray and is heavenly, insightful, interesting and great fun. She will also cook up a storm. We were met by Andy off the Logan air flight from Kirkwall. He has an Archaeological background and is hugely knowledgeable about the historical and natural areas of interest (of which there are many) The whole tour group chatted away like old friends enjoying scones in Karen and Andy’s kitchen and later a delicious lunch. Their love of their home, wildlife and its history is infectious and it will seep through you. We will be back Karen and Andy, put the kettle on.

Hello Madeleine Thanks for your lovely review, we really enjoyed spending the day with you both and Gordon yesterday. Your group certainly did mix well and it makes our job a pleasure when folk are chatty and happy to share stories over lunch. We will have the kettle and coffee machine ready for your return, next time I will order some warmth and sunshine too!! There's plenty of Westray you didn't see and maybe next time those sculptures will have a permanent home. Best wishes to you and your very sprightly mum. Andy and Karen

During a wonderful week long trip to Orkney, our group agreed that this tour was probably the highlight. Karen and Andy were excellent hosts, who allowed us into their lovely home. All correspondence before the visit was calmly efficient and friendly.
The bird life and the sea cliffs were incredible. The beaches were out of this world. The stories and knowledge of the people and place brought the whole day together for us all.
Really good value, and I’d highly recommend the experience.

What an amazing day with Andy & Karen on Westray. So much insight, Karen the local and Andy with his archaeological background. Andy picked us up from the ferry jetty, and we felt so welcome in Andy & Karen's home for lovely food and chats, with others from far flung shores visiting the island. The tour meant we benefited from a full insight into Westary, without it we wouldn't have even scratched the surface. Excellent, highly recommended.

We had a very enjoyable day and saw so much of Westray that we wouldn’t have seen on our own. Andy and Karen were very knowledgeable on the history and archeology of Westray as well as giving us very interesting insights into the social history of the island. The lunch was superb with mostly local ingredients. We particularly enjoyed the relaxed nature of the tour with plenty of time to enjoy each aspect of the tour. I would strongly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Westray.
