Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Consult the website before visiting. It might be opened for a a few days every year. We made a pretty long drive from the Eilean Donan Castle and it was closed with no clear signs except a one that TODAY the castle is closed. After a thorough search we found the very peculiar date opening schedule.

Grab a visit to this private seat of Clan McKenzie from that Laird and Lady themselves. Limited tours offered but that just makes the tour more special. The tour is full of intricate details and history of the castle and it's inhabitants. Fascinating and excellent hosts make you feel welcome in their home.

Only a few minutes walking distance from the centre of Strathpeffer, during a raining day last week we had the opportunity to admire the exterior of this fascinating building and to meet with the feeling along its surrounding area. Although there were signs informing us that it was not opened to visitors we decided to walk until where possible. The passage from the main road is wide but ..our path to medieval era was narrow because this Castle has very limited days and hours to accept tourists in its interior. Nevertheless, we did not felt like being not welcome by the inhabitans(?) of the Castle Leod, which is something we feel thankful for.We also had admired the tallest Segovia! Maybe next time in Highlands we are more lucky and may we shall be the ones of the visitors who can take pictures not only from the surroundings of this wonderful historic Castle ...

Less than a mile walk from the village square, this enchanting castle resides among beautiful trees and fields. The inside is attractively decorated and boasts an impressive fireplace. Well worth a visit whether or not you're into history. Unquestionably the highlight of my stay in Strathpeffer.

We visited the castle over the week-end - were greeted at the entrance by the 5th Earl, a charming person - it is only open for one long week-end a month. Definitely worth a visit as it has some amazing history and the Earl is trying to restore some of the areas that need to renovation. The sitting room has a great fireplace and paintings of the previous owners. We loved the billiards room, the dining room and the kitchen and dungeon. The grounds have some interesting very old trees. Great fun!

After a long drive out following our satnav to the postcode on the website we ended up at a sawmill, not a castle. I'm sure the castle would be nice based on the pictures but we couldn't find it. When we asked one of the workers at the sawmill he advised that it wasn't nearby, but not too bother as it's closed to the public anyway. Pity. I'd advise contacting somebody in advance to get directions and to see if it's open first. Obviously it's not the fault of the castle of staff so I'm still giving this 3 out of 5.

I originally went to Castle Leod in 2014 during the "Scottish Homecoming" and were met by the Clan Chief and his Lady (and their wonderful pup) even though we had missed our changed tour time. They were wonderful people then and still were when I went back in 2015 for the Gathering. The home, though perhaps a bit beaten up, has a wonderful beauty to it and is very happily situated on the land. It is quiet, serene, and beautiful. A wonderful place to visit if you have the chance. The Clan Chief also does some amazing art!

Nestled back from the main road into Strathpeffer, the castle exudes mystery and charm, providing a real sense of history. There is a conveniently located car park just off the entrance to the castle but is only a 10 minute walk from the centre of Strathpeffer. Castle Leod is still the family home of the current chief of the clan MacKenzie - the Cabefeidh - and there are records and remnants of the many colourful inhabitants from the past. A must see of any travellers highland itinerary.

Though it was the wrong time of year, the family kindly let us walk around the meadows and take pictures of the blue bells and the stunning flowing hills and green magic that is Scotland. We did not bother the family , just phoned and asked to be able to walk around the farm. It was lovely. I shall be back to see the castle one day, and appreciate the kindness of the family.
