- Jonathan PLeeds, United Kingdom17 contributionsSlick and very engaging tour around a first class distilleryJust stumbled on this as it was the closest to the Askaig ferry after three days on Jura. Landed on my feet! Just one year into the new Johnny Walke dispensation, the tour is first rate with genuine thought going into telling the complex story of whisky making. Our guide Alisha was very well informed and the finale tasting complete with a side order of Johnny Walker old fashioned did not disappoint. Couldn’t afford all of my favourites but still left feeling I had learnt a great deal about whisky, even as an enthusiast.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 19 September 2023
- spc354593 contributionsFinally at the Caol Ila DistilleryWe took public transportation from Port Ellen, and got dropped off about a mile away from the distillery. I t was a pleasant hike. We did not take the tour, but did our tastings at the bar and enjoyed the pleasant views through the glass wall facing the water. Very nice friendly people with good advice for tastings and purchases. I would certainly recommend.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 30 November 2023
- Alexander WoywodtLancaster, United Kingdom345 contributionsCask strength whisky tastingI visited in January 2024 for a smoke and peat tasting experience. Lovely atmosphere, one other visitor from Japan with whom I shared my oatcakes so that we did not have to drink on empty stomach. Tasted five whiskies that are artisanal Caol Ila so not in the shops. Very nice experience. Would have liked to learn more about Caol IlaVisited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 January 2024
- Matthew H5 contributionsCaol Ila Warehouse TastingI had never had a Caol Ila before this tasting, but I was blown away both by the tasting, the customer service, and the beautiful views from the Caol Ila tasting room/shop. We stopped at eight of the Islay distilleries and had some really wonderful experiences, but Phoebe and Caol Ila went above and beyond any other stop we made to make our Caol Ila visit and tasting extra special. My brother and I were visiting for our 30th and 40th Birthday and nowhere we visited made us feel as special or as celebrated as Phoebe and Caol Ila did for our birthday. Between the kindness and customer service combined with the quality drams at our tasting, Phoebe has made a lifelong Caol Ila fan out of me!Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 May 2024
- Marie SZurich, Switzerland49 contributionsVery interesting tour and very nice and clean distilleryWe very much liked the tour. The process of making whiskey was perfectly explained and we also liked very much the video about the history. The visitor center is really pretty and we bought some whiskey and branded souvenirs. The bar is cosy and welcoming. All staff on the whole site was very friendly. We absolutely recommend the visit and the flavor journey tour.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 May 2024
- Niel C1 contributionWonderful and very informative experienceThe entire experience was wonderful esp. our tour guide Alisha was fantastic and fun. The distillery was immaculate and Alisha took the time to walk us thru all the steps and sections with detailed explanations and funny stories. A must for lovers of Islay single malt Whiskies.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 June 2024
- Kiana ELondon, United Kingdom11 contributionsVery helpful welcome staffSo I messed up with this one. I booked a tour for our group of 6, however when we arrived I realised I had booked it for the following day, which we already had plans for. However the team member on the welcome desk was brilliant and swapped us to a tasting session which was 30 mins later. This was no problem as there was a bar, with some food and drinks. Some of the group ordered teas, coffee and cake and some ordered pies. The pie did take a long time and didn't end up being severed until after the tasting which was a bit disappointing. This is a johnnie walker distillery so has all the glitz and glam you would expect, although not one of its better ones.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 24 August 2024
- TwogiantsBeach Haven, New Jersey91 contributionsModern and ClassyThis is a modern, forward thinking distillery and stands in contrast to some of the others I have visited. The tour is very professional and well done - obviously being part of a huge corporate conglomerate has its advantages as they can afford to spend the money on marketing and presentation. The facilities are very nice and they allowed us to just sit and visit when we were through with our tasting at a table overlooking the water. It was nice to not be rushed and get to know some new people.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 4 September 2024

Visited our last day on the island. Tour booked for spirit of smoke. On the whole, nice tasting. Informative host helped.
As much as the new distillery shop looked huge in comparison to the old one, it's lost character and warmth, much more corporate modern with the "jazz music" playing in the background.
As a whisky enthusiast, we see straight through that BS and we as the end consumer pay for it one way or the other.
This has been my holy grail for many years to visit and it was slightly disappointing.
Don't miss the opportunity to go out near the sea and see Jura from a far. Stunning view

At the time of my tour the Distillery was in silent season. We were guided around by Charlie who was very informative on all information about the distillery from its opening until present day production. Loads of information about all the processes used to make whisky. Charlie made the tour with her friendly and bubbly character. After the tour we had a tasting of three whisky’s and she knew all about them. Cant fault her for her knowledge of the industry. The revamped visitor centre is very open planned and well laid out. There is a shop area, bar area and down some stairs the tasting area where you get a panoramic view out to sea and to Jura. I can’t recommend this tour enough.

Missed slot for tour of distillery. Found the coffee shop, reception, toilets, and product on sale of even greater interest than the mysterious way of making whisky. Fresh off the ferry, at Port Askaig, this is the first visitor attraction you will come upon, on Islay. Don't pass it by. Get rested for more exploring, and use the coffee shop as we did, relaxing, refreshments, and souvenirs. Plus a fantastic view to the Paps of Jura ( cloud permitting).

Hi, can anyone tell me what time the tours run at Caol Ila as I am trying to schedule a day and visit Bunnahabain too. Interested in the Distillery Tour and Cask Strength Experience.
Thanks!

I suggest you contact the distillery directly. My tour was a custom booked one.

What are the prices like for bottles in the shop compared to online or on the high street?
Are samples available to try (or buy)?
Thanks in advance!

For Caol Ila in particular, the store had some sizes, styles, and even a combination packs that I had not seen before in stores.
