In September I was lucky enough to have a tour with Hugh. it was one of the highlights of my trip to Lewis, and actually to Scotland. He spoiled me for all other tour guides I'm afraid....
He was extremely knowledgeable about local history, culture, and ..well the land. I learned so much, saw a great deal and this was all with one of the most friendly and personable people I have had the pleasure to do a tour with. If you can't tell --- I really really enjoyed my tour!
This is where Peter May's Isle of Lewis books were/are set. I would recommend reading these before or after going on the tour!
We went to the Butt of Lewis, the White houses, the Black house, Dun Carloway - the Broch, and the Calanais stones. There is still so much to see, and I will be back and I will definitely take a tour from Hugh again! This was all in a small passenger van with Hugh's commentary throughout. He was able to adapt to our interests as we went. He clearly loves this place and its people.
I can't recommend this highly enough!
If you are in a wheelchair, you may not always be able to get out to see things, but it was worth the trip. If you are mobile you will get more out of a tour with Hugh, or maybe you'll get different things out of it may be a more accurate way to put it.
