About
We are a small family run local tour business located in Stornoway on the Isle Of Lewis. At Hebridean Isle Tours we run 3 tours, one of the Isle of Lewis, one of the Isle of Harris and one to Uig and Great Bernera, each tour is priced at £90 per person, payable on the day. We also take you places off the beaten track, giving you the best opportunity to explore the island. Hugh or Gordon, your local guides, will share with you their local knowledge and also some of the local traditions whilst you sit back and relax. Although the seasons and scenery change throughout the year the beauty remains, we are here to meet you from your accommodation, from the ferry terminal or collection from the airport if it’s a flying visit. So just sit back, relax, have a laugh and get the ‘craic’.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I'm not great at writing reviews... even when I think I'm going to do it straight away, I struggle with capturing my immediate feelings. But I spent two days touring with Hugh in late April 2019, & it has resonated with me every day since. As an independent traveller, especially a woman on your own, you really have to lean out there & trust the people you book with. Hugh was super on email, giving me so many tips in my planning stages well before I got to the Outer Hebrides. It was a dream for my whole adulthood to visit these phenomenal isles. Hugh showed me so many amazing places, told great stories about the history of the isles, gave me beautiful cultural & local insights, handled my first ever 'Ceilidh' hangover with kindness & humour, & shared personal stories. I never would have gotten any of that from some bus tour from the mainland. On one of those days, we saw more dogs than people - now that is a magical place! Hanging on my wall is my beautiful 'Steornabhagh - Eilean Leodhais' poster... & it reminds me every day, I've been to one of the most wonderful places in the world... & a really neat guy called Hugh showed me around like we had known one another for years!!

Gordon was a "fill in" as Hugh was busy with other guests, and GORDON WAS PERFECT! We totally loved the day, his stories and the stops. He helped us to understand the area and its people. When he learned that one of us was a student of Stevenson lighthouse history, he detoured to visit one. We can't thank him enough for a fantastic day!

In September I was lucky enough to have a tour with Hugh. it was one of the highlights of my trip to Lewis, and actually to Scotland. He spoiled me for all other tour guides I'm afraid....

He was extremely knowledgeable about local history, culture, and ..well the land. I learned so much, saw a great deal and this was all with one of the most friendly and personable people I have had the pleasure to do a tour with. If you can't tell --- I really really enjoyed my tour!

This is where Peter May's Isle of Lewis books were/are set. I would recommend reading these before or after going on the tour!

We went to the Butt of Lewis, the White houses, the Black house, Dun Carloway - the Broch, and the Calanais stones. There is still so much to see, and I will be back and I will definitely take a tour from Hugh again! This was all in a small passenger van with Hugh's commentary throughout. He was able to adapt to our interests as we went. He clearly loves this place and its people.

I can't recommend this highly enough!

If you are in a wheelchair, you may not always be able to get out to see things, but it was worth the trip. If you are mobile you will get more out of a tour with Hugh, or maybe you'll get different things out of it may be a more accurate way to put it.

In September 2019 I did three tours with Hugh the Lewis, the Harris and the Uig and Great Bernera Tours. All of them were fantastic. If you do not have a car this is the best way to explore the Islands. There are buses but there are long waits in between and this makes visiting more than one place properly in a day tricky ie the Blackhouse at Gearranan. Also you would not get to see the beautiful places off the beaten track where the buses do not go. We were out between 5 and 6 hours on each tour and having pretty good weather helped.Hugh had a nice little people carrier and the most people I had on my tours was four.Hugh was an excellent guide. He was informative, friendly, fun and with lots of lovely stories of his life in Stornoway.I definitely want to go back to Stornoway again and I would do Hughs tours again for sure.

Hugh is an energetic , enthusiastic guide of these islands . He took us on a six hour tour of Lewis , we all learnt so much along the way . I really enjoyed his personal stories and his understated manner . As I said at the end of the day, I’ve gone tours in many places in the world but his would be the best . I’d arranged this day without my friend’s knowledge and was a bit worried but there was no need, we both loved our day out in Hugh’s company and the rest of the group.
Absolutely marvellous and completely worth every penny. Thank you .

The ideal tour for anyone who wants experience the island’s history, to see the rippled rock- formations at the Butt of Lewis encircled by diving and soaring seabirds, the gentle white sands at the Port of Ness washed by turquoise waves, be dwarfed by Scotland ‘s largest standing stone, feel and smell the peaty air within a blackhouse and feel the mystery of the Clach an croc stone circle, the stones which seem like human beings. This is all offered by Hugh, who knows the island like the back of his hand and shares it generously with visitors in a kind and professional manner. We also enjoyed the user- friendly registration via the website. We will cherish the memories of this wonderful day.

We - 7 book club members from Sweden - have read Peter May´s The Lewis Trilogy and we wanted to follow in police detective Fin Macleod´s footsteps. We got in touch with Visit Scotland Stornoway and they recommended us to contact Hebridean Isle Tours and Hugh Barron.
We went arround for 2 days on beautiful Lewis and Harris and our fantastic local guide and driver, Hugh, told us everything about the landscape, the peat, the blackhouses, the people and of course he was also connecting to the books all the time! Besides his great knowledge of the isles he was very humorous and relaxed - and a good driver! He really helped to make our days on The Hebrides into memories of our lives!
The weather: Sunny and no wind!

An amazing day!! We booked our tour with Hugh and received quick and clear communication with details on itinerary, payment, meeting place, etc. Hugh even sent a photo of his vehicle so we could find him easily on the pier. Hugh is a wonderful and lively guide, with great stories, depth of knowledge and love for his country that just shines through. The spots visited were breathtaking, particularly the Lighthouse, and Hugh gave us plenty of time in each location to explore, take photos and ask questions. Heard from the group in the second van, Gordon, was friendly and informative and they all loved his stories.

I cannot say enough good things about Hebridean Isle Tours! I had never visited the Isles of Lewis or Harris before and stumbled upon the Hebridean Isle Tours website. I read the description of each of the three tours offered. They all sounded so interesting that I booked all three! And I am so glad I did! Each of the tours is packed full of beautiful sights: sandy beaches, historic monuments dating back hundreds and even thousands of years, and breath taking views of rolling craggy hills covered in heather. Each tour is packed with so many unique and valuable experiences, I feel very fortunate that I was able to participate in all three and take in all that Lewis and Harris have to offer.

Hugh was exceptionally accommodating throughout all three tours, picking me up each day from my hotel and dropping me off at locations of my choosing in Stornoway. He is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of island life and history, and is a genuinely kind soul! In addition, Hugh was able to provide great recommendations regarding restaurants, a car hire agency, and other activities to explore after the tours. Each of the other activities I did at Hugh’s recommendation were also wonderful experiences that I would not have known about otherwise. These tours were truly the highlight of my trip and this small family business is truly an asset to the islands! If you have the time and availability to participate in more than one tour, I highly recommend it! Five stars aren’t nearly enough!
