Enjoy a guided tour of 12 furnished rooms in this 17th century Castle. Ghosts and villains, Jacobites and high fashion, the story begins in 1628 when the Earl of Mar built Mar Castle as his Highland hunting lodge. Associated with all 3 Jacobite uprisings, the castle was burned by the infamous Jacobite, the Black Colonel, and was the base for the Earl of Mar as he planned the 1715 uprising. After the 1745 rebellion, it was a garrison for Hanoverian soldiers stationed there to make sure that no-one dared break the law and wear tartan or carry weapons. In the 20th century, the castle was home to American fashion journalist, Editor of Harper's Bazaar and wife of the Chief of Clan Farquharson, who decorated the rooms in her signature Schiaparelli pink. English and German audio guides and tours with friendly local guides who enjoy sharing their knowledge and stories of the area. There are hidden teddy bears for the children to count as well as a small gift shop which also sells teas, coffees and hot chocolate.

Nice to visit if your into a castle tour. More of a modern style furnished building if you'd like to visit. Just take a pic of outside and lovely purple weeds that are pretty.

An interesting castle in a beautiful location. Enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide, lots to see inside and some really interesting rooms, including 18th century graffiti carved into some window frames. The guided tour is a must and then you could easily spend the same time...More

I mean, really, Scotland is full of them. If you are in the area, this is a neat little castle to visit.

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to write a review. It is greatly appreciated by the local community who look after the Castle and are raising money towards the restoration and upgrading of this important A-listed building.

Worth a visit to see the farqharsons castle as it was in the 50's. It doesn't take long to get around the 12 rooms on show. Thought the entrance fee was atad high at 8.50 each.More

This is an interesting castle as the local people clubbed together to buy it. They now have the challenge of maintaining it! A local person gave a guided tour and was very informative. The rooms are furnished with many original items from the previous family...More

Thank you so much for you review, much appreciated. (We have the Castle on a 50 year reapiareing lease from Invercauld Estate and are responsible for repair, upkeep and maintenance - expensive!)

I’m quite certain you don’t have to pay if you don’t go inside. The grounds are not gated so you could have a nice roam around easily.
