Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I cannot recommend Jura Island Tours enough. Alex provided so much information about the island, and took us to places that we would not have found ourselves.

Alex treated us to a wonderful day excursion around Jura, picking us up from the ferry at 10am and dropping us back at 5.30pm. We wound our way up to the top of the island stopping to see sites, places and scenes of interest eg the Jura Distillery, the craft and gift shops, one or two cemeteries, villages and the church with a photo exhibition of local life. Alex had so much knowledge to share of Jura, it’s people, natural history and culture and he imparted this with humour and consideration. Among many fantastic aspects to the day, the highlights were the wildlife “spots”! Plenty of fine red deer, grey seals, hen harriers, buzzards, even a pair of short-eared owls as well as numerous small birds. Nothing was too much trouble for him, stopping happily when we wanted to take photos. If you go on this tour, take Tea on the Beach, organised by enterprising young people. Thank you Alex, a magical tour that will live long in the memory.

Wonderful guided tour of this stunning island gem. Alex collected us from the ferry in his and took us on a very interesting tour of Jura (Deer Island) where we saw many of the eponymous deer in a variety of locations, and other wildlife including the unusual Jacob's sheep (gorgeous wee lambs) and birds of prey. He told us many historical facts and tales of the people, always happy to allow us to take as many photos as we wanted.
Time for a filling lunch at the friendly Antlers café sustained us for a packed afternoon of beach, Jura distillery, Lussa Gin Distillery, flint hunting and opportunity to take numerous photos of the beautiful scenery, including the famous Paps and more.
If you want to let an experienced and knowledgeable guide to take the strain of driving, leave your car at Port Askaig, and enjoy this must do way to experience the best of beautiful Jura.

Lovely day with Alex touring Jura, wonderful views, wildlife and local history. We fitted in a relaxed lunch in the sun - sitting outside in April no less - and a lovely trip to the far reaches of the island to the wonderful Lussa gin (also highly recommended)
It was fantastic not to have to drive for a day and hand over the reins to Alex. Definitely recommend booking a day's tour with Alex, a day full of history, wonderful views and also laughs and deer a plenty.

Hanging out with Alex and listening to his wealth of knowledge about the island. He spent the entire day with us and made sure before hand to find out about me and my interests. My ancestors are from the area. Alex reviewed my research information, found records and took me to see my families graveyard. He made our trip! We will visit with him again!

We don’t write many reviews but the outstanding quality of Alex’s tour today means that we feel compelled to do so. First in order to give Alex the credit that he so richly deserves, but second to encourage other folks to enrich their visit to Jura in such an amazing way.
Reflecting on the day on our way back to Islay on the ferry we felt that the reasons that this tour was so exceptionally good were two-fold. First, Alex took the time to really understand what we were trying to get out of the day. Second, Alex is such an integral part of the Jura community that he is uniquely qualified to be a Jura guide. Probably not an exaggeration to say that he knows almost everyone & everything about the island that is his family home, and that he so passionately cares about. We felt truly privileged to spend time in his company & now feel we know so much more about the history, the wildlife, the current issues, the community, the businesses, the characters, the geology etc etc etc
Alex also presents all the information in such an engaging & interesting way - we could have talked with him for hours more.
We simply cannot recommend this tour more highly.

When friends ask me about the highlight of our recent trip to Scotland and the islands of Islay and Jura, our day with Alex comes to mind. Within minutes of meeting up with him he was pointing out sea eagles and other wild life - including some magnificent stags and their harems.
Alex’s tour included lots of local history, as much of the geography as we could safely drive to, two stops at island distilleries (one of them produces gin!) and a peaceful few minutes at an idyllic spot where a river meets the sea.
The island is a wild and wonderful place and seeing it through Alex’s eyes made it the highlight of our trip. Alex’s abiding love for the island and his knowledge of its history makes a tour of Jura with him one for the memory books.

We had a fantastic day touring around Jura on Alex's bus. The tour took us to every corner of the island, and we heard and saw lots about the history and culture of this wonderful place. Amazing scenery and wildlife. Alex knows so much and shares his knowledge generously. Best way to see lots of the island before buying the obligatory bottle of Jura whisky to head home with...

Alex is a wonderful guide who gave us a richly detailed tour of the Island's history, community, wildlife, and culture. He clearly loves the place and that comes through in his tour, as he takes you to all of his favorite places. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the founding of Craighouse, the crofting way of life, emigration, and changes over time. Alex is flexible, funny and poetic, and the island is incredibly beautiful. It was truly a wonderful day. Highly recommend. Note: don't bother taking your car across to Jura on the ferry -- Alex will pick you up at the ferry terminal.

I have traced a branch of my family tree back to Buie family from Jura. I wonder if there might be points of interest or cemeteries that I may further research the Buie name.
Thank you.

Hi Penny
There are a few sites of interest,
several standing stones, three burial
grounds and the ruined village of
An Carn although it does take a fair
effort to get to this site.
We see everything on the bus tour
except the ruined village and of course
lots of info on the history of jura.
