About
This site is currently closed as a precautionary measure while we undertake site inspections. We apologise for any inconvenience. Situated on the Isle of Bute, Rothesay Castles dates back to the early 13th century and is remarkably well preserved in spite of its age. Built by the Stewart family to defend against invading Norwegian fleets, Rothesay’s immense circular curtain wall makes it unique in Scotland. In 1230 it survived a three-day siege by King Haakon IV of Norway which precipitated the castle’s fortification with four round towers. It became a royal residence soon after and was later occupied by Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence and served as a base for Cromwell’s troops in the late 17th century. The grandiose great hall was restored by a Marquess of Bute in 1900 which now contains informative interpretive display which illuminate the history of the castle and its inhabitants.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Disappointed to find this castle closed. It is in the middle of the town of Rothesay so exterior views of it are easily seen from outside the railings so not too bad that it was closed. However, no photo opportunities with all the scaffolding up. Shame! it really is a special castle.

On our first full day of a 1 week trip to Bute, based in Rothesay, we had spent a couple of hours driving round in the rain familiarising ourselves with the sights further afield on the island which we would explore more fully on drier days. Back in Rothesay the castle is a formidable sign of the islands past.

As we had a dog with us and they are not allowed into the covered/roofed areas we decided against a visit but explored and viewed solely from the streets around the moat.

A visit we had to do while in Rothesay. 2 min walk from our lunch cafeteria and great to see in the middle of the town centre. Run by historic Scotland so good if you’re members

The staff there are so lovely and helpful. Walking around was very interesting and you learn so much. There is an underground pit prison you can climb down and there also lots of different levels you can walk up to view the whole area. Definitely worth a visit.

A great visit for kids because just about everything you can see is kid friendly. The castle grounds can be tramped on, the foundations inside the walls can be sat on or jumped from, and the history is just as accessible. And you can even climb down into a small dungeon.

In the middle of the town centre. Easy access but make sure to check the opening hours. Beautiful with the water surronding it!

This is an interesting visit bu tit does not take long as it is rather ruined. You can not climb the walls and the display panels are minimal. The church inside is a ruined shell and the display panels could have been clearer. £6 seemed quite a lot of money for a visit which did not take long.

We stay on the island often but have not visited the castle before, although it’s small it was very interesting and certainly not expensive, concessions available.
There is a shop onsite which is very very reasonably priced got some lovely items from here.

Beautiful Castle Ruins in a beautiful quaint island town. Wish I could have spent more time here. Castle has a moat around it which my boys loved.
