About
The Talyllyn Railway is a historic narrow gauge steam railway, being the Worlds First preserved Railway!. Running continously since 1865, our track runs for 7.25miles from Tywyn to Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol through unspoilt Snowdonia. Operated by a dedicated group of Volunteers, the railway carries passengers along the same route their Victorian ancestors would have done. Retrace the quarrymans journey into the hills to mine slate. Our principle station at Tywyn is also home to the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum, Railway Shop and King's Licensed Cafe & Bistro. A large carpark is available close to the station. The line passes the delightful Dolgoch Falls and there are excellent forest walks at Nant Gwernol. We offer a great day out for all the family, allow 4 hours for a round trip, visit to the museum and something to eat!. Groups receive a discount when booked in advance.

    Enjoyable trip
Large car park across the road from station, reasonable charge, 4 hours should be enough. Check timetable as trains vary per season. Refreshments served at the station which may be taken on board. Spent enjoyable afternoon glimpsing waterfalls. Stopped a couple of times, including Abergynolwyn Station where refreshments / toilet also available. Staff were very friendly and thorough ensuring all doors were secured correctly.
Thank you for kind and helpful review, much appreciated. We hope to see you again soon.

Beautiful setting for classic steam trains
I visited on a quiet Wednesday and the weather was superb showing off the line at its very best. Beautiful views all along and the gentle steam from the loco Dolgoch. Highly recommended if you like classic Welsh scenery or steam or both. Nice cafe at Tywyn wharf reasonably priced. Might benefit from a small play area for kids
With very many thanks for lovely review, much appreciated, glad you enjoyed. If you have the chance to return, we have a play park below Abergynolwyn station, you may well find members of the train crew on the slide. Hope to see you again.

    Worthy of a visit
Run by volunteers who no doubt have a passion for narrow gauge steam engines, this is a worth while day out. A tad expensive for what it is (£26 for adults and £5 for a dog), it does give a great feel for bygone times. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable and it was pleasing to see a new generation of train enthusiasts working the rolling stock There are a number of hop on hop off stops with some short walks into the hills. Cafes at both ends of the line which do provide reasonable priced hot and cold food.
With very many thanks for taking the time to leave a review, much appreciated, glad you enjoyed your visit and hope you had the chance to make a full day of it.

    Good
We decided to visit this place as we weren't overly too far away. The train station is old and has a small museum in which is free and nice to have a walk around. There is a little gift shop in the building. They have diesel and steam trains running. The journey isn't too bad and there are a few stops along the route. One of the stops you can access a waterfall and another there is a small cafe. The staff were friendly. They had someone dressed up as an easter bunny at one of the stops giving out eggs. The train carriages were nice.
Many thanks for taking time to leave a review, we are glad you enjoyed your visit and hope to welcome you back again soon.

Amazing day. We will come back!
We had an amazing day here at the railway. It is definitely worth a visit when in the area and I would say also worth coming to Wales for. We were in the first train of the day which was very well kept and staffed with very friendly and knowledgeable staff (all the trains we were on were like this). It’s very unique to be on a narrow gauge railway like this and we loved it. The engines themselves are also very well kept and sound and look lovely. Before the train we had breakfast in the cafe which was pretty good (the Talyllyn app has the menu so you can choose on the way over). We then did a couple of walks at the falls and the final station which were lovely, the falls especially had great scenery. The app has several suggested walks for each stop. There’s also a treasure hunt in the app which is great for children to learn and explore. After the return journey we went to the museum which had a lot of interesting information and some interactive activities too. Overall we had an amazing day and will definitely be back!
With very many thanks for such a lovely review, much appreciated, we are delighted you enjoyed your time with us and look forward to seeing you again.

Absolutely fantastic apart from Tywyn Town council’s approach to parking
It’s a pity that the Tywyn town council do not adequately support their local attractions. On arriving at the Cambrian Road car park, used by the Talyllyn Railway, the ticket machine was ‘Out of Order’. This forced the use of PaybyPhone which levied a 30p (15%) service charge; a charge that only becomes apparent on final payment. This is sharp practice and reduces a five star experience with the railway to a four star experience. Shame on you Tywyn town council for not adequately maintaining your parking machines and forcing a surprising additional payment on the hard pressed tourist.
Thank you for taking time to leave us a great review, we are sorry you such trouble and frustration with the council car park, which sadly is out of our control,. We hope you enjoyed the time you spent with us and hope you can join us again.

Very enjoyable train ride into the past!
I traveled on the Talyllyn on the 7th June with a friend and her 10 year old son. We joined the train at Rhydyronen [more of which later] and did a return trip to Nantgwernol. The journey was a picturesque ride into the past. Steam loco's, tiny stations and friendly staff. J [ 10 year old train enthusiast!] was allowed to ride in the Guards Van with the Conductor and his enthusiastic apprentice! It was a rather cramped but enjoyable experience. We had a problem finding the station at Rhydyronen to the point were we almost missed the train! There are no signs no real pathway and the line is hidden from the road by foliage. The Railway needs to put a sign on the single track road where a gate gives access to the station. Parking is virtually non existent but with some creative shunting I managed to get the car into a space which didn't block the road! Pay the Talyllyn a visit, its a great family experience!
Thank you for lovely feedback and useful comments about signs at Rhydyronen, they have been passed on to our facilities manager to see if anything possible with Highways Authority. Really glad you enjoyed your trip andtime with us, we hope to welcome you back again soon.

Old world values of friendship and service
Firstly it was so easy to book online and such a surprise when we arrived in the Booking Office at Tywyn Wharf station to be greeted by name by the friendly Receptionist. We had a few minutes to wait before the little train left on its 7 mile journey to Nant Gwernal and my wife went to look at the locomotive and seeing her interest she was invited onto the footplate and the driver took a photograph. She explained that she was the driver for the day. We decided to upgrade to First Class in one of the wonderfully recreated new carriages for a £10 supplement. Again this was simplicity itself and one of the guards - another young woman, brought us our First Class tickets. The other guard was cheerful and very friendly chatting to us as time allowed and he kept us well informed of what was happening as we journeyed on. On the was back from Nant Gwernal the train stopped at Abergynolwyn where we had reserved a table in the cafe for a Cream Tea. We were greeted on the platform by the most avuncular character who was full of smiles and bonhomie. The scones were warm and when we returned to the train we opted for the saloon carriage where the large windows allowed us to see the fabulous views of the mountains and the valleys. After two and a half hours we arrived back in Tywyn where the platform staff were just as friendly as everyone else we encountered on this visit. In the Refreshment Room at Tywyn the young man serving behind the counter enquired about whether we had enjoyed the experience. Again excellence in interpersonal skills. All in all a marvellous few hours spent in the company of mainly volunteers who bring their commitment and enthusiasm to every moment of their day and all the customers benefit accordingly. A real ‘family’ feel - almost a single of a bygone age.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review, your comments will be greatly appreciated by our volunteers and staff. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Exceptional steam train - 1st class
Outstanding steam train experience. We had the first class carriage which was really nice having 6 comfortable seats to ourselves. We also had the picnic hamper which had nice sandwiches and sausage roles. Cafes at either end of the line were really good and all the staff were really friendly.
With very many thanks for your lovely comments, much appreciated, we hope to welcome you back again soon.

Breath taking views and a cute railway!
My husband and I haven't visited in ages, so we decided to hop on an early train to Tywyn to hop on the Tal Y Llyn. We arrived in plenty of time, so decided to have breakfast which was delicious! The views on this trip are simply stunning. We managed a walk up to Abergynolwyn before heading back on the train. The staff were so polite and helpful, which always makes for a better experience. Sadly, the train over ran which meant we couldn't look at the gin/cider range. We'll just have to come again though!
With very many thanks for your lovely review, we are delighted that you enjoyed your day, we hope you can return for gin and cider soon and see us again.

I first visited the Talyllyn Railway in 1965 and have been back many times since. It operates steam locomotives and vintage coaches in one of the most beautiful locations. The view of the Afon Fathew as the train climbs up the valley is one of the loveliest of any railway in the UK.
The lost recent visit was the only one since opening under Covid 19 restrictions. The railway has applied signage and distancing best practice well and the whole trip felt well organised and secure. I particularly enjoyed having a dedicated compartment for the round trip.
The only downside of the current operation is that you must travel up and return on the same train. Meaning that you cannot take advantage of the superb hill walking available from the upper stations (unless you miss part of the journey). An excuse to return to this historic and welcoming attraction.

We are members and would highly recommend membership to anyone looking to travel on the train more than once a year. Our visit was very pleasant, booking on the last train of the day and enjoying a slice of wonderful cake at the station while the children played in the railway themed park. Looking forward to future non covid times when we will be able to get on and of the train at the stops such as Dolgoch falls.

Started the day with a standard guage breakfast in the station cafe before travelling on the 10:30am train. Great views and relaxing journey. Returned to have lunch in cafe before back on 2.05pm train. Seen more great scenes which I had missed on the first journey. Great day. All staff, train and cafe so helpful and friendly and fully compliant with Covid restrictions. Would I go back again. Yes and did a few weeks later. Another great day plus cream tea at Abergynolwyn. Will be back again. As I was travelling alone on both days I was given 50% discount on trains. Thank you Talyllyn Railway.

We pre booked an open air carriage for 2, which, even in poor weather, was most enjoyable. Due to COVID constraints you could not get off the train and catch the next one, but there was a 20 minute break for a stretch of the legs and refreshments at one of the stations. The scenery on the journey was stunning. All in all a great way to spend a couple of hours.

This was a family outing (all adults) booked as birthday treat for my elderly mother; it was a lovely way to get out and see the countryside for someone who isn't very mobile. Everyone was friendly and helpful, we felt very safe in our own compartment, the ride was a delight, and the steam engine made her very nostalgic. We would highly recommend booking the cream tea at Abergynolwyn too - a real treat!

We initially only went to use the cafe for breakfast (which was delicious and great value by the way!). While we eating breakfast we loved the look of the trains and enquired at the desk if there was availability - thankfully for us there was! The covid-19 restrictions were still in place so it was necessary to book a compartment as opposed to the usual individual tickets. The journey out and back took in rthe region of 2 and half hours so was good value for money in our opinion. The track goes through some beautiful scenery and its great stopping at the little stations. All the staff very friendly and helpful. Would definitely do it again if in Tywyn. The cafe is also highly recommended!

We pre booked a trip on this narrow gauge steam railway (advised). Parking is opposite station at Tywyn for a small charge. All the staff were welcoming, friendly and very knowledgeable. Everything felt 100% Covid safe and was well organised. The cafe was a bit busy but got something to eat and drink and ate outdoors but undercover. Great trip for nostalgic oldies like me or for kids and families.

This was a trip for my husband’s birthday and was a really good day. We decided to book the 11am train and have breakfast in the station cafe first. What a good breakfast! Veggie option available too. We watched as the train was thoroughly cleaned before we left and as all compartments are individually screened we felt very safe. The history of the railway is told in various displays and the small museum is well worth a visit. The shop has lots to offer too. The train ride itself is very pretty and the noise of the train whistle is very nostalgic. A stop at the tea shop on the way back for a nice piece of cake finished the day nicely. Recommend this as a perfect day out.

A very enjoyable afternoon on the Talyllyn. They took great care to ensure Covid safe operation with screens provided between compartments and frequent cleaning of surfaces likely to be touched. . We had ordered the cream tea which was waiting for us at the stop in Abergynolwyn avoiding joining the queue. The nice touch was the contact with the office after placing the order asking us whether we wanted Tea,Coffee or fruit drink.. The ground floor of the museum had only recent opened and we booked a visit to that on the same day.

A fabulous trip on an open carriage through lovely views. Bought back childhood memories with the smell of the stream and the noise . Such a memorable day out for all ages. Prebooked due to covid and was happy to pay the £70 for 5 adults as these trains need to be supported and kept on the tracks. Lovely cafe on the way for coffee and cake
