We came across Dan and his company via a facebook foraging group. He had advertised his Foraging courses and we instantly wanted to take part in the Coastal Foraging course. We met in Pembrokeshire on the coast at a beautiful and wild beach with a huge expanse of sand and rocks - the perfect place to find wild seafood. Dan was incredibly informative and shared his knowledge with us in an interesting and engaging way. From the get go, we were foraging plants and leaves in hedgerows, and learning about the differences between edibles and non edibles. Once on the beach, we headed for the rocks with our nets to find prawns and crab followed by the beach at low tide to pick shellfish such as cockles, clams and mussels. We picked everything he had promised and then had an amazing cook up with a wood fire and watched the sunset. The food was amazing and I would have expected to eat it in a restaurant, I would never have known it was foraged if I hadn't picked it myself! Excellent value for money. Highly recommend any adventure with Dan and Black Rock Outdoor Company.

We booked Dan to take our family including three young children out for a Rockpool Safari. We aren’t that experienced in outdoor activities as a family and so it was something we researched beforehand. Dan has great reviews and so we went for it with a booking. As with anything, you just never know until you get there. Dan was on time and responsive and helpful, and immediately engaged the children with a “competition”. They were hooked and intently listened to everything he had to say about our surroundings. Pendine Beach is gorgeous and Dan is so incredibly knowledgeable! He clearly has a passion for what he does, and he is patient, fun and has his eyes on the safety of all in the group. We are so thankful to have found Dan to help us get out and about, and we will definitely be booking again for our next West Wales vacation. Once you meet Dan, you will easily see that he could talk about nature, wildlife and creatures for days on end. If you love the outdoors, hire this lovely young man to have a fun day exploring!

Well we booked a Rock Pool Safari and although it tipped it down we would do it all again...even in the rain!. We took our 6 year old and 2 year old. Dan had excellent knowledge and was one step a head meeting us with nets, buckets and a fish tank so we could re-visit the bigger items. It was very personal rock pooling which meant we gained very specific one to one attention. We felt safe out with Dan among the rocks and learn so much. Dan was extremely attentive even to the needs our 2 year old and ensuring she was included and considering the rain Dan did a fab job. Will be booking something again next time we visit, maybe bushcraft!

What an amazing day we had with Dan as a really great foraging guide. Dan is not only knowledgeable about plants, seafood etc, he imparts his knowledge with great enthusiasm, clarity and generosity. We liked very much his ethical approach to sustainability.
The day began on the north side of Tenby, stopping to look at a diversity of readily available sources of food, in leaf form, seed form or even flower form; some were of nutritional or medicinal interest, others had a more practical use or aesthetic use. Dan also told stories related to folklore and traditions which we enjoyed listening to.
The second part of our journey took us onto the beach and this opened up a world of sea life we had not imagined existed in Wales!
The experience culminated in a delicious tasting of morning gathered salad of leafs, seeds and flowers followed by beach cooked clams, shell clams, cockles, shrimps and samphire. A completely delectable treat!
Our foraging day was simply magical. I cannot find a more telling word to describe our experience.

We had an informative, interesting and fun afternoon with Dan. He was able to engage with the four kids (aged 8-11) with ease and kept their interest throughout the session. He is very knowledgeable about nature, conservation and taught them (and the adults) loads. It was worth it in every way.

My wife and I had a fantastic day coastal foraging with Black Rock Outdoor. Dan, our guide, was flexible and communicative during the booking process. In the field he was friendly and knowledgeable. Ensuring our group sustainably foraged the raw ingredients, which he then prep for us over a fire on a stunning beach. I would highly recommend this experience for a day out-You will come away having learnt something and a delicious meal!

We arranged a bushcraft session with Dan for my son’s 7th birthday and it was fantastic.
He led the group of kids into the forest teaching them about edible and not so edible wild plants keeping them engaged the whole way. When we arrived at the camp base he taught them about building dens - they then set off on their task to build a waterproof A frame den out of only natural materials - they loved this teamwork challenge and especially loved testing it by pouring water over the top. They then tried getting sparks with a steel striker - and then with a battery! They were amazed. We finished by collecting sticks to light a big camp fire to toast marshmallows.
It was the perfect outdoors birthday party in nature. Dan is so knowledgeable and all the grown ups learnt a lot too!

We had a really fantastic morning with Dan on Pendine beach doing the rockpool safari. Dan's knowledge was amazing and we all learnt so much. The kids were completely enthralled the entire time with all the little creatures, seaweed and rocks. There was also 10 adults who also really enjoyed it, so it is a good experience for all ages. Dan was also very accommodating with the start time which was really helpful. Would definitely recommend.
