This is an extraordinary castle - built by a royal welsh dynasty in the 13th century it's magnificently siited with long views over the lush welsh countryside within walking distance of Welshpool. It has repeatedly been renovated over the centuries and one can see why. The deer park is full of deer, the gardens are superlative with contrasting formal and... More

We visited this spot for a brief afternoon coffee and wander about the gardens. The coffee was fine, but the cakes offering was looking a bit thin by the time we got there late in the day in the holiday season. The gardens were lovely and the views from some points of the surrounding areas are great - perhaps most... More

We came here on New Year's day as knew the castle would be open, a bonus as it was the only day it was until the spring. The red sandstone castle is perfectly placed with great views of the Severn valley below. The castle's interior is nice and less audacious than many other stately homes. It was nice decorated for... We drove by here on Christmas Eve. The castle itself wasn't open as it was closed for the Christmas break but tea rooms, shop & gardens all open. The grounds are breath taking with the most beautiful & stunning views. Would love to return in the summer. Staff seemed happy & friendly. We didn't eat in the tea room but... More

Driving through the area on the day before Christmas Eve we had what we thought was a brilliant idea. It was a dreadful wet and windy day and what could be a better venue for a cheery festive lunch than in an old castle? Beautiful ancient building, log fires, Christmas tree and decorations all sprang to mind. We had visited... More

It was a pleasure to find the Castle open one chilly Wednesday in December. The drive up from the road is nice and you can spot deer in the park. The Castle itself had only limited numbers of rooms open, but with the knowlegeable room stewards that did not seem to matter to us. We also loved the way that... More

Popped in on our way home from a holiday in the brecon beacons. This castle has been on my list for a long time, but is just a bit far away from us for a day trip - although we plan to make the effort and come back. It's a very pleasing castle to look at and the gardens are... More

Having been to a few local national trust properties I really wanted to visit Powis Castle and all I can say is wow.. The castle itself isn't as large as I expected but that said not all areas are open during the winter months for maintenance and the rooms that are open are fantastic. We will definitely go back in... More

Each weekend from the end of November to Christmas the Castle and gardens are open from 5 to 8.30pm so that visitors can see the rooms decorated ready for Chistmas and also take a walk in the illuminated gardens. It is quite magical and well worth a visit. The staff must be congratulated on putting on such a wonderful display and being... Powis Castle owned by National Trust. Went this evening for the Illuminated gardens walk, stunning! The castle looked magnificent in the dark night with coloured lights. Some of the rooms in the castle had been decorated in a querky Christmas style, very original themes. Only slight disappointment that no one had thought to put any kind of Christian slant on...
