I was able to hike through this area during a hot summer day. I enjoy walking and the trails were easily passable, and to get from Manly Beach through the full sanctuary and back to Manly Harbor in about 3-4 hours. There were some great vistas of the shore along with some great wooded trails. The one warning I have... More

We took the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly and then walked around to Shelley beach and from there onto the North head itself. Through the national park and across the parade ground up to the North Head look-out and the Bella Vista Cafe at North Fort. Its a shortish walk really and not taxing at all but the diverse... More

We strolled through the town to Manley beach which was heaving with sun worshippers before strolling along the promenade, a mile or so to Shelly Beach where we ate lunch sitting in front of the lovely beach café.. We walked on, up into the Sidney Harbour National Park with S leading the way. After a couple of miles we reached... More

I have travelled to North Head Sanctuary many times, usually with family or friends. This is definitely one of the best places to get a great perspective of Sydney and in particular a view of “the heads" (entrance to the harbour). You can easily spend a few hours up there. The attractions are many such as the Q-Station (which is... More

We drove to North Head and turned left into the Barracks. There is a visitor centre there with information about the Sanctuary. We walked from there down to Shelley Beach for a swim and a coffee. The views are terrific and it is well worth the effort

Thanks Marianne H. The visitor centre is now located at North Fort, which is just a few minutes drive past The Barracks Precinct. Call in to meet our wonderful volunteers who are knowledgeable about the site. More

Yesterday, my husband and I did a tour of the tunnels at North Fort located on Sydney's North Head. These tunnels, gun emplacements and more at North Fort contributed to the defence of Sydney in WW11. Very informative and good value. Tour does include bush tracks, steep stairs and underground tunnels so sensible footwear is a must.

We walked up to North Head from Manly - beautiful landscape and amazing views of the ocean and of Sydney. No echidnas but we saw one from the bus on the way back down! I would rate this the number one thing to do when visiting Sydney. Take water and sunscreen with you and be prepared to be rewarded for... More

I always take my visitors up here to view our beautiful harbour, there are lovley walking paths and views up the coast as well. There is a bus up from Manly wharf as is a walk up the hill. Lovely early morning for views to the north and late afternoon for sunset over the harbour.

We visited recently and if you have never been make sure you visit too! The most amazing views in a peaceful setting. Words can't describe it as much as going and taking a look for yourself. Great for tourists, Sydney siders and for someone looking to take their other half to a very romantic spot. If your catching public transport... More

Staying in Manly

Neighbourhood Profile
Manly
A 40-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay will take you to the famous northern beach of Manly. The beaches here are perfect for learning to surf or spending the day sun-tanning. The walk from Spit Bridge to Manly is a great way to experience Sydney Harbour Bay and the Australian bush land. Along the foreshore, there are plenty of watering holes and wine bars with excellent cuisine. There are plenty of kid-friendly restaurants as well, especially along the family-oriented areas like Shelly Beach. An excellent way to experience Manly is to rent a bike and explore the dedicated bike paths and off road trails. The North Head National Park is another must-see. Located on the southern tip of Manly, North Head National Park offers great bushwalks and panoramic views of the city.
