We drove to North Head and turned left into the Barracks. There is a visitor centre there with information about the Sanctuary. We walked from there down to Shelley Beach for a swim and a coffee. The views are terrific and it is well worth the effort

Thanks Marianne H. The visitor centre is now located at North Fort, which is just a few minutes drive past The Barracks Precinct. Call in to meet our wonderful volunteers who are knowledgeable about the site. More

Yesterday, my husband and I did a tour of the tunnels at North Fort located on Sydney's North Head. These tunnels, gun emplacements and more at North Fort contributed to the defence of Sydney in WW11. Very informative and good value. Tour does include bush tracks, steep stairs and underground tunnels so sensible footwear is a must.

We walked up to North Head from Manly - beautiful landscape and amazing views of the ocean and of Sydney. No echidnas but we saw one from the bus on the way back down! I would rate this the number one thing to do when visiting Sydney. Take water and sunscreen with you and be prepared to be rewarded for... More

I always take my visitors up here to view our beautiful harbour, there are lovley walking paths and views up the coast as well. There is a bus up from Manly wharf as is a walk up the hill. Lovely early morning for views to the north and late afternoon for sunset over the harbour.

We visited recently and if you have never been make sure you visit too! The most amazing views in a peaceful setting. Words can't describe it as much as going and taking a look for yourself. Great for tourists, Sydney siders and for someone looking to take their other half to a very romantic spot. If your catching public transport... More

You really should take half a day or more and catch the ferry from Sydney to Manly, hire a bike and ride around the iconic North Heads. The ride up to the heads is the only hard part. The seaward vista is breathtaking, and the views back through the harbour are lovely. There's something for nature lovers, military history buffs,... More

North Head Sanctuary is a great place to explore either by walking or by bicycle as lots of very good tracks to ride on. We spent a whole day there exploring. We started at the Old Military Base where you could view from the outside the barracks and also the huge parade ground. Throughout North Head there are old guns... More

I have stopped here on my way on the Manly Scenic Walk up to the cliff. You can walk there like I did, drive your park (plenty of parking slots) or take a bus from Manly Wharf. (Review the schedule before you do!) There is not much around there but one café and an information center. Do grab one of... More

Staying in Manly

Neighbourhood Profile
Manly
A 40-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay will take you to the famous northern beach of Manly. The beaches here are perfect for learning to surf or spending the day sun-tanning. The walk from Spit Bridge to Manly is a great way to experience Sydney Harbour Bay and the Australian bush land. Along the foreshore, there are plenty of watering holes and wine bars with excellent cuisine. There are plenty of kid-friendly restaurants as well, especially along the family-oriented areas like Shelly Beach. An excellent way to experience Manly is to rent a bike and explore the dedicated bike paths and off road trails. The North Head National Park is another must-see. Located on the southern tip of Manly, North Head National Park offers great bushwalks and panoramic views of the city.
