About
Taking a ferry directly from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo, located in the suburb of Mosman, is the first unexpected joy of visiting the animal park. Once there, the leisurely trails and opportunity to see some of Australia's distinct wildlife become apparent, as does the striking view of the Harbour Bridge from the seating at the aerial bird show. Advance booking can give you the chance to see koalas up close, or stay overnight and 'camp' in the zoo.

- mcsquaredNew Zealand19 contributionsNice enough zooWe travelled from Circular Quay, purchasing our own ferry tickets and zoo tickets online whilst on the ferry. The ferry trip is great with great views of the city, bridge etc. From the ferry we walked up the hill to the southern entrance. First pro tip: In hindsight we should have taken the shuttle to the top main entrance. The zoo is spread out on a steep hillside. We effectively walked to the top and am back down again, starting from the top would be easier. The zoo itself was nice (with the usual moral conflict of wild animals being kept in very small enclosures) highlights being the koalas, Tasmanian Devils and some very large lizards running around the gardens. Along with the usual range of exotic animals it also cames with the ubiquitous outrageously over priced sub-par food - Second pro tip: stop at Woolworths and bring your own lunch. All up, a pretty good one for the kids.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 October 2023
- guennie3Cambridge, United Kingdom450 contributionsZoo with a viewWhat a fantastic zoo. My husband and I spent a most pleasant afternoon here, ambling around and looking at the many interesting animals in their very well set up and natural surroundings. We arrived by ferry from Circular Quay and then got the bus up to the zoo. The view of the city and harbour is amazing from here.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 October 2023
- AshleighBridgwater, United Kingdom29 contributionsLovely day outOn my solo trip to Australia i decided to do a day out to Taronga zoo. I didn’t manage to see everything as it is so big! Loads of animals and what made it extra special was the view looking out onto the opera house and harbour. Although there are a lot of families here i think it’s definitely worth going a solo day trip too!Visited April 2023Travelled soloWritten 15 January 2024
- LindajwilHeathcote, Australia435 contributionsHard WorkIt’s certainly a lovely zoo. Perfectly placed on the amazing harbour but as far as user friendly- not so much. The ferry trip across from Circular Quay is easy but then after a nasty bus shuttle up the steep hill (never consider walking) to the entrance it is pretty cramped and maize like to get around. The animals habitats are well marked but I still am not convinced that their map was user friendly and once inside - it is hard to navigate a path back down to the outward ferry. Look, I am whinging but it should be easier to navigate with clearer signage.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 January 2024
- robert kAtlanta, Georgia23 contributionsAwesome place to see Australian animals of all kinds. This place was so awesome. We saw so many animals that you would never see anywhere else in the world. We saw koalas, snakes, lizards, bears, tigers, crocodiles, platypus, dingos, meerkats, kangaroos, wallaby’s, and Tasmanian devils. I’m sure I missed some but you see what I mean. Pretty much every animal in Australia is at this zoo and not to mention you can see the opera house, bridge, and city from this place. We happen to be there during vivid Sydney also so we got to see all the lights in the city and the zoo. June is a great time to visit. It is a little cold at night but a small jacket will keep you warm. Temperatures during the day were fine.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 April 2024
- KandTCanberra328 contributionsA great zoo!Every aspect of our visit was excellent. There is clearly an emphasis on natural habitats and a commendable slant towards conservation. The highlights were watching the elephants having their morning wash and scrub in the elephant barn (including lifting their feet, one at a time, for scrubbing and toe-nail cleaning) and the "free flight birds" session - how on earth do they prompt and train these birds which are free to fly anywhere they choose to do these amazing things on cue? Recommend a visit.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 August 2024

Second time I have visited with half the animals on display. The food market was closed and only a coffee shop available with limited food options. Would only recommend if you want to see half the zoo animals and pay 14 dollars for a coffee shop wrap.

Easy access from the city. We took a ferry from circular quay and was there in 15 mins. Entrance is via sky park ... cable car but not very high and takes you in to the zoo. All enclosures are clean and plenty of staff on hand to ensure any question is answered. If time and money allow, look to do one of the animal experiences...we did the koala one and you get a photo included and can take as many of your own as needed. Entrance to zoo is about £20 based on feb 2020 rates. Food and drink is available inside but as expected a bit pricey...and mainly anything with chips. Despite this would thoroughly recommend for a full day out.
Please note this humbling experience was made all the more special given the terrible fires that have recently ravaged Australia and the amount of animals which lost their lives because of it.

We took the ferry from Circular Quay to the Zoo. We would have used the cable car except there was a huge queue so we walked up the road to the Zoo. It didn't take long but was uphill sonic you have mobility problems it would prove a bit difficult. Once in Zoo I was a little disappointed with the lack of space that was devoted to the am make - even though it is advertised as a conservation zoo. The way that the seals could only swim around in circles in a small area was not a happy experience

Having visited Taronga 25 years ago I can only express my disappointment today. Nothing to compare with the ole days when you could see plenty of animals, cuddle koalas, etc. Now you hardly get to see any, 3 kangaroos, 1 koala that later disappeared completely, 1 Tassie devil, 1 platypus and no wombat at all. They charge you AUD 49,- entrance fee plus 30,- for animal encounters - but you might wait 2 hours to get into the encounter site or don't get there at all on the same day. The place is full of prohibitions, restrictions and cancelled feeding shows, hence never worth the money you pay to get in. All you get is info panels and souvenirs, everything but the animals. The Taronga management would be well advised to review their business strategy and customer mindedness.

This zoo is an awesome day out for all ages providing it’s a dry day, we caught the ferry across from circular quay which took approximately 15 mins & cost $8.00 & you get off directly at the zoo, it’s well spaced over huge amount of land with some of the best views in Sydney. Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes.
Enjoy 😊

In general it was a Fanta visit. When we arrived Taronga zoo we found that the entrance which is close to the wharf was in maintenance but luckily we could take a bus or sky Siri to the entrance on the top of the hill. As there were many people in the queue waiting for skyways, we chose bus to reach the top of the mountain. We booked the family tickets online using 2 NSW discover vouchers so the price was really nice. After we entered the zoo we walked through to the zones popular animals such as seals, sea lions and Sumatra tigers as they were my kid’s favourites. There were heaps of people watching the famous animals but we still got the chance to walk in and have a clear view of them so my kid was excited when seeing them.We also watched other animals such as giraffes, elephants, dromedaries, meercats, sun bears, a variety of reptiles and some other different wild animals. We stayed in the zoo for more than 3 hours and before we left we bought the tortoise toy in the souvenir shop for my kid and she was really happy with it. We took the sky siri from the zoo to the wharf and took a ferry to leave Taronga zoo. In summary it was an excellent trip for our entire family!

Very large and easily navigated around park lands style Zoo, Sections undergoing transformation to the African Experience, certainly do not impede any access to existing features, Plenty to see and experience, shows on all the time, in different sections. but seriously even without the shows/Talks you experience a lot.
We came from City via Ferry, then did the Gondola ride to the top and made our eventual way back to the bottom in time for the 4.15 ferry, plenty of time to ramble along at our pace and not some tour guides pace!

As a regular at the zoo over the last decade it’s always a well loved day out. The new enclosures are great and the giraffes & zebra, lions & meerkats have the best views in Sydney! I would give the zoo itself a 5/5 rating.
The zoo has prepared for Covid restrictions well with lots of social distancing signs, plenty of sanitiser and limited tickets. What they can’t control is the visitors who completely disregard all social distancing advice. We left early unable to maintain our distance from moron visitors who I would give a 0/5 rating.
Perhaps worth checking with management when it’s quietest (looks to be afternoon) or wait till the health crisis is over.

Zoo itself is really good, animals look healthy and cared for, the only issue I saw was that the sea lion at the zoo exit seems to go in repetitive circular motion - think boredom has set it, the zoo has great views of the harbour and city. Had a great time managed almost 3/4 a day there. Only downside is the restaurants and cafes are expensive - I guess they can charge what they like, where else you going to go. TIP; Take your own food and drinks. $4.50 for a bottle of water that’s excessive. Feel sorry for families who have to pay the huge premium prices.

How do you book animal encounters & find times for the various animal talks & shows? I couldn’t find any precise info on their website.

How do you book animal encounters & find times for the various animal talks & shows? Couldn’t find any clear info on their website
Written 12 September 2022
Hi, animal encounters can only be booked on the day. I believe it’s a first come, first served basis. The animal talks and shows run every half an hour or so, you can collect a map on your way in which shows all the times on there.
If you want to see the seal show I suggest lining up half an hour before the show so you don’t miss out as there’s limited seating.

We are flying into Sydney's international airport and staying at the Wildlife retreat Taronga. Is it possible to take public transportation from the airport to the Taronga zoo ?
Written 21 November 2021
Yes, public transport is actually the fastest way to the Zoo. First just catch a Public Train from the Airport to Circular Quay. Then just find the Taronga Zoo Wharf for a 12 minute Public Ferry ride direct to the Zoo.
Written 22 November 2021
Whats it like during these covid times im guessing no animal encounters? I read on their site they are still doing the bird show with reduced capacity but what about the seal show?
Written 24 January 2021
I always like to be positive, particularly about Taronga Zoo as I have been there many times over the years. But my opinion the zoo barely meets a good standard. There is much construction which precludes seeing much of the Savannah enclosures, refreshments/food very hard to get too, one entrance only (top only). So, through no fault of the zoo I think during COVID times I would go elsewhere. Perhaps when some of the restrictions that impact are lifted it would be worth it.... Sorry about that but the zoo is impacted in a big way but only my viewpoint.
Written 26 January 2021
What are the must see areas of the zoo, do they have a discount for concession card holders?
Written 13 January 2020
There is a concession price for seniors, around 10% off the normal entry price ($43) . Our daughter had the entertainment book luckily which allowed us access to the zoo for $36.75, so it paid for itself really on the day!
The seal show is a hoot, and was great fun for our grandkids to watch. However, get there before the allotted start time as seating can be a bit difficult if you find standing challenging for a half hour show. Plus, do not sit in the front row,it can get a little wet!
Written 19 January 2020
Is it best to pre book a ferry ticket & zoo entry before heading to Australia? Is it easy getting to & from the cable car form the ferry?
Written 11 July 2019
You should have a reservation for the Zoo if you plan on any special tours or guides. Plus prebooking allows you entry into the cable car. Otherwise you have to take a bus ride to the ticket counter.
As for the Ferry. No need for a reservation. Just walk up and use the opal card. The opal card is Sydney’s train, bus and ferry prepaid entry card. You just add funds to it as needed.
Have a great time.
