Puffing Billy is...

Puffing Billy is Australia’s favorite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century-old steam train continues to run on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges 40kms east of Melbourne.

Puffing Billy was built to serve at the turn of the century and is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s.

Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 900 dedicated volunteers.

A remarkably fun day made possibly by a host of really lovely volunteers, we had the Steam and Cuisine meal, which involved three courses of food on the ride up through the mountains from Belgrave to Lakeside and back. To be honest, though the food was very nice, it wasn't the highlight of this trip. Instead, the atmosphere provided by... More

The Puffing Billy was so much fun and easy to get to by train. I went half way on the train to Lakeside which took 1 hour to get there. I had lunch there which was nice and not to expensive.

Our favourite thing to do in the Dandenongs. I won't go on much as I am sure many have. If hot take togs there is a outdoor pool by lake. Take seed to feed rosellas at lakeside train station.

We arrived on a cold and rainy morning in the week before Christmas, The volunteers who run the railway could not have been more helpful, accomodating and cheerful. The locomotives themselves were a delight to see and in immaculate condition. The noise and smell of the steam added to the atmosphere. It had been raining quite heavily and the seats... More

I joined a one-day tour to take the Puffing Billy train. I have to see we really love it. It was a fun time for all my family members, including 70 yr old granny and 10 yr old kids. Must try.

We had such a great afternoon ride on this train! A real classic steam train with all the bells n whistles. Weather was wonderful. Conductors super friendly and happily posed for pics. Kids loved getting the front seats where they were able to sit with feet hanging out the windows. It's an excellent outing and worth bringing a picnic lunch... More

My wife and I took the train to Lakeside station. The train ride was romantic t begin with but there was really nothing much to do at the destination. We might only go back in a few years time as it got bit boring towards the end for 2 adults.

Dear Benjamin W Thank you for your feedback regarding the journey to Lakeside station. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the journey on the train even though you didn't find much to do at Lakeside. We find that many of our patrons enjoy walking around the lake, watching the bird life, grabbing some lunch from the cafes or... More

I never realized that the majority of the equipment they use is original to the line. And the line they use was the entire railroad minus the Ferntree Gully to Belgrave part which is now an electric commuter line to Melbourne. The trip itself was a great way to spend a day. I rode Belgrave to Gembrook and return. But... More
