Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The access to the reserve and the mount are well sign posted right from town. As you enter the reserve there is a parking area for access to the creater that is on the side of the Mount. Next stop is a picnic area that has a toilet and several picnic tables. If you have a caravan or large trailer, best park here. At the top there is a small parking area and if there is another visitor parked there then turning a trailer becomes a challenge. The walk from the picnic area is only another 5 minutes. From the top car park there is a set of steps to a viewing platform and a seat by the side that is a great picnic spot as long as the wind is from the other side of the mount.

How do more people not know about this amazing lookout? One of the highlights of our stay in western Victoria. You can walk up the stairs or follow hiking trail around side from top car park. It also also a picnic area halfway up mountain or you can do the volcano crater walk.

Lovely location. We drove to the picnic spot which has an electric bbq seating and toilets. The lookout was closed for an upgrade but there's a longer walk from the picnic area that will get you there about 40 mins return. Lots of wallabies and a few snakes still about.

I love Victoria's extinct volcanoes and Mt Rouse is an interesting complex volcano. Lookout has stunning views over the plains. Picnic area is fine and you can drive from there to the lookout. Further below is a walk to the water filled crater, and I saw so many roos on my sunset walk. Visit the nearby excellent Volcanic Discovery Centre in Penshurst to learn more about local volcanics.

This lookout is some 2-3 Klms from the small but picturesque township of Penshurst. Created by a volcanic eruption, the lookout offers 360 degree views of the surrounds from the Grampians to the North to the beautiful farmlands to the east , west and south. The walk from the car park to the lookout is circa 120-150 steps so it is not strenuous. The views are breathtaking. Try to time your visit to a late afternoon (1-2 hours pre dusk) or early morning on a clear day (yes it does rain in Western Victoria).

It really is worth taking the time to drive the short distance to this lookout. A few stairs at the end, and you have a really stunning view. The nearby town of Penshurst, the wind farms in the distance, the surrounding rural area, plus lots of wallabies.

This old volcano is very easy to access, and will take only a few minutes of your time while driving in this otherwise flat farmland area, but the view from the top, including on the Grampians is superb. Don't miss it, it's worth the short detour.

This is a must as when going through the area. The short winding drive takes you practically to the top, wild flowers, wallabies and nature can be viewed on the drive. Once at the top a set of annoying stairs go the last 100 metres ( steps are too close together for my big steps ).
The view completely down on the town and surrounding farms is incredible. You can see the wind farms in the distance, the winding of the highway and the lava tubes journey through the fields. The walk down is just as annoying. Great resting spot if on a long journey , onsite barbeque and shelter.

We were passing through Penshurst when we saw the sign for the volcano museum, and on the advice of the lady working there we visited Mt Rouse on our way south to Port Fairy. You can drive almost to the summit around old craters, and then climb the last few steps to the top to be rewarded with far reaching views. Worth the short detour from the main road, and definitely worth visiting the nearby volcano museum to learn a bit about the history of the other volcanoes in the area.

Visitors from overseas have always found this area fascinating. The town itself, the volcanic connections and the great service at a lovely cafe.
