I drove down to Sorrento on 7 Jan 2015. I parked on the left of the jetty, along the beach, probably around 8:15am. Weekday and despite being a school holiday, there was plenty of parking. The parking meters are gone though, with options to go buy tickets from the jetty or use an online app (I used this and I think I paid using Paypal).
There are toilets to the right of the jetty, if you follow the footpath, maybe 30 metres away.
Ferry staff were able to direct me to the correct side of the jetty (left hand side, go to the end) and there was a Moonraker vehicle and trailer waiting along with other people waiting to join the tour.
I was going to swim. I didn't realize there were 3 things to get before going on board including the wet suit, the flippers AND the mask. Being short sighted, I'd been advised, yes, there are _complimentary_ optical masks. But I think there are only 2. I was later given one which was 0.5, as the stronger one had already gone out. If I went back, I'd let them know in advance that I need the stronger one and make sure I borrowed it before I got on the boat.
Staff were friendly and knew what they were doing when sizing people for wet suits and flippers.
On the boat there are 2 small toilet/shower cubicles and you can also rent items from downstairs (towels, Go Pro camera etc) as well as buying snacks and drinks. I would recommend putting on the swimsuit before heading down to Sorrento and wearing it under regular clothing.
Again, staff on the boat were professional, patient and friendly.
If you want to rent a Go Pro:
- practice with it on the boat, so you can tell if it is taking photos/video etc
- if you can, bring your own microSD card with large capacity. Rental includes the purchase of a 2GB which ... if you do video, will fill it up before the day is over. (Then queue up and ask them if they can put your card into the GoPro)
The way this trip is structured they will:
- first try to find the dolphins and give everyone the chance for an experience with them
- next, take you to a spot where the seals like to rest, so you can have an experiene with them
- IF there is time, take you to the Marine Park to encounter other marine life
On my day, we had many people and time was focussed on people getting to have an experience with the dolphins :) (I did get to see one swimming up to me) but we ran out of time for seeing the Marine Park.
I found it was good having some cash in a zip lock as although I brought my own waterproof case and camera, water got in and fried my camera ... but I had money on hand to rent a Go Pro. (I am starting to suspect I was in a rush and it was my own fault for not closing the case properly, but I will get my case tested)
The snorkelling instruction was great, though if you can practice with a mask before hand, it's probably a good idea.
I went on a day forecast for little wind which was great. No problems fighting waves etc.
The day I went was also warm after a hot day ... water temperature was fine. Visibility was excellent.
I really enjoyed this trip and ... if they had one that just went to the Marine Park I'd be very interested. :) (If they need someone to try out a swimming trip just to the Marine Park ... I could help out too ;)
Thank you to the crew and captain :)
