Overview
More
The Steinbach Haus was originally built in Alsace, France between 1618 and 1648 by the Steinbach family. This house is built with pegs so that it is movable. The Steinbach family lived in the house until 1988 when they disassembled it, numbering the beams and putting them in storage. The fachwerk beams were shipped from France to Castroville, TX in 1998, as a gift to the people of Medina County. The Alsatian volunteers came to Castroville and put the house back together, decorating it with furniture that was donated by the Alsatian people and shipped over. Now it serves as a museum and a visitor center for everyone to enjoy.

His house was interestingly enough built with curved beams and then filled in with plaster or, in the old days, mud. The lady working The Visitor Center was very helpful and gave good information on the house. Definitely worth a stop. It doesn't take too...More

This reconstructed 1600s Alsatian home seems a bit out of place, located as it is off a major street, but it is well worth a stop. Since the founders of Castroville were from the Alsace, a region alternately German and French, it is a metaphor...More

We thought there would be more to this. It was a nice old house sent over from Europe. But it was mainly the beams ,,the bricks were all new from Texas. We spent 15 minutes there and done.

Cool story on its construction and a lot of things to see inside for a small house. More like a museum than visitor center.

Enjoyed reading the explanations of how this house was donated and rebuilt. Period furniture helped understand the life in Alsace and in early 1700's.
