Their collection is fabulous, however Hurricane Ike destroyed their facility. They are currently building out a new space in the county courthouse but an opening date isn't in the near future.

Stop here first before touring. Made wonderful suggestions for lunch and things to do with bored teen.

The Galveston County Historical Museum is a must, especially if you know nothing of the history of the area. It's free, it's air-conditioned and very informative. Great exhibits.
