Down House was interesting and Mr and Mrs Darwin were superb (highlight of the trip). Darwin would be ashamed at the evolution of the cafe prices. £4 for tea for 2...£3.50 for a slice of cake. Really felt like a rip off. Go for the interesting subject but matter take your sandwiches and drinks with you.

Our family of 2 young children, parents and grandparents spent a very enjoyable few hours at Down House today (16th Feb). We found it fascinating and the staff were more than happy to answer any questions. The highlight for us was the talk by 'Mr & Mrs Darwin', who put every effort into their brilliant characterisations and involved the children... More

Travelled 200 miles to visit Down House from Cheshire to Kent. What an amazing property, set in beautiful grounds, the house is fantastic. Downstairs everything looks as is the Darwin family have just popped out, upstairs has a replica of Darwin's cabin on the Beadle, a children's playroom and other interesting rooms. There is a small simple cafe leading to... More

We took 7 and 10 year-old girls on a snowy saturday. Much to our surprise they loved it, particularly the mock-up of the cabin on the Beagle. The play room was a welcome interlude before the audio-guided ground floor rooms. The guide was very informative and appealed to the children as well as the adults. Next time we hope to... More

Down House was a great couple of hours spent on a Saturday afternoon. While I personally don't agree with all of Darwin's theories, I was fascinated with the history surrounding his voyage on the Beagle, his discoveries, and his everyday life. What a lovely home and lovely setting. The gardens were wonderful. This would be an excellent place to take... More

This is such an interesting house with a very good audio guide, child friendly areas and , as usual for English Heritage, excellent staff. Charles Darwin and his family are brought to life..... it is well worth a visit.

Aside from the historical significance of the Darwin family the house is pleasant to walk through and the grounds are lovely and easy to navigate. The gardens are particularly beautiful mid-summer. It's not going to take up a full day but there's plenty nearby to fill the rest of your day out.
