Wwe spent all day here exploring the exhibit, reading every bit of information and listening to the headphone set. If you love Darwin, the theory of evolution, this is the place to come! pleasantly surprised, the website does not do it justice, there was far more to read and see in the exhibits than i first thought. we went in... Aside from the historical significance of the Darwin family the house is pleasant to walk through and the grounds are lovely and easy to navigate. The gardens are particularly beautiful mid-summer. It's not going to take up a full day but there's plenty nearby to fill the rest of your day out.

Welcoming place - amazing displays - well maintained inside and out. Highly worth a visit for lovers of Charles Darwin. We easily spent 2 hours here and if I weren't so hungry would have made my way doing more. From London you can google how to get here by public transport. If you time it correctly (and you should) you... More

Charles Darwin lived in this house for many years and had 10 children - 3 died before the age of 10. Very good presentation of his world circumference in the Beagle, and the massive number of specimens he collected in this very small boat. It then took him 20 years to publish his World beating book, since he wanted to... More

Highly recommend for a few hours (we were there for about 3 hours including a lovely lunch). We learned a lot about the fascinating life of Charles Darwin and his family - please let the volunteers show off their knowledge as it really adds to the understanding of the house and family. Good exhibits, well laid out in the house.... More

Does very well in explaining CD achievements and the family's life and history at Down House. Plenty to occupy children. Must visit gardens and surrounding countryside so check weather before you go.

Give credit where credit due; English Heritage have done a superb job renovating and up keeping this house. Depending on which mode of transport you take to get to the venue, the drive through the narrow country lanes is beautiful. At the venue, there is ample free car parking. Your tour begins by visiting the 6 rooms on the first... More

To view the works of Charles Darwin first hand, to experience where he lived and worked, and developed theories that have sustained man's thinking for nearly 200 years, is a wonderful experience. English Heritage offer a superb collection of artifacts that both interest and stimulate. And with the gardens so neatly laid out and beautifully colourful what more could you... More

What a gem this English Heritage site is. The audio guided tour began upstairs with a well constructed summary of Darwin's contribution to evolution. There is enough for the interested adult, yet sufficient to keep children entertained without being bored. A recently restored bedroom provided fun to dress-up. The gardens provided insights into the household diet (huge patch), quiet walks... More
