After a late lunch at Hungry's (also in the Rice Village), we went to Ovations to hear "Henry vs. Glen - an epic jazz battle!" The doors opened up at 5 p.m. and the music was scheduled to start at 6 p.m. We got there at 5 p.m. so we could get the best seats. We were sat in the anteroom as the musicians were setting up. While waiting, a man (who we soon learned was the owner) came in to talk to us. We told him we were there early as I had a bit of a "bum knee" and wanted to make sure I got a seat. The man, Frank Tilton (owner) talked to us for quite a while. He is absolutely charming! We were telling Frank about Rick Hall of Muscle Shoals fame (Rick was the son of a sharecropper) and Frank told us that he, too, was the son of a sharecropper, was born in central Kentucky where they did not have electricity until he was 16. (He was poor, but didn't know he was poor.) Frank let us in early to get our seats and came to talk to us more. We sat up at the top of the stairs, steps from the bar. There were eight members in the "band", including Henry and Glen. Henry plays piano (and sings on some songs) and Glen plays bass. The other instruments played were trumpet, trombone, tenor, alto, guitar and drums. The music was great! The venue is such that it is easy to meet the performers afterwards. The venue itself is pretty cool, albeit outdated. There is a smaller second level, which is where the bar is. The seating is limited and in a U-shape. The stairs to the second level are wide and steep, so be careful! We grabbed our seat upstairs by the stairway and only two steps from the bar. Great seats! The ceiling is vaulted and very high. They have mirrors, making it easy to see all the performers from different angles. Good place to go hear music and other artistic performances whether you are a local or from out of town. The tickets are very reasonably priced.

It was mothers day, I did not have a mother with me but I went anyhow........to see the Lady sing JAZZ Raquel Cepeda with her amazing musician's. Excellent venue, small and well appointed interior everyone gets a good view. Well stocked bar and attentive staff. The whole scene is welcoming and friendly. I'll be looking out for he next show where ever they are appearing.

Small club in the Rice Village area of Houston. No food, but good drinks and live entertainment. Ovations is not open all the time, only when booked for events. We saw a jazz vocal group - "Cloudburst", had a drink, and enjoyed a relaxing time. The singers and musicians were excellent!
