It took us awhile to find the Black Jesus but I'm glad we didn't give up. The atmosphere around the statue and in the little grotto it's in is definitely different than the rest of the cemetery. It is a heavier feel, cooler in temperature,...More

Yep just pure old old history and very intriguing. Just a time consuming venture but worth all the time spent reading and walking. Very very interesting and thought provoking. I do love history and just thinking about what it was like.

We learned so much by reading the markers. The history that was there was amazing. Well know people of the town, Sam Houston and so many death's due to an epidemic.

We stopped by to see this after we found it on TripAdvisor. It was a nice place to visit. Old fashion cemetery with a lot of history behind it. Some of it could use a loving hand but all in all well kept.

This is a well shaded cemetery with a walking tour that shows different areas and outlines who is buried here. Of course Sam Houston's grave was here as well as many of his acquaintances. It is away from busy traffic areas, so I found it...More

Oakwood Cemetery is well worth a visit. A number of famous Texas are buried here, including Sam Houston--the only American to serve as Governor or two US states, US Senator, and President of a foreign country.
