It's a Spanish Civil War Monument built by dictator Franco. They spent 2 decades building it. It has the tallest cross in the world. Inside is a church. No pictures are allowed inside. Scenari is just spectacular.

I visited the Monastery of El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen with a tour booked through the hotel/ Julia Travel. The huge cross stands out from the freeway before you get to the Valley and then the Basilica is beyond what I expected when I entered and beautiful.

We visited the Valley of the Fallen after visiting the monastery of El Escorial. The first thing one sees is the huge cross on top of the mountain. It can be seen all the way from the highway coming from Madrid. Although the basilica is impressive, one must not forget the symbolism of the place. This is where Franco is... More

We visited in December 2016. There was almost no one at the site when we visited. It is an amazing monument / cathedral that is hollowed out of the side of a mountain. The size of the monument is stunning and the views are fantastic. We were able to get some really neat pictures because no one was in or... More

Fascist architecture meets a doomsday bomb shelter. Worth the experience, the tragic history, and the bizarre results. The symbolism of it all is complex.

What a place. A piece of history that will leave you speechless. The audacity to build such a place, the brilliance to tunnel so far into the rock ... the tapestries ... a must see although a little out of the way of everything.

We visited on a very rainy and cold day so we couldn't see the cross outside or take in the view of the surrounding area. Still, visiting the basilica was worth the stop. We were fortunate as we arrived about 20 minutes before a mass began. This allowed us to wander through the area and then sit and witness the... More

At the beginning I thought this is going to be just another monument, but is so much more. Worth 10€. Under-mountain chapel is so amazing and breath taking.

We went out to visit this monument because it is where Franco was buried. We drove to this site along with another trip to Segovia. We could see the cross on the top of the mountain from miles and miles away. We parked with easy (not many people there that day). We could not see much from the outside. Once... More

This memorial to the Spanish Civil war is an impressive and emotionally powerful structure. Do not miss it! There is no information about the history of the war, construction of the basilica, or who is buried there. I suspect that is because it is very controversial in Spain. It is a short drive from Madrid. One then drives through a... More
