Sinister cold chilling. A fete of engineering but with a real eerie feel. Left here feeling like I needed to read more into Franco and the civil war.

This is a truly extraordinary illustration of what the arrogance of a dictator can create. Commissioned on the orders of Franco, this vast basilica and mausoleum sits under a 150m high cross adorned with massive heroic sculptures. The sheer scale of this site is breathtaking,...More

This is an easy drive from Madrid, should be coupled with a visit to El Escoriale, and will blow you away by not only the sheer size, but the craftsmanship and speed at which it was constructed. Highly worth a visit!

I was really looking forward to visiting the basilica and was completely overwhelmed by its presence. The dark atmosphere and amazing feat of engineering for this to be built just blew my mind away. The valley itself was absolutely insane with multiple sightings of wildlife...More

Franco is dead and the civil war is over, brutal as it was. Enjoy this location for what it is, a memorial for those who fought for both sides of the civil war. The Crucifix is something you need to see and the views are...More

The memorial to the casualties of the Spanish Civil War, and the tomb of Franco, is approximately one hour by road from MADRID. The memorial combines a huge cross visible from many kilometres away, and a Basilica carved into the mountain rock. The Basilica is...More

From parking area to Monument about half kilometer or 500 m. There was no alternative to climb to the top of the cross other than the funicular which is or was undergoing repairs.
