Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I never realised the importance of Dr Gachet in van Gogh’s last few months. In that short time, they became like brothers.
But around that is the influence of Dr Gachet on the impressionist movement. He was an enabler. He gathered people together, discussed ideas, gave them the freedom to explore, and to paint.
I was very lucky to have a passionate and knowledgeable guide who explained who Dr Gachet was, as well as giving in insight into his life, his loves and his family.
I would highly recommend a visit to this house - just to see and explore the man who collected not just art, but artists. Who created his own works, but allowed others to create theirs.
What a place that must have been!

Coming with friends to Auvers in the footsteps of Van Gogh, the visit of this house was a must. If the visit cannot be booked via the net, an email exchange was sufficient. 3€ is a more than reasonable price in our opinion. A very nice garden that can be enjoyed at ease after visiting the house. We had the chance to enjoy a guided tour by a very friendly young man, who was not miserly in anecdotes. It is with great emotion that we visited this site.

You can walk where Van Gogh walked, where he painted and where he was treated for his demons homeopathically by this doctor with a lot of business sense and terrific foresight in that he accepted paintings in lieu of money for treatments not only of Van Gogh, but of other Impressionists as well. His son donated the collection to the French state and you can see them today in Paris museums. His garden is beautiful and the house shows how a country doctor lived 125 years ago.

Dr Gachet's house is a nice hideaway almost outside the village with beautiful gardens and a small exposition inside the house. It's really charming.

The real reason to visit here is that this was the home of Vincent's doctor and he did paint some scenes from here. The house and grounds are not remarkable in any respect. They do offer insight into the lifestyle of people of Dr Gachet's station at that time and , once again one must consider the Vincent aspect

When you read about Dr. Gachet's life at the exhibit, you will see why Theo Van Gogh trusted him to look after his brother Vincent. The museum is very personal and gives you a perspective on the lives of artist at that time and place. The doctor's garden includes images that Vincent Van Gogh painted of it and how it looks today. The admission is free, so don't miss it!

The doctor's house provides a helpful backdrop to Van Gogh's inspirations to his paintings. Ideally, see the doctor's house and the Maison on the same visit and then visit the Musee d'Orsay afterwards when you can see Van Gogh's interpretations of the village scenes.

We found the place fairly quiet late afternoon, after most of the bus tours had departed.

A little walk from the town centre but well worth it- entrance is free. A charming house and the story of the relationship with not only Van Gogh but other artists- is very interesting. Also there was an exhibition of his own drawings . He spoke at Van Gogh's funeral and planted the ivy at the graves of the brothers so it made one tomb to bind them together.

I had a fab day looking and walking in the footsteps of Van Gogh and as I was heading to The House of Dr Gachet I mat Marianna.

The Day I Spent in Auvers-Sur-Oise

She appeared at the top of a dusty steep track
That peeped out among dry stone walls and foliage
Onto the Rue Victor Hugo
She on an after thought could have been
Ursula Andress coming out of the sea
To greet Shaun Connery in the scene from Dr No.
Indeed it was such a strange sight.
“Avez-vous le chemin de la maison du Docteur Gachet”?
“Direct”! I pointed the way ahead.
“Direct”?
“Yes” I said” it’s direct”.
She was slight very, very slight
She could have easily been a model or a film star
Everything about her reminded me of someone
I have no idea who it was
She told me her name was Marianna
She grabbed my arm and held me tight
One of her high heels that was so thin and delicate broke
She held onto me while she did a fast repair
She was immaculate in pearls and diamanté
Her hair glowed in the sunlight
“Allez-vous à une danse”? I asked her as I was so amazed at her attire
“Aucun,Chic” she answered
We escorted each other to the house of Dr Gachet where we sipped champagne
She introduced me to the mayor and a poet and some artists
It was a premier and we drank more champagne
Chatted and laughed and had a splendid afternoon
On leaving her at the same steep track I said “goodbye-au revoir madame”
She turned and fixed me in her crystal blue eyes.
“No John ….. Marianna”.
Arnold on the other hand was so much bigger than his slim frame
Arnold was loud very loud and he commanded me to look at him and his past
He had paintings outside on easels which were terrible
Blotches of paint and stippled colours
No forms at all Van Gogh attempts
A sign said café fermé but he sat in his studio in a garden
That was cracking in the afternoon heat
I was shown in and sat down while he hunted manic like in the draw of a cabinet
A hand full of images black and white of his children
Images too of his youth spent in Montmartre
He looked great every inch a rebel
He spoke of his family all living in London all doing well
One in Richmond with deer and ducks
He laughed loud very loud pointing at me and laughing
Fou Fou I thought. “I am Paris, Paris is Paris, I miss Paris”!
“Montmartre and my youth I miss it all”!
He showed me pictures of himself with princesses and glamorous
Ladies that offered him a different life
“No I was married with four children how could I”?
He said laughing again laughing loud
A cigarette unlit in his had pointing
“Politics” he shouted showing me a photo of a man standing on a box
“Politic, Politic Change nothing will change
Around and around
You take they want
The want they take”!
Loud laughter “nothing changes”!
I said “goodbye -au revoir monsieur”
I took a quick selfie of us together
The artist and the fool
And headed to Paris

The house of Docteur Gachet is as gloomy as can be, it stands against falling rocks, you can smell the humidity and the poor girls who are at the entrance look so bored. but it is still worth a visit for the price.
