In 1868, Samuel Bell Maxey and his family moved into their fashionable new home on the south side of Paris, Texas. Built in the High Italianate style, the two-story frame structure was a proper home for the West Point-educated Mexican War veteran, Confederate general, and two-term U.S. senator. Maxey and his wife Matilda hosted many distinguished guests and the house soon became the town's social center. Today, the home showcases original family furnishings, clothing, and letters, which provide visual voices for three successive generations.

First you need to know they start tours at the top of the hour and the last one starts at 3PM. The doors will be locked except for then. The grounds can be toured at anytime however. The house has been renovated and added on a couple of times but the rooms are being returned to their original state when... More

The house was having some major restoration work being done when we visited. We were the only people on the tour. The rooms we were able to see were interesting. The tour guide, a veteran, was nice and had a good way of telling the story of the family. Sorry, I can't remember her name. There were some old toys... More

The house tour is great. The docents are very knowledgeable and entertaining. We went during the Halloween tour and I really enjoyed learning about the customs and traditions the people had during the Victorian time period. They also have a Christmas tour during December.

Never got to see this. This museum was supposed to be open as advertised. Somehow, someone forgot to update or tell persons of revised hours.

Received quite a history lesson on who Sam Bell Maxey was and what he did for Texas. Additionally, we toured his home and saw what a Halloween would have been like in the late 1800's.

I would actually give this a rating of 3.5 but TA doesn't do halves, so I'll tip it to a full 4 thanks to the knowledgeable and enjoyable tour guide. She seemed to really love this house and it's history and gave lots of tidbits that I found interesting. My 13 and 9 year old boys even enjoyed it. It... More

One hour tour with a knowledgable tour guide. The depth of original pieces in this house is really unbelievable. My wife and I stopped in on a one day trip to Paris Tx. Learned alot about the area and history of the house. Any history buff would be well served making the stop in here.
