Smallest state capital but beautiful. I rode my e-bike by it several times a week during the summer. Great place to see if you're in town. DMV is across the street, so you have an excuse.

We stopped here on our way to Burlington, VT. We enjoyed exploring the building, opting to do a self-tour in the interests of time. They had guides doing formal tours and we heard tidbits. Lots of photo opportunities. When the house is not in session,...More

When we were there the state house was under renovation so the dome was covered with scaffolding. The grounds were beautifully landscaped unfortunately we were not able to go inside the building. Parking is available on the street and in a nearby lot.

They were not in session, so we could see both chambers, which was interesting to the children. Workers were helpful and friendly.

This is the way all states should run their governments. Basically a voluteer legislator with no staff or offices. I liked the fact that no electronic devises are allowed in the Senate chamber.

The towns of Waterbury, Stowe and Quechee are nice small towns to visit that are close to Montpelier, if you have a couple or few days to enjoy Vermont.
