Built around 1720, Scotchtown is architecturally unique, and the house is surrounded by reproduction outbuildings and gardens. Since being acquired by Preservation Virginia in 1958, the house has been restored to its appearance during Patrick Henry’s life and is open for tours seasonally.

Experience our dialogue based tour exploring Henry’s ideals of “Liberty, Human Rights and Revolution.” Also, explore the grounds, listen to a cell phone tour, enjoy a birding trail, shop in the museum store, eat lunch under our pavilion or participate in one of the site’s many hands-on classes and special events. Patrick Henry’s Scotchtown is also available for private rental. Visit our weddings section for more information about site rentals for reunions, festivals and feasts, photo shoots, TV/film shoots and of course, your special day!

This plantation is easily accessible from I-95 and worth the detour if you're on your way somewhere else. If you go, I hope you have Susan as your tour guide because she was wonderful! There are a few things there that actually belonged to Patrick Henry -- think of how long ago it was that he and his family lived... More

We were prompted to visit after hearing a dialogue in Williamsburg between Henry and George Washington--excellent actors BTW--and we had not visited Scotchtown in 15 years. A museum room has been added to one side, full of interesting things. Also we toured the cellar where Henry's poor wife was kept after she went crazy. Lots of surprises here, some fine... More

My husband and I were doing our Back Roads Roadtrip and stumbled upon Scotchtown! It was listed on my large Rand McNally map, but didn't show up on my GPS. We found it by just driving down Scotchtown Road we found on the map! What a gem! We were surprised at the size of the home as well as the... More

Scotchtown, Beaverdam, VA (Home of Patrick Henry) Is a step back into history. The homestead looks much as it did when Patrick Henry lived there. There is a cell phone walking tour of the property, which is open March thru November.

The day we visited it was pouring rain. There was a surprised look on the guides face when we knocked on the door. She said we were brave to come out on such a terrible day. I didn't have the heart to tell her we were passing rain or no rain. We had a very informative tour of a typical... More

I was surprised by how much I didn't know about Patrick Henry besides his famous speech. Our tour guide was delightful and obviously, loved his subject. Absolutely worth going.

Excellent tour! So glad we made the drive from Richmond (which was not difficult). Excellent tour of the house and grounds. What made this tour different is that it really focused on who Patrick Henry was as a family man and a private man out of the public eye. According to our tour guide, Henry was the most popular man... More

Very well preserved home of Patrick Henry, where he was living when he said "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!" The house has an unusual shape for a colonial home, but it's authentic. Lots of Henry Memorabilia. The cellar where Henry's wife was kept and attended to after losing her sanity is on the tour, kind of scary but... More
