Overview
More
The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection is the largest collection of Indigenous Australian art outside Australia, and comprises over 1800 objects and paintings created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from different regions of Australia. Visiting the Kluge-Ruhe is a terrific opportunity to learn about a different culture, view a film of artists creating and discussing their art, and see the gorgeous views of Charlottesville from this museum on a hill. An exhibition of works from the permanent collection is changed annually, while special exhibitions in the rotating gallery change every four months. Special events include lectures and performances by visiting artists, scholars, and musicians, film screenings, and educational programs for all ages. A free guided tour of the current exhibitions is offered each Saturday at 10:30 am.

The aboriginal Australian art is displayed in small doses in a series of rooms, including suggestions for children's exploration as well as general explanatory placards. There is also an area for creating and sharing your own original art.

This private museum houses only aboriginal art, making it a unique experience. If you are unfamiliar with this genre, you will be awestruck by the colors and patterns. If in Charlottesville, it is well worth a visit.

Culturally diverse and interesting. A worthwhile endeavor. Full of surprises and way out of the norm. You need to see this place.

To find this amazing collection of Australian Aboriginal art in the middle of Charlottesville, Virginia, was a real delight. Regular artists in residence add a contemporary touch to what is a profound historic collection, particularly of desert and top end artwork. Definitely worth an hour...More

This place is located on Pantops just before you get on the interstate, its tucked away in the hills next to Martha Jefferson hospital. It has some great aboriginal art and they have great art openings with snacks and drinks.

The museum was built from private collections, and has some good items, though it is quite small; but a pleasure all the same.
